Another question resulted in some surprised reactions when yearbooks for elementary school were mentioned.
Our school has elementary yearbooks.
My son loves them!
Does your school have them?

ETA: Ours are hard covered year books (much like my high school year books) and have pix of all classes of all grades in the school.
They price ranges from $25-$40 I think, and even now offer the smart phone scanner thingy for more photos.

What can I do next?

When I was in elementary, there were yearbooks, but they were just black and white and paperback, so not very expensive. I think that a $40 yearbook for elementary is a little bit much. We did not have hardback yearbooks until highschool.

My school has them but I only ordered O. for my oldest when he was graduating from 4th grade. They do a special hard cover for the 4th graders. I don't really think a year book at every grade is necessary.

Yes, my kids' school has them, and no, we don't waste our money on them.

We buy school pictures and a class photo each year. That's plenty to remember each school year.

I have not bought O. yet, my daughter is in 4th grade. I buy the class pictures, and that's enough. If she wants O. in 5th grade before she heads to middle school, I'll buy O.. I don't even know how much they cost, I haven't even checked.

Several of my daughter's teachers have made an end-of-year DVD with pictures of all the events throughout the year, and given a copy to each family for free.

I think I got O. my junior and senior year, and I've never looked at them since.

Our school doesn't have a school wide yearbook but a couple of the teachers have put together classroom versions that are pretty neat. 2 yrs ago my oldest son came home with a CD. He said his teacher had given it to him. We watched it and it was really cool. She had put all the pictures of their class on it from the activities that they had done throughout the year....Halloween party, field trips and other things. Then set it to music. We still have to watch it occasionally. Other teachers have done an autograph book type thing with O. class picture and things to record who their best friends were, their favorite thing to do this year kinds of things.

Haha - my picture question :). I do get my kids yearboosk and always will. Maybe because I grew up in the military and that was the best way to look back at things. I love having them. My daughter's kindgergarten and first grade ones are digital - dislike because they can't sign those! But starting last year they went back to regular books. They were $10 each - not bad!

In the 5 years that I taught elementary, O. school had them, O. did not. In the school that did not, we made a 'classroom' yearbook out of paper and yarn and each kid wrote and decorated a page. I photocopied them and they collated them.

With all the moving we did with the military and all the different schools my kids have gone to I can say that some schools do offer elementary year books. It's becoming more popular. I've not heard of big hard cover ones though. Some schools, depending on who they go through, can earn a profit for eachh O. sold. Other schools just think they're neat and cute. I don't buy them in elementary school when they're offered. I sometimes uy them in middle school. I try to get them every year for high school when I can.

My O. son is in 10th grade so it's class ring time. Holy cow the local company here wants a minimum of about $300 to start. Ridiculous. So we went to Walmart and they have the same thing for $100. But looking through the brochure I see they offer class for middle schoolers now! how ridiculous is that? Those kids are going to grow and then buy another ring in high school? It's all about making more money and getting parents to believe it's a necessity, especially when O. by O. parents are getting sucked into buying all this stuff.

I miss the days when rings and graduation and all that stuff isn't done until high school. I don't agree with graduations for preschool, kindergarten, middle school. Programs, yes. Graduations, no. Diplomas, no. cap and gowns, no. Only high schoolers deserve it after 13 years of education. College grads deserve it since it's a hard road that not everyone can do.

Don't feel guilty or obligated to buy anything. Just like school pictures. I'm taking my teen son to Walmart to get pics. Cheaper and I can choose the pose. I felt I had to buy the triplets photos through the school for outrageous amounts just so I could get them each a class photo. They're in different classes and don't offer class photos unless you buy a package.

Yes, our school has them also & I find it a colossal waste of money & annoying as well. I mean, as an adult I pretty much never look at my high school yearbooks, & I certainly never would bother to go through a middle or especially elementary school yearbook for crying out loud. I end up spending a fortune on school pictures, class pictures, sports pictures, band pictures, cheerleading pictures, & gymnastics pictures throughout the year but now I should ALSO buy a yearbook for both kids?? No way, man!

**ETA**This year if we pre-order for the middle school the yearbook will be $35 & $40 if we do not so it would end up being another $80 between both kids. I'm thinking next year when Mike is in 8th grade I *might* get O. for him as he'll be going to a technical high school after that most likely.

I buy yearbooks for each of my kids each year. They love them and spend countless hours throughout the years looking back on old yearbooks. They are full of fun memories and little notes from friends. Maybe this is an unnecessary excess...but in my kids' world it brings such happiness and good memories. I am willing to splurge an extra 60 bucks total each year for that.

I love looking back at my old grade school yearbooks too!

Good luck and best wishes!

The elementary yearbooks were soft cover and $12 - $15. Maybe because it was a small school.

Yes, our daughters schools all had them and we purchased all of them. She looked through them for a long time.. Her Senior year in high school, they were great for the "Senior Night" Graduation Lock in..

The kids howled at all of their kinder - 5th grade pictures..

The yearbooks included the photos from the field trips their special studies, the school carnivals.. The Track and field day.. etc..
Of course all of the staff and teachers.

I would only order them if you kids really want them and ours did..

My grade school had year books, but I think I loved them so much because we had a very small school, so the yearbooks were very relevant to us--meaning, pretty much everyone was in it several times. It was also a great place to record messages to O. another at the end of the year. I wish my parents could find it in their house so I could have it. I LOVE my high school yearbooks, and most of the kids I went to high school with also went to my grade school.

We've had them since daughter was in K and she is now in 11th grade.

Of course I buy them, they are a part of her school traditions and she loves them.

Elementary level was about $30. I think I paid about for the last 2 yrs of high school (9-10 grades) and I am sure the price will go up this year for the Sr. High which is grades (11-12). The Seniors have options to put their own page in it if they want,,, more $ involved of course.

From day O. ours are hard cover, good quality.

I think they are great as well, I had them growing up and i would not cheat my child out of them because some company is out to make money on the schools. People are out to make money everywhere you go so Yes, we participate with yearbooks.

Our school has them in hardcover for $20.00. I get them for my kids every year. Along with class pictures it also has candid shots of the kids from throughout the year. My daughter keeps her yearbooks in her bedroom and looks at them often. :)

Yep they have them No I will not buy them until they get to 5th grade and they are moving schools.
It's just another way to pay out money to these companies that prey on schools.

Our school does them in a soft cover. I think the cost was $10 last year and my kids love them. I have to admit that I would take pause if they were in the $25-40 range though.

I got a yearbook every year I was in school from Kinder up through high school. And as an elementary school teacher, every school I have taught at has a yearbook.

The ones I got in elementary school and middle school were very small and simple. Class pictures, a few pictures of events throughout the year, and staff pictures. That was it. My HS yearbooks were much bigger and more involved; much more like what many people probably think of when picturing a yearbook.

Our elementary school has year books. They are soft-cover and the kids love them for a little while....they aren't something that is not brought out daily...

Our year book is $19 per copy. The art work is done by the kids. There are a lot of class and field trip pictures.

I would prefer to wait until middle school. But ahhhh....I don't mind.

I have all my yearbooks - from K-12 - I still love reading the inscriptions when I come across them. I hope my daughter's school offers them - I will definitely get them. In my 5th grade year book, there is a picture of my husband in 6th grade - before we even met.
