My 21 month old son has had a scabby rash behind one knee for over 6 months. The doctor thought it was yeast and at one time gave us prescription yeast cream for it, but it did not go away. We have since tried EVERYTHING to get rid of it including neosporin, gold bond powder, resinol, etc. It occasionally gets better for a few days but then it always gets worse again, it never completely goes away. In the past two days he has also developed small pimple-like red bumps with dark tiny little head on them all over his legs. Overnight they spread to his arms and cheeks. What could these two things be and how can we get rid of them??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Went to the Pediatrician today and she said that she had no idea what the rash was, that it is very strange because he is not feverish and the rash is not on his back or stomach. Definitely not hand foot & mouth disease either because his throat and feet were fine. Her only guess was that it may be some kind of allergic reaction. She prescribed an anitbiotic because the sore behind his knee is looking really sticky and infected and we are also putting a prescription antibiotic cream on it and wrapping it with gauze to keep it clean and try to get it to heal. We are going to a dermatologist on Thursday, hopefully they can come up with more answers for us than this. Logan has had sensitive skin issues including eczema and extreme diaper rash flare-ups ever since he was born, so maybe the dermatologist can help us with a lot of perpetual skin problems that he has.

Do you have a pediatric dermatologist in your area or find a dermatologist that you know has lots of experience with kids? All my children have skin issues. My daughter has eczema and when she gets a cold it and other skin issues flare up. Maybe psoriasis is another possibility...children can get it too.

Are the new rashes itchy especially at night or after bath? If so, please ask your doctor to test for scabies. My son recently had scabies and he had pimple like red bumps that spread everywhere. The rashes were super itchy. I hope it is not scabies, but it is best to get it checked out as scabies is quite contagious.

Im thinking allergy to something. Now is the dark tiny little heads more like a black head or a scab? Is he feverish? Grumpy? The rash behind his knee could be ezcema which could be very hard to get rid of my BIL has it really bad he has to watch what products he uses and anything with petroleum makes it worst. Kids with ezcema are more prone to other skin issues but if he broke out with these little bumps im thinking hand foot and mouth disease but that is usually accompanied by fever and irritability. Google images of hand foot and mouth disease and see if that is what the rash looks like. BUT since it has spread to his face I would def keep an eye on his breathing just incase it is an allergy to something. it could be several other things too but if ever in doubt take him to a different dr.

Take him to a dermatologist. We dealt with bad excema for the 1st year and finally went to a dermatologist (who basically cured our son from outbreaks after one visit). Peds aren't specialists. They are wonderful for the normal cold/virus stuff but anything that doesn't resolve after 1-2 visits with a pediatrician needs a specialist in that field. Lesson learned!!
