So I took both my daughters to the doc on Tuesday, they called in my 5 yr old some medicine encase I really needed it since they did hear one wheeze but said to hold off since they JUST got off medicine last week. She ended up with a fever and real sick by Thursday, got the medicine filled and now she is on some...Now my 2 yr old was also seen, doc said her lungs and all were clear and seemed she was getting over whatever it was. Now Saturday night her cough is still real nasty, she has no fever, seems to be acting fine, maybe a little more tired than usual...however I do think she seems to be wheezing. How big of a deal is this? I know wheezing is bad for children and people with Asmtha....will she be ok till I can get her in to the doc on Monday or is this hospital visit worthy? She seems fine except wheezing and the cough.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the concerns everyone. I pretty much knew it wasn't something to mess around with. Guess I just needed to be scared a little more so I didn't feel to paranoid. I ended up taking her to th ER the next morning. They gave her some medicine there and a breathing treatment. Said she had acute bronchitis. Sent me home with a breathing machine, some medicine and a cough syrup. Took her to her reg. doc yesterday to update her and because she is still wheezing. She said to keep her on the medicine and see how she is in a few days. Said it sounds like the wheezing is coming more from her throat and not her lungs, whatever that means. she said to watch her chest to help tell if she is havering trouble breathing. So she seems to be breathing ok and still running around playing fine. If she ain't better once done with the medicine in a few days than I will be back. Thanks again everyone!!!!

Its a NOW thing.

Sorry.

But the brain only has 6 minutes without oxygen... And on low oxygen, every time her blood oxygen levels drop, she's already losing brain cells. So even if her lungs don't shut down overnight, she's risking brain damage.

If she's wheezing, take her to the ER.

I would call the on-call doctor....

Before you call, time her respiration rate.... how many times she breathes in one minute. That information can be VERY helpful to the doctor or nurse line.

We've dealt with asthma a lot with my grandson.... he wasn't responding to his albuterol inhaler, and took him in to the ER...... even after observation and a nebulizer treatment, (on top of frequent inhaler use during the day), we ended up taking him back a SECOND time that evening.....

That was one really jazzed up kid by the time it was all over..... but fortunately, the second trip to the ER did the trick, and his asthma eased up.

Wheezing, you call the doctor NOW or go to the ER, you don't even wait until morning, let alone Monday, sorry. Wheezing and cough in my 3.5 y/o equaled asthma for the first time :( I had two cousins who died from asthma attacks, so I know the risks.

Call your pediatrician; get their message service or talk to your pediatric advice nurse. I would hate to give you advice on this as I am not a medical professional and don't know you or your kiddos or how bad the wheezing is.

Don't wait-- do call them now. Most peds have an emergency number and will either answer urgent concerns or call back quickly.

And yes, it can be a big deal.

Wheezing and cough in a 2 year old warrant at least a call to the pediatrician and more likely immediate evaluation. I would NOT wait until Monday.

You need to call the emergency number. A cough can go from bad to worse quickly.

Wheezing is made when a person breaths and the airway has inflamation. fill up a balloon and let the air out it makes a little noise thats a regular breath now fill up the same balloon and only open the airway a little it makes a different noise. Thats wheezing. It means something is going on. Go to the doctor sooner not later. She could be asthmatic. My daughter does NOT wheeze she coughs and it is her asthma acting up. Go to the doc but also request an eval by a pediatric asthma specialist ASAP.

I was sick once, it lingered, I had no fever, coughing, mucus, I went to the Doctor and I had Pneumonia.

Take your child to the ER.

Being fine except with wheezing and coughing... is not, fine.
