Weird Rash

I discovered a weird rash on my son's belly last night. It looks like sun burn, and feels warmer than his other skin when you touch it. It starts at about where his diaper ends and stretches up approx 2- 2 1/2 inches and stops just below his chest. It is not on his back or sides. It doesn't appear to bother him, but I am baffled. He had it once before, and I gave him a bath, put some lotion on him and by morning it was gone. Not this time, he still has it this morning. Nothing about his diet has changed. My laundry supplies are the same as always, and he hasn't worn any "new" clothes lately. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It ended up fading a way early the next day. Just seems so strange for it to come and go. He hasn't had shots in a very long time, no has he played outside lately because of the weather, It probably is sensitive skin. He often wets through his diaper and soaks his pajama's at night, perhaps that is the culprit.

Thanks everyone, for all the responses

Hello. I would highly suggest you call or go see your pediatrician. There is an illness that has a rash on the tummy. I can not remember what it is. I think it might be baby measles or something like that. I know my mom asked me if my son had a rash on his tummy as well as his little butt. I hope everything is okay with your little guy.

Glad to hear he's looking better. Here is a website that I just found the other day. Very handy to keep in your "favorites" file or print it out like I did just for reference...

Kids get rashes all the time and it's usually no big deal. But there are some rashes that start on the "trunk" or belly of your child that develop into more severe rashes after a few days. Watch it for another day and if it doesn't get better or if more symptoms pop up I'd get him in to see the doctor by Monday, I'd also watch him for a fever. It's probably just some normal childhood rash~

Try hydrocortizone cream. It should help the inflammation (rash). Do you think he could have come in contact with anything similar to poison ivy? Any plant like that has oil that spread and saturate clothing, bedding, towels, etc. If that is possible, try washing every thing, plus him. Also check for fever and for spreading. Give that a couple days and if that doesn't help, take him to the doc. Good luck...hope you figure it out.

Since it's recurring it sounds like it could possibly be something like excema. Hydrocortisone cream will work. Personally, I'd take him to the doctor now. If he's scratching at it, it will only make it worse and could possibly get infected. Plus, it will probably come back again sooner or later. I'd want to know what it was, what I could do to prevent it, and how to treat it when it flares up.

My daughter had the same thing a couple of weeks ago, so I took her to the doctor and she said it was probably just extremely sensitive skin, there wasn't anything to do other than keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get worse. Hope that helps...

If you think it may be the wetting through the diapers, you might want to consider buying those Huggies overnight diapers, for nighttime use only. They are quite absorbant, and our son never soaked through with those. It's also a good practice to run a wipe over his whole diaper area when you do a morning change.

Have you started putting up holiday decorations yet? Maybe he brushed against pine needles. I put lights on a pine tree out side 3 days ago and still have a slight rash on my arms. It's doesn't bother me but it's pink like a sun burn would be.

Ok, this may sound strange but it sounds like a problem I had with my daughter when I started potty training her. She was getting a rash around her waistband at night which was the only time I still had her in any kind of diaper. I took her to see Dr Patenaus (our wonderful ped) and she said it was because of lack of air. Certain diapers in our case the pull ups are not as good at wisking away moisture and letting the air in as others and she got a rash becasue her night time pee was staying to clise to her skin. Because you have a boy and you said it is only in front maybe it is becasue of pee as well. Have you changed diaper brands lately?

Sometimes this dry winter air can bring on abnormal skin. When my son was 1 1/2 yrs old he had a similar rash and I was sure it was excema. I did the cortison cream and everything. Sometimes he still gets it in the winter, he is now 4. If it continues, limit baths to every other day and use only slightly warm water. Use a good lotion right after bath time too.

Hi C.,
My kids all have sensitive skin along with their dad, winter time does bring out the excezma, but I assume your son probably wears jeans and it could be an allergy to nickel its usually used in zippers and the button even if he's wearing a t-shirt, I just put bag balm on his belly, that stuff works on any kind of rash! good luck

Did he get any vaccinations lately? Sometimes they get a rash like that for a few days after?
