What Marriage & Parenting Books Do You Recommend?

In responding to requests here, many people recommend good books to try. I thought it would be nice to have one thread where everyone could list some of their best book recommendations. (I'm talking about marriage/family/parenting books, not fiction/romance, etc.) Then we would have one thread we could refer back to when looking for a good book to read or help with a particular situation. What do you think?

I'll start with a few of my favorites (and probably add more later as I think of them).

1. Parenting with Love and Logic, by Jim Fay and Foster Cline. They also have a book geared specifically for birth to age 6, which was wonderful for me when my kids were smaller.

2. Scream Free Parenting, by Hal Runkel.

3. The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman. Great marriage book, and they also have one about kids.

4. Love and Respect, by Emerson Eggerichs. This is one of the BEST (if not THE best) marriage books I've read.

I look forward to discovering some other good books as many of you respond.

I would recommend "The Optimistic Child"... this is a good book to help children have a better outlook on life. It has exercises in it to help children see situations more clearly, so they're not making negative assumptions when it comes to other people's motives. It's about social situations in day to day life.

Take care.

I personally never read any parenting book or any on marriage. The marriage thing I have down pat. Be honest, loyal, respecting and loving and the rest fits into place. As far as parenting. I certainly don't knock those, I could use a little more patience but I dont seem to gain as much gratification from books on parenting as I would going to a parenting class as me and my husband have discussed to help with gaining more patience. Not to mention I'd have to give up sleep to have enough peace and quiet to read a book lol and sleep seems to give me more patience than a book. But to each his/her own is what I always say.

I agree about the Love and Respect book. Really eye opening. Made me understand my hubby much better.

Also good: His Needs, Her Needs by Willard F. Harley, Jr. We read this together early in our marriage and it helped us get off on the right foot. I think he also has a version for parents.

Kind Regards,

NONE! Throw the parenting books away! They are the reason that we have so many unruly, ill-mannered, annoying little brats running around. Good parenting requires love, patience, strength, CONSISTANCY - mean what you say, prayer and DISCIPLINE --- which, yes, includes spankings!

My husband & I LOVE the "Baby411" and "Toddler411" books by Denise Fields and Dr. Ari Brown. They are great for first time parents! I think we saved ourselves a lot of heartache and trips to the doctor by reading these books!
