I have a 5 wk old newborn who I am breatsfeeding, but we have had so many problems. I found out about 10 days ago that I have a yeast infection in both breasts due to some antibiotics I Had to take. This yeast has caused extreme pain while nursing, to the point I can't nurse with out a nipple shield. I am boiling everything that touches my breasts or my daughters mouth, I am using monostat 7 on my nipples after each feed, I am taking 100mg of Diflucan a day, and I am treating my daughter with Nystatin. It has improved, but I was told it could clear up in 48 hrs, which it hasn't. I am so frustrated with the whole experince. I REALLY want to breatsfeed my daughter, but it has not been fun so far. I have seen 2 lacation consultants who reccomended all of the treatments I am using and I have talked to my OB about it. No one seems to have any more info or advice. Any suggestions, advice, or encouragement???

What can I do next?

Hello S.,

First, congratulations on the birth of your daughter!
I have a couple of ideas in regards to the yeast. I just want to recommend that you cut/eliminate as much as you can sugars and simple carbs from your diet. eat more yogurt and also take probiotics. when your body is very acidic, yeast thrives. change to a mild shampoo, & body soap...that could be irritating your niples. I wonder if it will help to 'air out' your chest. and make sure you're using a cotton bra.
Good luck and hang in there! ~C.~

you got excellent advice already concerning the gentian violet. Any Sprouts or Whole foods market will have it. Also, wash your breasts with vinegar in the shower. It helps to neutralize the ph of your skin. Washing your bras in it will help as well. Make sure to let your breasts dry before putting them away after a feeding.

Ditto the gentian violet - it's the only thing that worked for me and my son. You both need to be treated. It is bright purple and will stain things, so make sure you both wear old clothes until the color is gone. We only need two treatments each. You'll definitely need to call around to find a pharmacy that has it - it's usually kept behind the counter because of the staining - it will stain your carpet - my son drooled on ours and that spot is still there 13 years later!

Also are you taking probiotics? Often when you have it externally, you also have internal fungal issues.

I had to use something called Gentian Violet to clear mine up. It is a more natural approach...much cheaper and works better and faster. Just one problem...it stains everything bright purple! I had a purple baby, hands, and nipples for about a week. It is worth it though...I had relief from the pain within the day. It is kind of hard to find, I had to call several pharmacies to find one that had ONE bottle in stock (they keep it behind the counter so you have to ask for it). I hope this helps...feel free to email me if you need more ____@____.com
