Hi all,
I am looking to volunteer in/connect with local small non-profits - I am curious what are your favorites and why. What kinds of support could I offer? What kind of fund raisers do they have.
Thanks
D.

I love an organization called New Life Beginnings in Long Beach. They support homeless women and children. They are christian based and have awesome programs to help these women become self-sufficient. There are many opportunities to volunteer as they do not receive government assistance and rely mostly on volunteers and donations. You could work in their thrift store, read books to/do crafts with the children, and so much more. Check out their website to learn more...http://newlifebeginnings.wordpress.com/. They are amazing!

There is actually a group in Long Beach for the purpose of volunteers--called GLBDoV--Greater Long Beach Directors of Volunteers. I am a member of that group as I head up a project called Quilts of Valor. We make quilts to give to our returning wounded heroes from Iraq and Afghanistan. We meet most Thursdays from 1-5 at SewVac on Clark in Long Beach from 1-5 pm. We also do full days of sewing at an American Legion or a quilt store on a weekend. This Sat (Flag Day) we will be at the Norwalk American Legion 9-5 or Leahs Fabric Gallery in Orange 10-4.
The members of GLBDoV do an event in Oct called Volunteer Village, where all the groups who can use volunteers (of any age) can have a booth and the public can come and see about 60 different organizations that can use volunteers.
In Long Beach, the high school students are required to do 40 hours of community service in order to graduate, and many do 200 or more to get recognition. This event is a place where the students and the general public can find places to spend their time giving back to the community. Hope to hear from you, B. Winkler ###-###-####

I am responding to the second part of your statement. working from home. I am retired with two grandchildren and one on the way. I live with my mother who had a stroke and is now much better. I have been submitting appliations left and right, no takers. I would like to work from home if possible to be available for my mother's appointments. I was a Office Assistant III for 16 years. My daughter who is expecting in November is trying to find some work to do at home so she can stay home with her three children. Any advice or information for us to make this happen would be greatly appreciated.

We work with Meals on Wheels (in La Mirada, but all cities have their own). We pick up meals from a hospital and take them to shut ins or people who are unable to cook for any reason. The recipients pay a nominal fee for the meals; we of course work for free and our gas is tax deductible. We work when we can, 1-2 days a week or less if we have other plans, there are no "have to" limits. Call your city hall for the Meals on Wheels phone number for Long Beach. My husband and I both volunteer but not necessarily together; it depends on our schedules and the MoW's needs. People are so grateful for the food, delivered hot/warm right to their door. We are a ray of sunshine in their lives, some love a little chat.

Hi D.
My church, Long Beach Covenant Presbyterian, has a non profit education center which provides after school programs for the inner city youth. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities there. Talk to Adele LAngworthy ;)

The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, although not that small, is local. You can be a docent among other things. They have after hours events to help raise money where you can also donate your time. They also host camps for kids and birthday parties.

I belong to the Friends of the Lakewood Libraries (FOLL). It's important to donate time (and money when possible) to further a cause you believe in.

One of my purposes is to show possibilities in life and I find that many people discover their inner truth through reading and writing. Therefore, this organization is close to my heart.

Take Care,
F.
