What Is the One Chore You Hate Doing Most Around the House?

As a mom to quite a large family I have a lot of chores around the house that I willingly do without much fuss. I don't mind vacuuming and dusting. I don't like mopping the floors - so only do it when I really have to. I find ironing quite relaxing and theraputic. Loading and unloading dishwasher doesn't really bother me.

The one thing I really hate is laundry - putting it in the washing machine and the dryer I don't mind, but it is the sorting and folding and distributing it to the rightful owner I just can't stand! Sorting socks is the one thing I would love to pay someone to do in my house. During the week we must wear atleast 84 socks between us all. During the school year my boys all have to wear black socks. That is 40 black socks a week that are all different sizes and different shades of blackness after so many washings. I can only sort black socks on a really sunny day to make sure they get their right match and also have to put them in piles of varying lengths, then I have to distribute them to the right owner. Can anyone out there suggest a way I could end this torment?

What's your worst chore? And do you have a tip for a household chore we could all use?

What can I do next?

Label 4 garment bags (with fishnet and zippers) with your sons names and give it to them. Ask them to daily put their dirty socks in their bag. Toss the bags in the washer and dryer and you will have less sorting to do later. Or you could give the garment bag full of clean socks back to your boys and ask them to do their own sorting in their rooms. To further this, buy 8 pairs of garment bags. At any given time, 4 of them will have clean socks yet to be paired and the other 4 will have dirty socks. Two bags for each boy, with just their names on them.

Have the boys pin the socks together with safety pins when they take them off. The pairs stay together in the wash and are already sorted when they are taken out of the dryer.
Your boys seem old enough to have some chores...let them do the sorting. Hope this helps!

Good news!! Your boys are old enough to help with laundry :o) My suggestion is get 4 separate mesh zip-up laundry bags (they're normally used for lingerie), mark each one's name on them. Have the boys put their dirty socks in their "sock bag". When you wash clothes the socks will already be separated by child. All you'd have to do is teach the boys how to match their socks.

S.,

I feel your pain I have 7 in my house and laundry is the one thing I hate the most. I don't mind the loading and unloading its the folding and putting away I hate. Here is my trick it works well for me. Everyone has their own laundry basket and there own Laundry Day!! My oldest gets Monday and so on. I only wash their clothes on their day period!!! That helps with trying to figure out whos socks are whos and what not. Yes this mean I do at least 2 loads of laundry everyday but I like it better then spending a whole day just doing laundry. The other draw back to my system is that everyone has to have at least 7 pairs of jeans, socks, and what not and you have to keep on top of trashing and replacing wornout clothes or someone is going out naked.

Hi S.,

Years ago, my Mom made several pair of lace socks for myself and sister. She would stitch a small bead just below the lace where it could not be seen when being worn. She would then match the socks by the bead to know what two went together and who they belonged to. You might be able to color code the different socks to be able to match them easier. Good luck!

The one chore I HATE is unloading the dishwasher. I don't mind doing the loading.
