Will a Tubal Affect My Ability to Breastfeed

Hello Everyone!
I scheduled my tubal ligation today, after 5 boys altogether and the fact that the oldest has had a son which makes me a stepgranmda at 29, we are done having children.
I am blessed with all my boys, but feel in order to give them the quality of life we want to, we needn't have anymore!!
My question is about breastfeeding. I am an avid breastfeeder and am wondering if any hormone changes in my body after my tubal might affect my supply?
I read the post the other day about whether you can nurse right after or not due to anesthesia and pain meds, and I will consult my doctor and follow his guidance as far as that goes..
Just hoping that nothing that occurs in the process of the tubal will affect my milk. I still plan to nurse for quite awhile yet...
Thanks for any input you may have!!!!
Wish me luck, my surgery is 2/13, Happy Valentine's Day to us =)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for easing my fears/doubts. You moms are wonderful with your caring words, bits of advice and overall compassion. Just knowing this will be the last I get to nurse, I guess makes me a little sad. But I am excited to "get my body back and back in shape eventually".
Thanks again for all your help!!!!!

I guess it does but it depends on how much you usually produce. I had so much milk with my first I leaked all over and I was nicknamed Elsie because of it. I also had my tubes tied minutes after the birth of my youngest son and while I also breast feed him and I had enough to satisfy him. I did not leak ever so I guess it did lower my ability to produce. I even pumped at the begining to try to increase producion and for times when he needed a bottle and I was out. Good luck.

NOPE! Cutting the tubes won't affect hormones, only taking out the ovaries does that.
And OMG you have a grandchild at 29?! lol

I had a tubal ligation and I am still nursing after 10 months. It was very painful in my tummy & back area and hard to nurse but I did it. I wish you the best!

I had a tubal soon after having my daughter. I also breastfed her. I remember being told to pump some milk in advance so she could have that while I was having the procedure done and after. I then had to pump around two times following the procedure and throw that milk away. After the two pumpings and so many hours, I was able to nurse her again.

I had no hormonal problems afterwards and my milk supply was not affected.

Best to you!
K.

From what I understand about a tubal, there aren't any hormonal changes. It's just cutting and tying of the tubes. Your ovaries are still producing eggs, they just don't have anywhere to go. So as long as you find out how the anesthesia will affect your breastfeeding routine (as in will you need to pump a supply ahead of time and then wait a day or two to nurse to let the drugs out of your system) I don't see how the surgery itself will cause any problems! And kudos to you for choosing to breastfeed!! Good luck with your surgery!

Hi C.,

I just had my son on Sept. 5, 2008 and had a tubal immediately after he was born. I had a planned c-section, so while my OB had me opened up, he took care of that as well. A tubal doesn't affect hormones at all; your body will still ovulate every month, but the egg cannot get to your uterus through your tubes. I opted to breastfeed my son and had no problems at all. I'm still nursing and he's almost 5 months old. I occasionally supplement with formula, but not because I have problems with my milk supply. Sometimes it's more convenient if I have to go somewhere and have my daughter babysit, she's almost 17 and I have no kids between the two of them.

Good luck with your surgery, you'll be fine!

I had a tubal after my last baby was born. I had a c-section & they did it then. It in no way affected my milk supply or my daughter's ability to breast feed. I had nursed my three older kids & there was no difference in nursing her. In fact, we just weaned about 3 weeks ago. She's 19 months old.

Good luck to you!

I also had a tubal when our daughter was 5 weeks old. Aside from the meds, which they DID NOT tell me, I asked on my way out the door, I coulnt nurse for several hours, 5 I think. But milk was never an issue. Just wanted to give you one reassurance:-). I will warn you however, from my experience, they told me I could go to work the next day, not that I was back to work yet, but I was uncomfortable for a good week. Not painful, just a bruised feeling. Good Luck, congrats on the newest addition, and the Grandson, I an 40 andcant wait to be a Gramma. Ours our 21, 18, 6, and would be 3( my Angel in Heaven). God Bless, A.

I had a tubal ligation after my second, and went on to breastfeed immediately afterwards, and never had any issues with it.

I am getting the essure procedure done instead of the tubal but my doctor assured me that both procedures would not affect your milk supply.
Good Luck!
