Hi, my 8 month old baby boy has a rash on his chin from drooling. Can anyone tell me what is good to put on it at night before bed. Of course, I'd love it to be something natural but I'm willing to try something tried and true as well. Poor little guy is still smiling big and beautiful with his red chin. It makes me so sad!
Thank you so much for all of your advice. I think we got to the rash before it was too bad and spread under his chin. I had some lanolin so I used that during the day. We also picked up some baby lotion that had calendula in it, I think it was called Weleda from Switzerland. The lotion almost cleared it up overnight. I plan to pick up a few of the other items that were suggested to have on hand. Now I know where to come when I have problems or questions. I am amazed by all of your kindness and generosity with your advice. Thank you so much!

I use this amazing lotion called Renew. It got rid of my nephew's eczema in 4 days and the best part is there are no chemicals or toxins! My kids call it magic lotion. If you'd like I can show you the websit where I bought it. The company is also offering it free this month.

I use bag balm for that type of thing. I also use it for diaper cream and my 21 month old rarely gets a diaper rash. You can get it at WalMart (in the pet section:)).

Ah, another premie. My daughter was born 10 weeks early and was in the NICU for 5 1/2 weeks. She is now 16 1/2 months, weighs 23 pounds and talks, runs, and acts just like a full-term baby. It was a rough first year, but now she's great. What I used for her drool rash was aquaphor. It can be kind of messy because it doesn't fully absorb into the skin like lotion, but it leaves a protective barrier on the skin, plus helps heal it. It also works great for diaper rashes. It can be in the baby section at Target, but I've also found it at normal grocery stores near the baby wash, lotion, etc. Good luck!

Something that helped me up until my son turned 3 or 4 was Lansinoh Lanolin. I loved that stuff in the purple tube. It's pure Lanolin. Also, it's made for breastfeeding mothers. You can place it on their cheeks in the winter to keep from chapping, on their bum when they get a diaper rash, on their lips when they are chapped, if they get a burn on their hand and you're afraid to put a medicine on it they might accidentally ingest. It's relatively harmless. They can put it in their mouth and it won't hurt them. Best part, it costs, at most places, less than $10 a tube, you can find it almost anywhere (I get mine at Wal Mart), and it lasts for awhile. Hope this helps! :D

Both of our kids have sensitive skin and we use Badger brand Baby Balm. It's a very thick blend of oils and beeswax. Creates a great moisture barrier. Good for overnight diaper area as well!

try lansinoh (or any other brand of lanolin) it's the really thick vasaline-type product that is usually used for nursing mom soreness. although, a little goes a long way so buy the smallest tube. you'll find it in any baby isle. It's great too because you don't have to worry about eating it, it's meant to go in mouths and on skin.

My youngest licks her mouth all the time. At nine yrs. old she always looks as though a vaccuum (sp?) has attacked her. Vaseline has been the only thing that has helped her. Good luck.

You the same stuff you use on his bottom for diaper rash. His rash is because his chin is wet because of drooling.

Anything that is a barrier to the moisture. We used vaseline, but you can use lanolin, aquaphor, or bag balm as well. Just know that it doesn't necessarily work right away! My son had his rash for a while but it was less intense when we used the vaseline for his naps! As the drool subsides, the rash will too.

I used Petroleum gel and Olive oil (cold pressed) and than I learned how to make my own grease from meat fats. This is what they used last century for babies when there were no diapers to protect the baby's skin. They use to put it all over the babies body. It also helped with my boy eczema and it is all natural. Let me know if you would like to know how to do it. Good luck!

The best thing I can think of is 1) a dry soft baby bib, or 2) a dry soft washcloth.
My first thought when reading your post was that he's teething. My son was a horrible drooler when teething and would got through 3+ shirts/tops in a day. He hated bibs and we had a hard time keeping them on him except to feed him.
Most likely the rash/redness is irritation from drooling, and there really isn't anything that I've heard of that will make it go away, just do your best to keep his little chin dry.
Hope this helps,
Melissa

Hi! It's been a whle, but when my son was that age, he drooled CONSTANTLY. I always had a bib on him because his shirts would get all soggy. I'm not sure if this is still available, but Gerber made this wonderful face balm (like lip balm for chapped faces). It worked really well and was formulated for baby faces. Good luck!

My daughter was the exact same way. Anything that will create a barrier will work. We ours got really bad, I used Hydrocortisone on it and then layers it will Lasinoh (yes, the nipple cream stuff) or a little vaseline or Bourdeaux (the people that make the butt paste have something for faces too-I just can't remember what it is called.) All that saliva just makes a mess. I can always tell when my daughter is teething because her face starts getting that red rash again! She finally got her second year molars, so hopefully we are done for awhile.

Hello M.,
You can try Calendula ointment (found in PCC, Whole Foods, Vitaminlife, Super Supplements in homeopathic section). It heals swiftly many skin irritations as well as scratches, burns and bites. The issue though is that this is an ongoing stimulation due to the drooling, so you may have to stay on guard and mop it up during the day more often to allow that skin a better chance :)
Hope this helps,
Liz

Any of the products that other Moms have recommended that puts a barrier in between will help. Another helpful hint for Moms of droolers is to have another barrier between his clothing and his skin. You can see check out www.babychaleco.com to see what I'm talking about. You'll love it! A bonus of that is MUCH LESS laundry! Good luck, M.. I hope the rash goes away soon.

My daughter has this too...she's 1 and teething. The absolute best thing we found was Boudreaux's Baby Kisses. I've seen it a babies R us. Here's the link to their site - http://www.buttpaste.com/BLButtPaste.php Their products work like magic and are very gentle. We even put it on scratchs to help with the healing. My son had a terrible rash on his chin and chest from drooling, couldn't change the bibs fast enought. We used Unpetrolium jelly (like Vaseline but without the petrolium base) and it worked pretty well. I really like the suggestion of the lanolin product since it is so thick and food grade.

Hi M.,
I have learned a lot about skin care recently and one of the things I have learned is to stay away from ANY petroleum or mineral oil products. I can give you a ton of reasons for that but my advice is to use a really good quality diaper rash cream. Arbonne has the best one as far as I am concerned, it will even get the red and itch out of bug bites plus it is water resistant so it would protect from the drool. You can order it online at www.arbonne.com or find a local consultant that can order it for you. All of their products are pure, safe and beneficial.

Hi M.,
Bag Balm is the wonder stuff. It's in the green metal tin with a cow on it. My Great Grandmother would swear by that for rashes (also great for diaper rash!). I use it so much for my girls!!
The other thing that worked for us was the lanolin cream. This also works great for chapped lips and dry skin patches.
Good luck!

Something that I have come to believe in and use on absolutly EVERYTHING is Aquaphor ointment. It is made by Eucerin. It has helped with so many of my kids little rashes that pop up all over their bodies.
