Hi-I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has had gastric bypass and a baby after. Or just the bypass. I am seriously considering it right now, but I have an 18 month old and know that after GB you have to wait like 2 years to have a baby. I want to have at least one more and have a lot of weight to lose. I had a horrible pregnancy with every problem imaginable. My OB joked that I was the poster child for everything that can go wrong in a pregnancy. I feel like a lot of the problems I had were because of my weight. Any advice is so appreciated.-Have a great day!

Hi H.! I am stationed in Japan. I had Gastric Bypass Surgery on 12/8/04. I had my first baby 08/27/2007! I had a great pregnancy, and only gained 25 pounds. You always have to remember that the surgery is only a tool, but it works as hard as you do (after the first year) I am back to my 100 pound loss, and feeling good. The only thing that I am not sure of, and my surgeon did not seem to know either, was I had a decreased amount of breast milk. I could only breast feed until about 4months old and she got too big for the supply and demand. But, I have talked to other Gastric patients and their milk supply was fine. It was probably just me. I have no problems answering any questions you might have.

Hi :)

I thought you couldnt have kids with a GB. Since u can never really eat enuff to give the baby and u the right amount of nutrients. I was thinking about getting it but then I read that. There is another form of the bypass surgery, called Lap Band and Tricare pays for that now. and it is reversible and u can loosen the band so u can get pregnant.

http://www.lapband.com/

That site has alot of good info on it :) I hope I helped u in some way.

If I were you I would talk to the doctor that would do the GB on any questions and concern about that. You can also ask the doctor if there is anybody that he has done the GB on that has had children afterwards. I had a tummy tuck after my 2nd child and I went on to have a 3rd and no problem with the incision and everything. I know what you mean by having problems with your pregnancies. I have had problems in 2 out of 3 pregnancies. So no more for me. Godd luck. Also try looking for a support group.

I just heard about this site Living After Weight Loss Surgery. It has message boards, a blog and other info that might be helpful. Good luck with your decision.

Hi H.
My best friend of 22 years had the gastric bypass surgery. She couldn't be happier with the surgery. She did however have a rare complication about six months after the surgery. Her intestines got a kink or crimp (however you want to call it) and she had to go in for emergency surgery. She's been fine ever since.
She also has an 18 month old. She didn't have any special problems or issues with her pregnancy but, she did wait the recommended two years before she got pregnant. Now, her and her husband are working on baby number two.
From a friend perspective, I couldn't be happier for her. For many years she suffered from depression. It's hard to see a friend so miserable. I was thrilled when she researched and decided to do the surgery. She is happier and healthier than she has ever been.
Don't fool yourself though, you can't go back to your old eating habits, especially if you are going to get pregnant.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Sincerely,
K. Langhofer

I've had a lot of family members have the surgery, including myself. I'm 26 years old and don't have a baby yet, so this was a huge question I had before having the surgery. My husband and I have been married for 5 years now, and we are really ready for children, so finding out that I had to wait for 18 months really made me sad, but we both decided that my health was more important than having an unhealthy pregnancy/baby.

2 of my cousins have had the surgery, and 1 of them is currently pregnant. She's having a great pregnancy so far. My friend Liz had it, and she just had a healthy baby boy. All the people/friends I know who have had the surgery, and have had babies after have said that having the surgery was the best decision they made for the health of their child. I'm soooo looking forward to being able to start trying next year. October will be my 1 year mark... and my husband will be deployed at the time, so we'll start trying when he gets back, which should be enough time after surgery for us to start ttc :)

Hopefully this helped. So far, since my surgery on Sep 28th, I've lost 50 lbs... so worth it already! Just pray about it, and take it from me, and I'm sure anyone else that's had the surgery... it's the best decision you'll make, especially if you want a family...

Merry Christmas, and happy decision making ;)
