I am newly pregnant and feel ill 24/7. My doctor prescribed me the generic zofran, but I did some research and dont know how safe it really is. Anyone have any experience with this, or do you have a natural way to ease the sickness?

What can I do next?

I tried everything Christine D mentioned and more and NOTHING worked but the Zofran. I was actually on IV therapy for a month because I could not take in any fluid or food without throwing up (2nd pregnancy). The Zofran (name brand not generic) was actually injected into the IV. I was only on it for a month and then things got better, but without it I was not functional and I had a three year old to take care of. My son is now almost 4 and he is amazing!

I used Zofran (brand, not generic, as I am not sure it was available as a generic back then) with my 2nd pregnancy. It didn't "cure" the nausea, but it got me to the point that I was FUNCTIONAL. To me, it was a Godsend. I only wish I had known enough to ask for it with my first pregnancy. I guess my nausea wasn't quite bad enough the first go-round for my doctor to suggest it. It was very expensive and I was functional for my first (miserable, but functional, barely)... but the 2nd time was worse, and I had a 2 1/2 yr old little boy running around that I had to be functional to keep the house from getting burnt down.

I would use it again in a heartbeat, if I were pregnant and sick like I was with my first 2.

ETA: As for safety? Well, my daughter is now 11 and she is a straight A student and does lots of extracurriculars. She is in no known way at any disadvantage physically or mentally. In fact, she is smarter than the average bear... ;)

I was sick for 12-16 weeks with my pregnancies, rarely vomiting, but just ILL! Blah. So sorry for you. In my first pregnancy, I struggled through it. But with my second one, I needed to care for a 3 year old and could barely get out of bed, so I used medication - I think Zofram (very expensive chemo drug??). But I rarely took it, only when I really needed it, several times per week, because I was worried about safety. It took the edge off. Nothing else worked for me. Soda and small meals made me feel momentarily better, like literally 3 minutes. Sleeping was heaven. Sea sickness bracelets? Fail. Ginger anything? Yuck. I do wish I had tried acupuncture which I heard is really effective. But I was too tired to find an acupuncturist.

I used generic Zofran (ondansetron) during my second pregnancy. Without it, I was throwing up 7 or 8 times a day, from about 5 or 6 weeks along until the day I delivered, so for me it was a lifesaver.

I discussed it with my OB and a friend who is a pharmacist and was satisfied with the safety of the drug.

I lived on zofran for my entire 2nd & 3rd pregnancies - it was a godsend!!! My Dad was a pediatrician and I spoke to him and my OB in detail (I was a HIGH HIGH Risk pregnancies) and they agreed it was the best thing possible :)

Just to add we have a standing script at our pharmacy for it for each of us b/c it is a godsend when the stomach crud starts going around

I suffered through MS with my first child until around 5 months. Now with my 2nd I could hardly get out of bed or off the bathroom floor - constant gagging and vomiting. My doctor started with other options first - B6, ginger, then on to Maxalon and then when none of that worked on to generic Zofran. There is a big difference between mild morning sickness and hyperemesis. I wanted to scream when people told me to try eating dry crackers before I got out of bed!! It is a life saver for me, there's no way I could function to work full time and look after a 4 year old feeling like that.

One word of warning - it can cause constipation and did for me very badly. I have to take a stool softener and drink 8 glasses of water a day. Sorry for TMI but I wish I had known how important it was to do that even before showing constipation symptoms!

I had hypermeisis for all of my pregnancies for the whole 9months. I lost weight and had to have lots of meds to keep anything down. Zofran was a lifesaver for me because it helped me stay out of the hospital. I highly recommend it. It is a very safe drug and I didn't have any weird side effects. If you need it, take it. Vitamin b6 helped me as well. GL

I have heard that you can try vit B, Dramamine and/or ginger. I drank a lot of ginger ale. Vernor's to be precise. But my morning sickness was not severe.

I was sick my ENTIRE pregnancy. Severely sick.I tried every natural remedy on earth. I was put on Zofran at about 8 weeks. It did not take the nausea away, but it allowed me to keep stuff down. I was hardly able to drink water, without it coming up. I took Zofran until the day my son was born. I literally could not eat or drink, when I tried not taking it.

My son is very bright and wonderful. He has been mildly sick once in his 3 years. There were no bad side effects for me. I try to avoid medications when possible (Hence, trying every natural first) and I would not hesitate to use Zofran again.

I was on Zofran (not the generic brand) for 6 months during my last pregnancy. If I hadn't used Zofran, the pregnancy would have been unbearable. Like one of the previous posters mentioned, it didn't cure the morning sickness, but it made it easier to manage. I didn't suffer any effects from using Zofran and neither did my son. Along with the Zofran, I ate melons, drank seltzer water, and ate small meals including protein. Doing all those things made the pregnancy less nauseating.

I hope you feel better....soon!:)

unless you're vomiting to the point of losing weight or the nausea is interfering with your daily activities to the point that it's a problem, i wouldn't take anything. that said, if it IS a problem, as it was for me(i lost 30lbs and only weighed 115 to start with!), i wouldn't hesitate to take it, you have to look at not only the risks, but the benefits as well. back when i took it during my first pregnancy, it was $40 PER PILL, 3 a day, and my insurance threw a FIT about it - we had to jump through all kinds of hoops to get it approved, and i actually ended up in the ICU for a month and darn near died from malnutrition + a horrid MRSE infection in my PICC line(another way they were trying to get calories in me). with my history, my OB/MFM was VERY quick to get anti-nausea meds into me during my subsequent pregnancies, i tend to spiral out of control once it starts... i will warn you of two things - zofran is notorious for causing headaches and severe consipation. try to make sure you are walking regularly if you can(this aids bowel movements) and take colace(it's OTC) with EACH DOSE OF ZOFRAN - this is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO important. colace is just a stool softener, NOT a laxative, it isn't absorbed into your bloodstream, just acts in the "gut" when it is swallowed, so no risks to baby. my husband is a pharmacist and i can assure you he would have balked at anything that he felt was unsafe. good luck!

Back in the 'old days' when I had my kids you mainly just had to deal with it. I think maybe they had something but not much. I had nothing and the first was so bad, had vomiting and nearly passed out a few times, etc. The others were just sick feeling and usually not throwing up but wishing I could. Some were worse than others and with one something 'helped' but not with the next pregnancy. I lived so you have that choice of just being sick and making it. I would lay on the floor by the baby in the crib or the toddler playing in the room and hope I could fix the next meal. We made it. I have one daughter who has very sensitive stomach and she couldn't stop throwing up when pregnant and she did take the Zofran and her child is fine now. I guess it's a decision you have to make keeping your comfort and ability to cope in mind.

Don't take it -- Please!

This will pass, you won't be sick forever and even if you're sick for nine months, it is only nine months. You don't know what this drug will cause why take chances with your child's life/health. And so many drugs don't really show their side effect till years later. Why take anything while pregers when you don't absolutely have to. That's my take.

You could take ginger root, chamomile tea, crackers, soda, small meals, lots of water, B- complex and 6. You may to stay away from certain foods for a while. It just depends what works for you.
