When to Worry About Fever?

For a two year old, at what fever temperature should you go to the doctor? He has no other symptoms, other than a bit more lethargic. Children's Tylenol does bring it down quickly, but it goes back up at the end of the day, just before bedtime. I just now took his temp rectally and it was 103.2. My cousin who was a pediatric nurse had told me in the past that she didn't get real worried or go to the doctor unless her kids had a temp of 105.

What can I do next?

I don't think that it would hurt to go ahead and call the pedi, I am sure they have an after hours service. But if I were you I would alternate Ibuprofen and Tylenol, one every three hours until the fever was gone. Both of them I think are every six hour doses, but it is perfectly fine to rotate between the two of them giving her one every three hours. This is usually what my pedi has me do to break a fever.

I would either call your pedi or take him to the ER. I'm a panic-er...I call my pedi when my kids temps are 101....Keep fluids down him as well... Hope he feels better soon!

Fever is the body fighting off something and isn't necessarily a bad thing. As far as the doc.....depends on how long the fever has gone on and other symptoms. Is your child rubbing his ear? Ear infections can sometimes take time to present themselves. If it has been more than 3 days I would call the pediatricians office and go over the symptoms with a nurse. If it is a week I would make an appointment to see the doctor.

Also, if you child has a rash along with the fever then I would go in immediately. This could mean strept throat. A rash anywhere on the body.

Keep the baby hydrated. Don't panic, but be smart......my motto...... best to err on the safe side.

I'd go to the Dr. for this kind of fever if:
1. Tylenol or Motrin doesn't budge it.
2. Kiddo isn't eating/drinking well.
3. If I'm not seeing a good pee diaper every 6 hours.
4. If it's gone on for more than 3 days.

Fevers seem to go higher at night for some reason. Except for the age, this almost sounds like roseola, it's a 3 day fever around 103 with no other obvious symptoms and on day 3 the fever breaks and the kiddo gets a rash on the chest/back which means it's pretty much over with. Rash goes away in about 2 days...this seems to hit most kids around 18 months tho.
