there's always sphagetti sauce or bruchetta, but I seem to remember my BIL using stewed tomatos and it was really good. Anyone done this?

We use tomato paste with a little italian seasoning on top and top it with sliced tomatoes. The tomatoes make is more like a sauce and sweeter tasting.

it depends upon my mood and how much time I have on my hands...

I typically use Barilla sauce...but I have been known to make my own with fresh diced tomatoes and a few pureed....it's work...gotta get it "just right"...

I make my own.

- For red sauce: Pomi strained tomatoes & pasta herbs. Put a few tablespoons of water in a sautee pan, add your herbs, cook on high for a few minutes to really get the flavor from the herbs, add strained tomatoes, cook for a few minutes, stir in a couple table spoons of olive oil. I have several tins of mixed herbs from italy (friends and family there make it a great option, it's about 3 euro for a pound, as opposed to $20 per ounce at a grocery store in the states... HINT... to buy herbs, go to an Indian Spice store)... but a little parsley, oregano, basil, etc will do you up as well. ((Biggest difference between pizza and pasta sacue is that pizza sauce doesn't have garlic in it))

- Olive oil base (that simple)

- Pesto... jarred or homemade pesto mixed half and half with olive oil

- BBQ ... half pizza sauce, half bbq sauce

Pasta sauce is just as easy, but I prefer chopped tomatoes for pasta sauce. You can really play. A little red wine and ground beef for bolognese... some white wine, basil, and garlic for a perky marinara... some garlic, parsley, red pepper flakes for puttanesca...

In our area boxed chopped tomatoes (or strained, crushed, whole) is a gazillion times cheaper than fresh tomatoes. I prefer fresh tomatoes... but at $3-$4 per pound, it's just much more cost effective to use Pomi.

Crushed tomatoes work very well also! Put in some grilled onions, black olives, garlic, oregano, parsley, basil, spinach if you like it, green onions if you like it, italian seasonings...

Yep.Although I add olive oil and a little bit of cane sugar to it. Sundried tomatoes with a little olive oil is good too. I use basically anything with tomatoes in it.

A can of crushed tomatoes with some italian seasoning. I've been adding fresh oregano from the garden.

Or my favorite is using very little canned crushed tomatoe, sliced tomatoes and basil from the garden.

I take 2-3 tomatoes. Add salt, italian seasoning, a bunch of basil leaves and some fresh garlic and puree it in a food processor and spread it over the pizza crust. Works well and is healthy.

In all honesty, I usually keep some Ragu Pizza Quick sauce on hand for that. I sprinkle a little italian seasoning over the "pie" after spreading the sauce. My kids also use it to spread over a tortilla or hot dog bun to make pepperoni sandwiches, too. :)

I sometimes use my home made sauce...if I have extra on hand...but frankly...when we do 'home made' pizza here (and it has been a while due to the heat...and NOT wanting to crank the oven that high)...truth be told...I use canned...sometimes sauce...sometimes just crushed tomatoes ...

BUT...we have GOOD cheese...and so many choices of toppings...it hardly matters...

For US...the 'crust' is the 'thing'...LOL
