I am looking to buy a dental insurance for our family. I never had one before so I am not sure where to look. Can anybody give me some ideas what to look at when buying one? Also if you are happy with the one you have please let me know.

Thank you!

I agree with checking with your dentist BEFORE purchasing a plan to see what they accept. I personally have Guardian and cannot stand it! I switched from Aetna, (due to losing my job), and cannot believe the huge difference in coverages. Aetna was fantastic! Covered 80% & also braces. Guardian has a 12 mos. waiting period for anything other then cleanings, and even after that, they do not cover much. My dentist fortunately takes both, but I had to resort to getting "Care Credit" to cover most of my out-of-pocket expenses. Check out whichever company you go with thoroughly!

I would look into Delta Dental...they are very comprehensive. Otherwise there is always Blue Cross that has a dental plan.

M., I have worked with someone who sells insurance products including dental for several years now. I'd be glad to give you his name (he works for MetLife but sells other products) if you would like it. I think it best to work with an agent than to explore on your own. Good luck.

Call your dentist & find out which ones they accept. I made the mistake making a choice on a company only to find out when I went to my dentist a couple of months later they didn't accept that company.

Two things to think about when looking at dental insurance (I am an agent) is what is the network and "are their any waiting periods" Usually, dental plans that are owned by an individual has 6 to 18 month waiting periods for anything over preventative cleanings.
I recommend either The Guardian paln (no waiting period for any service) or the plan with World. World allows you to go to any Dentist and the guardian has both in network and out of network benefits (this is the one that I personally have) with 80% benefits.

I hope that this helps. If you have any question, feel - free to give me a call = ###-###-####. S. H

because so many dentists take so many dirfferent insurance I found that I found the dentist I liked adn then called them and found out what they took for insurance and then asked them which one paid the best/covered the most and was hastle free. Dental insurance can be a little tricky.

We have had Cigna and Metlife in the past. We currently have Metlife. One thing I do not like about them is that anything over $200 has to be approved in advance. That is fine if the approval is quick, but we have had it take 2 months for approval. That's a long time to wait with hurting teeth. I am not sure if the dentist dropped the ball on submitting the form, but I was not impressed with the turn-around.
