Hi all! I am due any time now with our second precious son! I am wanting to purchase a really great sling to carry him around in. I bought a New Native sling with our first son and never was able to carry him around comfortably (BIG boy: 9lbs 1oz. 22in.). I am tall and a little rounder than the average girl. I am also large chested. We have a Bjorn and LOVE it, however it isn't ideal for newborn carrying. Does anyone have any advice to give me?

What can I do next?

I loved my Peanut Shell for my baby who was 8 pounds 8 ounces. We used it for about the first three months, although I can now use it again with her sitting up in it. She loved it when she was a newborn and would sleep in it. Good luck!

Hi Jennifer, I have a friend who is a Doula and taeches baby wearing classes, these slings and soft carriers are not your typical ones that hurt your back but even better. If you are in the OKC metro I highly suggest attending one of her classes. Her website is www.BabywearingDoula.com and there is a link on there to contact her. I wore my son until he no longer would let me, I still wear him on occasion and he will be 3 at the end of March.

Ok I just seen that you're in AL, well you could email Piper and maybe she can put you in touch with someone there that can show you the correct way to wear your son.

Hi Jennifer,
I used a NOJO sling with my 2nd son. I am not tall, but am also "a little round" as you put it. He wasn't very big at birth, but I used the sling until he was over a year. I was actually more comfortable after he got a little bigger. He loved to be cuddled and carried and that sling saved me. Good luck.

the pocket slings are no good. we have had two over the shoulder baby holder slings and have liked them. they can be a little bulky in the shoulder, but very comfortable. i am tall, and i had nine pounders too. i carried mine til they were almost 2 pretty comfortably. i love the slings when they were small, but i also have to put in my plug for the Ergo baby carrier. yes, it looks like a bjorn, so you might be tempted to skip it but check it out. it is so comfortable, and i can carry my four year old in it for hours with ease. super product, one of the best baby cariers out there. my daughter loves it.

I have a peanut shell and a moby wrap and LOVE them both. The peanut shell is nice cause you can just throw it over your neck and put your baby in. I love the moby wrap cause you can adjust the wrap, but does take some learning and time to put it on. Its not very hard after you get the hang of it...plus the moby wrap is cheaper!

I have several slings and love them all for different reasons.

1. Pouch (like the New Native)- I love it for the "poppability" factor, it's quick and easy for little quick trips.

2. Ring Sling - I love how adjustable it is. Once you get passed the learning period with it, it is a life saver! I can even wear my four year old in it!

3. Becco - This is a soft structured carrier, sort of like a Bjorn but cuter. It's fabulous for long trips and I can wear her front or back. It also has an inner harness for little babies and I love that.

4. Mei Tai - I made mine but I love it. It just takes a little extra time to tie it all up. But again, you can wear baby front or back and I like that.

Congrats on the new baby and I hope I helped!

Well, I'm leaving to go out of town, so I don't have a lot of time, but these are great: http://babycharmerslings.com/
She custom makes it to your measurements and they can carry thru toddlerhood. LOVE mine!!

I LOVE my HotSling. You can get them at Target for about $35. You actually buy it in a size apropriate for your needs. Its like finding a shirt that works. Its designed just like a large blanket that you wear. And it converts as you baby gets older. Cradled for a newborn, up on the hip at a few months old, and strapped to the back for an older baby or toddler. Its great!! If you don't find the size you need at Target, you can get them at HotSling.com or on Ebay(thats where I got mine). Good luck and congrats on your new baby!!

I have a Moby D wrap and love it. I used it from the time my son was born and he's 6 months (17lbs) and I still use it. It takes a bit of practice putting it on you and getting the baby in it but once you master that it's so comfy and worn correctly it will not hurt your back. The Moby D is about 3 ft shorter than the original Moby Wrap. Just fyi.

The sling that I used for my 4 kids was similar to these: http://www.babymoonslings.com/, just a piece of cloth with 2 rings to keep it from slipping. I actually found mine at a knock-off department store where it cost me $20, and it was GREAT! So simple, and it worked as a nursing cover, too.

I've used a Honeywear Sling (not at all padded enough and a part was broken upon arrival), Snuggly from Wal-Mart (awful!), and a Storchenwiege wrap, and by far I love the Ergo the most. A little pricey, but it lasts through toddlerhood and you get a variety of carries out of it, most of them being extremely easy.

Get the insert for carrying an infant up to 4 months. I tried a blanket and it didn't work. But then again, maybe that was because it was summer in AR - hot! The insert is more temperature-neutral, doesn't retain heat. It's also more supportive than a blanket, though, and I really didn't want to take chances, so I went ahead and ordered the insert. It was exactly what I needed.

The Ergo is so easy to put on, cozy, snuggly, safe and keeps your hands free so you can do whatever you want around the house! Also, I've found that it extends nap-time - if she's sleeping alone on an empty mattress, she'll wake pretty frequently. If I don't get to her in time and she wakes up enough, that's it for nap-time. And I have to jump up and run, argh. When she's in her Ergo or Storchenwiege wrap, she'll sleep much more peacefully. If you do it from the start, you don't have to be quiet, either, because of course your baby is already used to daily-life noise.

Oh, and you can nurse discreetly, too. I've nursed my baby discreetly at *Wal-Mart* in the Ergo! With people all around! The hood helps for that, and it also protects against sun, and some rain and wind. The hood also helps baby to sleep when in the older, upright postition. The head falls back against it and it's the cutest thing. Bonus :)

Have fun! Congratulations!

My husband and I use the ergo baby carrier and we couldn't be happier. We checked out lots of different slings, but decided on ergo use because we will be able to use it for alot longer than most slings (age range is infant - toddler). Check out the web site and see what you think. Like I said we really love ours!
