Advice on Moving Baby to His Own Room

My son is now three months old. He sleeps in a pack-n-play in our room, and still wakes twice a night for feedings. Lately, he has been waking more frequently and just needs patting to be put back to bed. Could we be waking him somehow? I'm wondering if we should move him to the crib in his own room. I like the ease of having him right there when he wakes, but we will have to move him eventually. Our room is pretty cold in the winter, and his will be much warmer. When we tried naps in the crib last month, he was so excited by the crib bars that he had an impossible time getting to sleep. When we put him down completely asleep, he would wake back up within 10 minutes or so looking at those crib bars. The pack-n-play is like a navy blue cave for him, much less stimulating. So, my question is when should we move him, and any advice for how to make the switch?

What can I do next?

Definitely start with moving the pack & play into his room (sooner rather than later). Then try placing him in his crib after a feeding in the night. The hardest & most important thing is to be consistent. It's easy to revert back to the old ways when he wakes back up or doesn't go to sleep. Just keep your patience and be prepared for a couple of long nights.

Just a quick thought - but is it possible he is on a growth spurt? My boys always woke up more frequently for a week or two when they were and then would go back to their regular sleeping habits.

My older one I moved at 3 months, the younger at 6, but both were relatively easy transitions for us. The younger one still sleeps at nap time in our room, but otherwise the two sleep together. Best of luck!

He may need more room and he's waking himself up - my youngest did just that and slept soundly through the night when we moved him to his crib. We didn't do anything different, same bed time routine, but put him in the crib instead of the bassinett. Good luck!

Try moving the pack and play into his room to start. He's used to sleeping there and then you could transition later to the crib. Good luck:)

Hi B.,
I know when my son was little like that, a lot of time it was harder for ME to change things up than it was for him! I always felt like "if it's not broke..." But sometimes we've got to take charge and make a change. The older he gets, the harder it will be for him to get used to his own crib/room.
There are a lot of things you can do to get him to prefer his new room. Cool night light, soft relaxing music on a CD player, projector that shows the constellations on the ceiling, etc, etc, etc. Just establish a routine including the crib and stick with it. Get a good video monitor to use so you can keep an eye on him.
I have heard that when a baby sleeps in the same room as the parents, the parents disturb the baby more than the baby disturbs the parents. Good luck!
