What Do You Think About It?

This is a strange but good question I would like to ask all the Mothers here. I know that we are living in the computer and technology age. I like computers just as much as the next person. My question is "Do we really want our young children on the computer? Now, let me explain. When we are on the computer, we see all the abbreviations for words and now kids are typing words that are misspelled. This has really concerned me. If we let our young kids abbreviate and misspell words on the computer, why even let our kids go to school and get a proper education to learn to spell? I know that the older kids understand these things, but what about the younger kids. Are our kids going to grow up thinking its okay to abbreviate words and misspell them through life? I know sometimes when I read things on the computer, I sometimes think I need to go to school just to know what the abbreviations and misspelled words are. Am I the only Mother who thinks like this?

What can I do next?

I agree with what you are saying, but it's not just affecting the younger kids. Older kids and even adults have gotten so used to writing this way that they do it without even realizing it. I can hardly stand to read the way that they write.
I mean, rlly, OMG its like they prolly dont evn care tht they rite like this! LOL

I agree C., but it isn't only the young kids. My teenager uses incorrect english at times. To be honest with you, I do sometimes just by not thinking before I speak and my spelling has really dropped off since the invention of spellcheck. I am currently in college with a 4.0 and have to think how to spell some simple words when spelling was always one of my strong points. My personal opinion is that technology has challenged some things like english and spelling, but the educational benefit for the age appropriate uses are far more beneficial. I try to be aware of correct english and spelling, and I ask my children to do the same. So really it is left up to the parents to teach the right, and monitor these things. +

Good point that you have!

Personally, I think alot of that problem is with the parents who don't properly monitor their kids on the computer and what their doing. If your child is to young to understand that abbrev. on the computer is not the correct way of spelling then they either shouldn't be on a computer or they should not be allowed in chats. My husband has owned computers since he was my sons age and he is extremely intelligent when it comes to anything relating to computers.(Lets just say my son's aren't going to have it easy if they plan on doing things their not supposed to on the cpu, because dad will catch them)And we do not alow my son on a computer. Not because if the abbrev. but because he is just simply to young and he has plenty of time to grow before I'm ready for his better judgement to be tested on the internet.Unless you see your children writing on their school work like they do the computer then other than it being an annoyance, it shouldnt be to bad. It's a part of the change of new technology.

its called text speak or chat speak, and heres a simple answer, teach them the right way and they wont use it. I play an online game and it Drives me INSANE, when I see abbreviated words in chat. I play with people of all ages from many differant countries and yes some of them use abbreviations but, when I see it in chat I will usually ask what it is and force them to write it out all the way. In short if you monitor what your kids are doing on the computer and get them games and let them use websites that encourage education including math ,spelling, reading etc. you should have a problem with it. My daughter has been using a computer for since she was 3 and we only allow her to use sites that we approve everything else is blocked.

Our kids are not on the computer at this time. When they are older we will add typing and computer stuff in general into our homeschool curriculum but not at this time. There are A LOT of reasons why our kids are not on the computer and you spoke of one of them =-) good job bringing up a good point!
