We did that for my son, but split it up and gave him 1-2 oz with the medicine, then gave him the rest of his bottle after he finished so we knew he got it all. His reflux improved a lot after he was switched to Prevacid solutabs.

Becareful putting it in the bottle with the formula. That method worked great with my first born, however, my second born wanted nothing to do with it. He refused to take a bottle for 1/2 after that...it was horrible. I think I tramatised him! I would try either a medacine pacifier and just put a little formula with meds, or just meds in it and then wash it down with a bottle. Or I just used a meds dropper and put it in my sons mouth and pointed it towards the back cheeks and squirted a little and let him cry, then did a little more. He eventually got used to it. We also switched him to soy formula and that seems to help with the reflux a little more too. Both of my kids had cereal in their bottles too, that also helped with the reflux. Once they hit the jar food, they were a lot better with the reflux and they didn't have to take the meds as much. Good luck with it!
Walgreens offered several times to flavor it for my daughter. She never had a problem taking it so we never did but I know she said they have many flavors to make it easier for them to take. I am sure other places will do it as well.
If you fill your prescription at a Meijer Pharmacy, they can re-flavor it for you. It's still not great, but that may work........
My first son was on Zantac for reflux and would spit it back out EVERYTIME. We finally switched his formula to Nutramigen by Enfamil. The reflux was gone! It is a little bit more pricey than the 'regular' formulas, but well worth it, in my opinion. WIC does cover it, with a prescription from the doctor. I would try switching formulas, instead of medicating my newborn.
Here is what I did with my daughter, I had the pharmacy flavor it, the only one they could do for Zantac was grape, she was on 1 ml twice a day. They gave me an insulin syringe minus the needle and I would give her 1-2 tenths on a ml and give her her binky, then wait about 20-30 seconds and do it again. It was not long before she loved that nasty stuff. I would check with my dr or pharmacist before mixing it with the formula, there may be a chemical reaction, or make it less effective. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions.
My daughter had to take zantac, too. We would put it in the nipple part of the bottle and put a little bit of formula with it. That way she could suck it on her own but it wouldn't be in with all the other formula. It was the easiest for us. It was gone in two or three sucks. Then she could have the rest of the bottle to wash it down. Good luck.
Hi Sahm,
I don't know about the formula, but try to give it to her with a little syringe in the back of her month. She should be able to get at least 90% (if not all of it) down her throat. My son took medications for 4 years and started at a month old.
Hope this helps and good luck....don't be afraid to call your doctors office and ask the nurse for help. My doctor's offices, that I have found, have heard of every thing and have some very good suggestions to help you out.
Best of luck and keep on trying.....I know it is hard, but it will get better....just takes time...

My son was on Zantac when he was a baby too. He hated the taste at first, but eventually grew to love it.I tried mixing it in his milk at first, but found that it just made the whole bottle taste bad and he still wouldn't take it. I'd try one of the pacifier-type medicine spoons. Hopefully your daughter will learn to like the taste soon.
So sorry to hear about your son's death. My heart breaks for your loss!
Here's a tip my Ped gave me and it works like a charm!
Make a bottle as usual (formula). Take the ring/nipple off the bottle you always use with her. Measure out your dosage. Put a little formula in the nipple (hold finger over nipple so nothing comes out) and then shoot in the medication - keep it detached from the bottle. Then give it to her. I would always just put my girls in their bouncer to do it. Then in the other hand keep the syringe and if some of it is coming back around the ring area(as it probably will with the sucking motion), just suck it up w/syringe and put it slowly back into the nipple as she is sucking it down! Then screw back on the top and give her the rest of her formula. Works like a charm, I promise! I even have a nipple that i made the hole bigger, which I keep separate for antibiotics since they are thicker. Let me know if it works, or if I didn't explain well enough :)
Sorry to hear of your profound loss. While our 3 month old daughter has bad acid reflux and i was putting the zantac in the formula for the same reason, we're stopping:
1) Zantac is under review.
2) Gas drops are doing a great job mitigating the colic like irritation.
-Max,
Hello - my daughter used to take the liquid kind as well and it DOES taste truly awful. The pharmacist told us that they can only use the grape flavoring for some reason (other flavors aren't allowed with this medicine) but the grape did help mask some of the nasty flavor. Check with your pharmacist about flavoring it.

We did.... I had a medicine 'spoon' that was a pacifier that we would put the meds in with a bit of formula - or just the med after a while. We found that if she could suck it out on her own, she would take it as opposed to us trying to squirt it in.

I can't imagine what it is like for a child to go home to heaven at such a young age. My prayers and thoughts go out to you.
If you would like to use something for her that is natural and helps with acid reflux as well as building her immune system, it is called Optiflora (good bacteria). It comes in a (small) pearl size shape and many moms will put it in the bottle and babys naturally swallow it. There isn't a taste to it.
If you would like to know more, email me.

yes as long as she drinks the whole thing it will be good to go. most kids nor babies like the taste. one other way which most don't like is you can aim the dabber towards the back of the throat and force her to swallow it. or disguise it by flavoring it with different things till you get one she likes. Apple juice, grape juice, chocolate, fruit punch juice.
Hello! My now 7 month old daughter took Zantac for a bit before switching to Prilosec. You can have your pharmacist flavor it for your baby girl and she should take it much better. If that doesn't help, our script said it could be taken with or without food, so I would assume mixing it with formula would be just fine! Hope that helps!
You can mix it in with her formula. Best of luck to you I sympathize all 3 of my kids had reflux and were on multiple meds but it does get better the older they get and once they are on solid food. Take care.
