My 6.5 month old has developed a rash under his chin on his neck & beginning of his chest, from spitting up & drooling so much. Do you have any suggestions with how to deal with this? I have used a diaper ointment, but I'm not sure I'm using the best one for under his chin. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I used the aquafor and lanolin, depending on which I was closer to at the time, and it cleared up. He goes through about 12-15bibs a day! And, thanks for the advice about getting it looked at. If it didn't clear up so quickly, I certainly would have (and will in the future if it returns). Thanks again!

When my son got any rash on his face
I always used lanolin because the label said it didn't have to be washed off before breastfeeding.
It also tended to work fairly well on his chapped cheeks.

We just had that problem with our 18 month old, too. We found that the low-maintenence solution is to use the Target brand daily moisturizing lotion (like Aveeno, but a lot cheaper). The slightly higher-maintenence, but a lot faster-acting and more effective, is a mixture of these three things: petroleum jelly, vitamin e cream, and pink baby lotion (like johnson and johnson). Mix it up with a hand mixer and store as you would any other lotion. It is awesome stuff!

The other key is to keep putting it on. Every diaper change, before naps, after naps, etc. That really helps a lot!

The best thing to do is keep it clean and dry. Keep a bib on him and change it several times a day

This sounds weird but when this happened to my daughter our pediatrician suggested lotramin (athlete's foot cream) It works super quickly and better then the diaper creams! Wiping it after every eating and changing bibs super often is key!

I would put aquaphor on it--it will create a sort of barrier to the drool. Make sure he is wearing bibs that have a waterproof backing on them to help keep the drool off his chest. Continue to mop up his face often =)

If you use a vaseline product under his chin it should just run off. You can try the Penetine Cream, it is a much heavier cream that you use for their bottoms as well. Vaseline normally doesn't let water in as in moisture. Give it a try and see if it works for you. Good luck!

Eczema cream is great to use because it is thick and restores moisture to the area applied. We swear by eczema cream because we found that it has many uses :) Petrollium Jelly is usually recommended by doctors. Same concept, and suggested to be placed on child before they go to sleep or right when they fall asleep. Just make sure you dab the drool/spit up off and not rub because it'll make it worse. If your baby doesn't have teeth yet, be on the look out :)

I'd actually have this looked at... I know infants who developed yeast problems in this area due to constant wetness and not enough air (chubby little chins). If it is a yeast problem, the suggestion of lotramin might be best, but I'd wait and let your doc recommend something.

I'd agree with Anne on the Aquaphor.

Our son sucks his thumb and gets it really chapped in the winter months. We asked the pediatrician what we could use (my husband was trying chapstick - hilarious) - he recommended Aquaphor because it's safe if ingested.

I'd not recommend diaper ointment because of the proximity to his mouth and possible ingestion.

Good luck.

Had the same problem as you with my son - he was an awful drooler! I coated him with Aquaphor as often as I could during the day and a really thick coat at night. We also went through a ton of bibs a day and a least 3 shirt/outfit changes from drool. I had to do this until he finally quit drooling at age 3! Aquaphor is a great barrier to keep the drool off their skin!
