I loathe smoking. I have told my children since they were babies its bad for your body. Why in this day and age with so much information about smoking do people still smoke. Yesterday I got on a elevator and a woman asked me to hold the elevator. I told her she could have. She her husband just put out his cigarette. I would of gotten in the elevator and stunk. Her husband said in a very nice way. Not nasty. Does it smell. I said YES. I normally don't say anything to people. I was not crass but I did say something they obviously did not agree with.

What can I do next?

Hmmm, while you are busy detesting smokers, fat people, FB, the holidays, tattooed people, other people's children, etc., I am busy looking for the beauty and humor and good all around me every day and finding it just as easily as you find the bad.

I choose to enjoy life, you should give it a try! Still, if you don't, that's cool, no judgement from me!

Holy rapid fire questions, Batman!

So, you don't like smokers, Facebook, or obese people, but you love Disney.

Here's the good news--you can choose NOT to smoke, stay thin and go to Disney as often as you like!!! Yippppeeee!

Wow. I'm a non-smoker, and I really dislike the smell of it, especially when it's in clothes, etc. I cannot ever imagine being rude enough to say something like that to anyone -- friend or stranger. I detest rudeness far more than I detest smoking.

who is going to say they approve of smoking? seriously?
i smoked for years. loved it. i'm still kinda surprised i was finally able to quit.
but guess what. it's still legal (barely), and while there are rude smokers, this fellow wasn't one of them.
i'd find his smoker's stink far less offensive than your nasty attitude.

I hate it and am an ex-smoker. I will say that I loved it SO much when I did it. Non smokers have no idea of how good it feels and what an instant stress reliever it is. But let me tellyou what I also hate-people rude enough to call someone out so blatantly on it. Your move in the elelvator was completely classless and you should be ashamed of yourself.

So you were on the elevator when a woman asked you to hold it...you saw that they were smokers and got off and then told them they stunk? You find it acceptable to be rude like that to strangers? Maybe you should stay home in your glass house.

I try hard to not be judgmental of people, and if people want to smoke in the privacy of their own homes so be it. But when people are in public and smoking, the smell gags me. It is really frustrating when smokers congregate in front of an entrance where I have no choice but to walk through their haze of smoke. It is really, really rude so I am rude back. I make a loud inhalation just before I reach them, hold my breath and a deep exhale just after passing. I also flash dirty looks.

I don't judge obese people because they don't have an effect on my environment. They aren't polluting the air around me.

Smoking is unhealthy and it stinks, that's all true. My brother smokes, but I adore him and if he fouls up my airspace with his smoky smelling clothes, it's a price I'm willing to pay to spend time with him.

Do you know that people have an *inside* to them as well as an outside? People aren't just skinny or fat, smoker or non, tattooed or plain skin. People are also funny, creative, happy, hurting, giving, intelligent, sweet, shy, outgoing, serious, thoughtful, etc.

I can't stand the smell, and tobacco has killed people I love. I've gotten on empty elevators that stink after a smoker got off. But why are you posting this here? And there are thousands of things we know can hurt us, but we still choose to eat that bacon and date that jerk. I absolutely hate smoking and am very glad that our area has outlawed smoking in most public places, but I'd be foolish to think everyone will make the same choices I have or have the same sensitivities I do. People start all kinds of bad habits to feel better about themselves, despite knowing it's wrong. It's called being human.

For someone who doesnt want to PUT TOO MUCH OUT THERE... on social media sites. Somehow I know enough about you to spread some good gossip to well, NO ONE. Sheesh, I am glad you detest smoking. However being rude about it, does NOTHING to help bring awareness to the problem. He obviously doesnt give two hoots what you think.

I hate it and I am an ex-smoker. All the years I smoked I had no idea how bad I must have smelled all the time. I'm glad the laws here have seriously restricted where people can smoke now. Parents who smoked at soccer games, playgrounds and the zoo really irked me.

Yes, I personally hate it. I HATE going in a store and having no choice but to walk through a cloud of smoke to get in the door. I DO move away from people that are smoking. I hate that it is an addiction. I have a friend that is always financially challenged. She is ALWAYS scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to have just enough money to pay her bills. HOWEVER, I have never seen her without a pack of cigarettes.

I don't typically say anything to anyone, but in your case, he asked you directly and you answered him truthfully. My opinion is don't ask a question if you are not ready to hear the answer.

Well I hate smoking too. But I think people have the right to do it if they want to. I especially hate it when I see employees smoking outside of a business, and you have to walk through their smoke to get to where you are going. That is what aggravates me. I think there should be designated smoking areas, not outside the front door. I don't think you were wrong though to voice your opinion.

Hate it.. And unfortunately here at Disney World...they allow smoking on the property...I was shocked....yes in designated spaces... But we are not used to being around so many smokers...

Where we live it is pretty rare, except in some nightclubs to experience smokers...we are even about to ban them in public spaces like nightclubs and parks....

I also detest smoking. It would be a relationship deal breaker for me (friendship too - I just can't stand the smell). I tell my children that they would severely limited their dating and friendship pool if they ever decided to pick up smoking.

I'm not a smoker, but my mom has smoked all my life and her mother died of lung cancer and that didn't cause her to even try to stop. The smell actually triggers migraines for me so I avoid being in a smokers home for long periods of time. It seems this addiction is a very difficult one to break. I dont allow smoking in my home, but to each his own.

When it effects you I do think a person can say something if they cannot make a change where it won't effect you.

For instance, if you are around a smoker you can choose to get off the elevator and take another one.

If a person near you is smoking you can choose to move to another place all the time.

If you are in someone's home where they smoke, well, you went there to see them so suck it up.

My blister on my back during allergy testing was from tobacco. I had to have an eppi shot before they'd let me drive home. Now that was a trip. Driving home shaking and heart pounding, beating out of my chest.

That blister was almost 5 inches across. It puffed up immediately when they brushed to allergen on my roughed up skin. It burned and itched.

One of the ladies leaders in my old church gave me 3 people on my visiting list that smoked. When I went a few times and came out having to do a breathing treatment I told her I couldn't visit them anymore she told me in a sarcastic way "Well, everyone's allergic to cigarette smoke" and that I had been assigned to visit them. So needless to say they didn't get visited and I asked to be released from ever having to go visit anyone again and I no longer attend that church.

So you have a choice. In this instance, you could tell he was smoking or that he had just put out a cigarette. You could have pushed the button for the next floor, got off, then turned around and pushed the button to ride the elevator the next time.

You could have just rode in silence, you said something and I don't think it was wrong if you were asked.

I don't like smoking either. Which is why I don't smoke, and I don't go places where smoking is allowed.

In Spetember, I stood with my husband as we watched his mother take her last, gasping breath. She died of emphysema from smoking for most of her life. My SIL's, all three of them, went out to smoke less than 20 minutes after she passed.

I don't claim to even remotely understand. But what I do know is that nicotine is a powerful addiction and it's NOT my place to judge them. Nor is it yours.

I hate it, hubby is an ex smoker , he hates it , he doesn't know how he stood it for as long as he did. I dated a smoker it was like kissing an ash trey.
I can smell it a mile away.
My best friend smokes and I've been on her for a while to quit, she keeps saying she will but still hasn't.

Many smokers have the attitude that what they do does not effect others well that's wrong it does, it clouds the air , makes it hard for others to breath, kills people that don't even smoke, and stinks. Would you smokers want to get in an elevator with a sweaty person with a body odor problem? Not likely , it's the same for us non smokers. The smell sticks to your clothes, fingers , hair and skin. And when I've been around smokers I end up smelling like it. I once received a package of something that I got on ebay. well it obviously had been in a smoker's home it reeked of smoke I couldn't even leave it in the house I had to take it to the garage and just leave it there , couldn't bring it in to throw it in the washer it was so bad , so all that money I spent getting that item and couldn't even use it. My kids have asthma , they get around someone smoking their lungs close up.

Many , not all, smokers are thoughtless and selfish. Just for a drug that makes them feel good. They make everyone one else miserable.

ETA: I guess no one read the part where the man ASKED her if it smelled.

Sometimes it's just too hard to bite your tongue. He asked. You answered. I'm with you. Smoking is just stupid. And it is my business to the extent it raises the cost of health care in this country. Typically it's not the high earners/taxpayers who smoke too... Every time I see a smoker I think "gonna have to pay your healthcare someday..."

Can't stand it. I am highly allergic and so it is unfortunately all around me when I go out----so I have to constantly take my meds so I can breath. I wish that it was outlawed and banned all together. There is not one positive thing about smoking.

I understand how hard it is to quit and have supported loved ones who have tried. But it is a nasty habit to start!

I do understand why older people smoke. Even though I would think it would be extremely obvious that smoking was bad for you, it really wasn't publicized until the 80's. By then many people were addicted. I remember when I was pregnant, my MIL had an old baby book. It recommend that you smoke a cigarette immediately before breast feeding because it would help to relax you. But with all the current data, I don't understand why young people even start.

Not only to I despise cigarette smoking, I'm extremely allergic. In the situation you descibed if they got into the elevator with me, I would have had a reaction and probably vomited.

I hate the fact that I can't drive with the windows down in nice weather because if I come to a stop light and someone in the car next to me or in front of me is smoking I can get very sick and cause an accident. Yes, I'm serious I have severe reactions.

As one mom mentioned, it not my business. Yes it is my business if you smoke in public because the second hand smoke is affecting my quality of life.

I despise it too. I say, if some people "enjoy" smoking, it's their lives, but they shouldn't impose others to breathe their poison. I am sorry, but it is what it is not healthy at all. I don't think you were rude, the guy asked you and you just answer honestly (I assume you just say that:"yes").
