Yeast Overgrowth During Pregnancy?

Hello All - I am 32 weeks pregnant and have suddenly developed what I believe to be yeast overgrowth (very difficult to get an OB to confirm this for some reason.) At the start of my 3rd trimester I had a yeast infection, was prescribed Terazol, and it went away. About a month later, it came back. Terazol again, failed. Diflucan, failed. My OB has done a pelvic exam and says it is not BV. I have simultaneously developed and itchy rash under my breasts, and after doing my own research, am concerned that I have an overgrowth of yeast. I am not a diabetic, nor HIV positive (both conditions that come up alongside yeast overgrowth. Oddly enough, I also have been taking a probiotic throughout my pregnancy, as well as eating yogurt. Though I probably shouldn't, I read too much and have come across numerous articles relating yeast overgrowth during pregnancy to autism and other disorders in children. I'm quite concerned. Has anyone experienced this? Suggestions? Guidance? Peace of mind?

If your OB said you don't have BV, she is saying that you don't have a bacterial infection. That's kind of the opposite of a yeast infection - not enough bacterial will help yeast grow. Yeast and bacteria keep each other in balance. If your OB said you don't have BV, I would think she also checked to make sure you didn't have too much yeast.

Taking probiotics and eating yogurt are ways to make sure you have enough bacteria in your system so that you don't have too much yeast. So it doesn't make sense that eating yogurt would cause yeast overgrowth.

I think you need to ask your OB more questions. And show her that rash. You are confusing bacteria and fungus (yeast). They are two different things that should be kept in balance. Not enough of one is going to cause too much of the other, thus causing an infection.

Talk to your doctor and ask questions until you understand.

Ugh - I feel for you!

Yes, pregnancy hormones can change the balance and make yeast growth increase. Same with antibiotics.

If you're using powder for the rash, stop. Sweat can increase yeast growth but be careful what you use to absorb it.

I agree with topical application of yogurt.

And see your PCP if your gyno isn't listening. Or get another opinion at a women's clinic.

Don't read so much about autism! They don't know what causes it, but vaccines and yeast aren't on the list (or shouldn't be). There's some preliminary research on father's DNA but it's early yet, and it's absolutely not due to your yeast! The internet (or Dr. Google, as some people call it), isn't always your friend!

for the itchy rash under your breasts, try cream for athletes foot. it worked wonders for me! (but check with the dr first, i was not pregnant nor breastfeeding when i use it,)
can you consult with another ob? if you are concerned and your ob is not then check with different ob.
they have not difinitively found the cause of autism. some say this some say that some say vaccinations. but in reality no one has a clue about it. i would stop googling and try to not worry. talk your fears over with your ob and if they do not saiisfy your need for answers check with a different one.

I read a lot about diet and yeast overgrowth at one point (struggled with thrush while breastfeeding one of mine). I don't know how much of it is science and how much is old wives tales, but cutting back on refined sugars and carbs might help - and eating healthier is never a bad idea, right? For example, that yogurt you eat daily - is it flavored with added sugar? Could you switch to plain yogurt and then add a little fruit or a touch of honey? Do you snack on carbs? If so, could you trade out those crackers for a handful of cashews?

Eating yogurt is all good and well - but have you tried applying it directly?
Try bathing in it.
Add a cup of plain yogurt to your bath water.
Your skin will love it!

Itchy rash under breasts could just be sweat related.
Try using an antiperspirant there.
Apply, let it dry (use a blow drier if you have to) and then get dressed.

Besides yogurt baths, you can add a little colloidal oatmeal to your bath too.
It's very good for soothing just about any itch and your skin will love that too.
