Our neighbors have a tree, that is dropping fruit in our yard. Our dog appears to be eating it, and she doesn't seem to feel really well. We can't figure out what kind of tree it is! The fruit, although clearly not ripe, looks like a date. The tree looks NOTHING like a date tree, though. The tree itself, looks more like a pear type of tree. I know it's not, but it has a similar type of shape and leaf. It is a pitted fruit, currently with a brownish skin, and light green inside. My dog doesn't seem really sick, just a bit lethargic. She is eating, drinking, and her stools are normal. I'd like to know, if the fruit is making her act kind of funny. I have scoured the internet and can't find anything!!! Does anyone have any idea, what kind of tree and fruit this is?

We just noticed the fruit today and have cleared the yard of all of them, so she can't get anymore! My husband will go outside and pick all of them up, each time we let them out to be safe.

I did ask my neighbor and they've never known. I grew up with ton of pear trees (we have them in our own yard) It's definitely not a pear tree. Also, the skin of the fruit is probably more of a reddish color with a little brown.
THANKS everyone, for your help!! I think we are going to take the fruit and some leaves to a local nursery. We *think,* it could be a jujube, because it looks the most like the pictures we've seen. Thanks so much!!
It is most definetly a Red Date which I have eaten and love it you can tell by it seed which is similar to the Brown Date.
My guess is jujube as well. The fruit is actually kind of good. My friend has several trees and she's always looking for someone to take bags of it.
It's a fig tree! It's time for figs. Dogs also LOVE them. They aren't poisonous to dogs like grapes can be, but just like with people, if they eat too many of them, they'll get a tummy ache and diarrhea! My parents used to have a dog that devoured the figs from their tree every year and always had a stomach problem for several days surrounding that time.
It may be a quince tree. I would not let your dog eat the fruit. The seed may contain a natural poison and your dog does not know not to eat the whole thing. Fruit is not a good thing for dogs to consume in general. Their stomachs are not made for that kind of digestion.

It could be the bartlett pear or even a peach tree...both of ours dropped fruit early this year and none of it was ripe...take a piece of the branch to home depot or lowes, they might be able to help you...
Pistache or pistachio maybe?
Any chance it is a Jujube? It will grow in your area and some varieties definitely match what you are describing. I can't find a reference in my resources listing it as possibly toxic, but those lists are not ever complete nor do you know how you animal will react.
Aside from the lethargy, it sounds like she is ok. Vomiting and diarrhea are major signs of poison in a dog.

Is it possibly a fig tree? Maybe you could take one of the fruits to a local nursery and see if they know what kind of fruit it is. Also, maybe call a local vet once you know what kind of fruit it is and see if the way your dog is acting, is linked to the fruit, OR bring one of the fruits to your vet and ask them. I cant see why they would charge you for just asking a question, so i would probably try that first.

I believe it might be a Loquat Tree. My parents have one. The fruit is really pretty tasty.
Could it be an Italian plum? It sounds a lot like a tree we had in our last yard...
I remember reading somewhere that fruit pits are poisonous to dogs. I would definitely take your dog to the vet along with the fruit to show the vet. I would also trim back the neighbor's tree so that it stops dropping fruit in your yard.
Brownish skin, greenish inside, fruiting late summer in N Texas - sounds like a pear. I've seen coyotes eating pears, it's not too much of a stretch for a dog. Have you asked your neighbor what kind of tree it is?
