I had a dog eat an entire 1 pound bag! The only thing that happened were his little deposits were glittery for a couple of days.
HI Moms,
Our dog jumped up and grabbed a Hershey's kiss from our dining room table about 10 minutes ago. He looked so guilty, I couldn't figure out what was going on. Then we discovered the chocolate was gone. That's all he got, so I think he'll be ok, right? He weighs about 28 pounds. Thanks!
Thanks, ladies! Floyd seems to be totally fine, so I'm sure all is well. Good to know about milk vs. dark chocolate, too. I appreciate the quick responses :) P.S. I'm laughing at these responses! And here I'm asking about one kiss, lol

my dog got a hold of chocolate too. The vet told me that it would have made her sick right away if she was going to get sick. She also likes to hide food she gets in different places. She is a cockerspaniel and 12 years old.
What Riley said :-) LOL.
I have a dachsund mutt that is 9 years old now. She has been a goat from day one, and has eaten things you would not believe and never gotten sick. One Easter, this pig stole my daughter's huge chocolate easter bunny right out of her basket while the whole family was having easter dinner. She ate the entire thing. She also ate a 3 lb cheese log - she is only a 25 lb dog!!
Anyways I took her to the vet bc I was very worried about the chocolate, but she was fine....
He'll be okay - that is not enough milk chocolate for a dog that size to be affected. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a lot like caffeine and which dogs are much more sensitive to. Milk chocolate contains the smallest concentration of theobromine, dark chocolate has more, and baking chocolate a whole LOT more. Signs of chocolate toxicity include hyperactivity, elevated heart rate and possible seizures. Less than that can just be GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea). So it depends on the type of chocolate, the amount, and the size of the dog. A 28 lb dog that eats one Hershey's kiss will be fine. If you have a ER vet practice in the area, you can always call them and they can do the calculations and figure out if it's a problem or not - when I've been working and on ER, we get those phone calls all the time! We've also had people freaking out because their dog ate a brownie, an Oreo cookie, etc. because they contain chocolate, but it's not enough chocolate to do anything - maybe they will get some vomiting and diarrhea, but if I ate a whole pan of brownies at once (like a roommate's dog did once), I would get sick too.
Funny story...had a client who brought his dog in for shots and a check-up and mentioned that the dog recently had started acting hyper at night, pacing and panting and not settling down. There really wasn't any reason for it that we could figure, until he mentioned giving the dog a fun-size Milky Way DARK candy bar for a treat at bedtime - EVERY NIGHT. Ummm, HELLO! You might want to stop doing that! I could not help but wonder, what would make someone decide to start doing that in the first place?
And no, it is not cumulative over time - whatever chocolate your dog eats is metabolized within 24 to 48 hours and that's that.
ETA: @Riley J. - Thanks for mentioning the cocoa bean mulch - I had actually forgotten about that, and it's true. Nice job! :)
Only one?
One of my daschunds are a bowl full back around Christmas.
I called the emergency animal clinic, I looked online, and everything said that the caffiene in chocolate can speed up their system and cause a heart attack.
My son and I were about to haul him up to the emergency animal clinic and pay a fortune to have him treated, when I decided to stop, breathe, and check on him.
Yep, he was calmly sleeping, and snoring away with his belly full of chocolate. In fact he was sooo calm, I decided to wake him up. LOL
So, one hersey kiss - yeah, not epic. He is fine and now has chocolate breath. LOL
My little 8lb. Yorkie has eaten more than that. Milk chocolate won't hurt them as bad as dark chocolate and it just shouldn't be a common occurance. Not to worry...
No biggie.
My husky ate an ENTIRE BAG of Hersheys kisses once!
She threw up but was OK.
As I understand it, it's kind of a lifetime cumulative bad thing. :)
Milk chocolate isn't safe, but it's really dark chocolate that's extremely dangerous. He would have to eat A LOT more then one kiss!

My dog at a whole dish of 'em, wrappers and all. That was before anyone knew chocolate was bad for dogs. He was fine.
My daughter once won a 5 lb Hershey bar at a New Year's Lock-in.....
One of our dogs got hold of it and ate probably a third of it........
She was just fine.
Yep, your dog will be fine!
My 40 lb dog ate 2.5 lbs of Fannie May chocolates from under a Christmas tree a few years back. She threw them up all over the place, and we had to use charcoal suspension but she was ok.
The vet said that bakers chocolate and dark chocolate are what you'd need to worry about.
I just have to say I LOVE the name Floyd for a dog! Makes me smile just thinking about what he looks like!!
Sounds like he's gonna be okay! Good.
If he only ate ONE hershey kiss i am pretty sure he will be ok. :) if you are worried call your local animal emergency clinic and they will be able to tell you for sure. i once had a 130lb doggy that ate my entire box of valentines chocolate. i called the vet...and the amount of ounces of chocolate compared to his weight, they said he would be ok.
hehehe...my first thought was "lucky dog"....
he'll be okay. it's not "good" for us either. as long as it doesn't happen again....he'll be fine.
I am a first time doggie owner, so i dont know. Our puppy got a hold of a hot chocolate packet. I panicked and a friend reassured me that it would be ok. That was 2 weeks ago and he is fine :)
I am so glad that everyone responded. I still do not know what is harmful in amounts of chocolate. I think i over panic. This is good to know. I was one of those moms who told the kids not to drop ANY brownie or chocolate cake crumbs. Your post will help me relax a little :)
One Hershey's kiss (milk chocolate) is no big deal. Dark chocolate is a problem. My 6 1/2-year-old Springer Spaniel grabbed a bag of Dove's dark chocolate out of my son's bedroom in the middle of the night. When confronted in the morning ("Max what did you?" do while showing him the empty bag), he had a heart attack and died. Previously, he had grabbed two giant milk chocolate Hershey bars and downed them with no problem. He was 45 pounds. The vet said the dark chocolate has strong stimulants in it. When dogs get a taste, they crave it although it is bad for them. We were heart broken to lose Max.
its 10% of the dogs body weight when it becomes toxic to them. I had a 70# eat 2 boxes of thin mints and a hot pepper sub and she was fine did not even get an upset tummy. your pooch is fine just move the kisses.
Reminds me of the time that my little sister and I cried about our dog eating a couple tootsie rolls....lol
He'll be fine. There isn't enough cocoa in that (being milk chocolate and only ONE kiss) to hurt him. We used to give my boss's GSD/Wolf mix M&M's at the office. She loved them! (Only a few at a time and not every day)
I swear she knew how to count, because if you only gave her 2, she KNEW you OWED her another one!
One won't hurt him, thankfully. My grandkids had a Teacup Terrier who got into a bag of loose Hershey full size bars and ate them all, she nearly died from kidney failure and her kidneys were bad after that. About 4 months ago she began having seizures due to the kidney problems and died in early December. Just be careful about leaving chocolate where your dog can get it. Glad he is fine : )
Hi..
My sister's dog got into the Easter chocolates one year and ate an entire bag of chocolate eggs.. foil and all! She was very concerned and worried. However, other than foil-decorated poop, the dog was fine. I've never heard of any animal (personally) that has had ill-effects or died from eating chocolate. I think your dog will be just fine. :)
yeah he should be fine
My aunt's dog loved chocolate about as much as her. She would have a chocolate bar and give the dog just the teeniest amount when she thought no one was looking. We always told her that it was bad for the dog, but she felt so guilty cause her little coco loved chocolate so much. Now the dog has passed away from old age and my aunt can't have chocolate for health reasons (Well, a chocolate every now and then is okay but not as much as she used to eat).
My mom's dog LOVES twizzlers. You have to shove a bone down that dogs throat if you want her to eat it, but hold up a twizzlers and you might just get your hand bitten in the process of her snatching it away. Lol
Wash it down with some fab...bottled water?? He'll be ok-but , yes, scary! Kiss his little nose for me, please!
Yes, he should be fine. Unfortunately, our dog got a hold of a whole dark chocolate bar one Christmas. That required an emergency visit to the vet.
