9 Month Old and a High Chair Problem

I have a 9 month old son, he is extremely strong and silly. Here is the problem. We have a high chair (The First Years Infant to Toddler Space Saver seat) attached to a light weight wooden Ikea dining room chair (love the set it fits the 4 of us perfectly). My son rocks (and I mean hard, he slams himself back and forth in the chair), I have put hand weights on the bottom of the chair to help weight it down. I sit right next to him at all times but I'm very worried that he will flip it over and seriously hurt himself. I had the same type of high chair (space saver but a different brand) with my oldest son and never had this problem so that is why I'm asking for advise. I hold the back of the chair so he can't rock and I tell him no but there isn't alot that can be done for a 9 month old as far as disciple right now. Should I get a new stand alone high chair and go back to this one when he gets a little older? I really don't want to buy new gear but I want my baby safe. Any advise or personal experience with this problem? I really need some guidance with this issue. I have tried put the back of the chair against the wall and a countertop, he only rocks harder.

What can I do next?

Is there a way you can place the chair against a wall so he can't rock it ? You might have to move the table out and back in each time you set him in it.

That does sound dangerous and I would have the same concern. I'd just not have him sit in it because its a flipping over. My only thought is getting a different high chair. Ones with wheels are fun. My little one would shake and and rock and the chair would slide across the kitchen floor. So, even if you don't want to, you might have to. Try some 2nd hand stores. That might be useful.

My children both started "fighting" the regular high chair around 9 or 10 months and I had to move them to a space saver type seat...they figured out how to escape and they would stand up, plus they both kicked and screamed when we tried to put them into it. Sounds to me like the chair is the issue. Before I bought another high chair, I would try it on a heavier dining room chair. I know several people with this brand of chair and never heard of any of them rocking in it. And a few weeks ago I had company and put my daughters chair on a metal folding chair...that lasted 10 minutes before she realized she could bounce hard and make it move. I think the chair is just too light weight.

I would look for a new chair to put your high chair in. The legs should be wide spaced so he would have a hard time rocking it back and forth.

Also are you possible indirectly enforcing this and it has become a game for him? Is he looking for your attention by doing this and having a blast cause he gets a reaction out of you? While you can't really discipline him right now you can shape some of his behavior by the type of attention you're giving him.
