Anyone Had a Baby Root Canal Done on a 4 Yr Old?

The 4 yr old boy that we just got custody of went to see the dentist yesterday, and half of his teeth are decaying! They said he needs 5 fillings and 2 therapuetic pulpotemies - or baby root canals. This will take 4 visits, and they will give him lidocane injections to numb him for the work (2 injections on the first visit).

Does anyone have any experience with this? I am afraid that this much work will be traumatizing to him, especially with the big needles. I'm not sure if all of this is really necessary, or if the dentists are just trying to make money. I'm thinking about transferring the records to Children's to get the work done there, but I think it will probably take a long time before we can get him in.

Any advice or suggestions? Thanks!!

I agree that you should definitely get at least one more opinion before you make any big decisions! My daughter, who is now not quite 2 years old, broke her front tooth last July and we went to Children's Hospital Dental Clinic for a walk-in appointment the next morning. We loved the dentist that we saw that day and when we found out he had an office in Powell we started seeing him there. His name is Dr. Jeff Milton at Olentangy Pediatric Dentistry.

Good luck!

We had to have a root canal done on my then 5 year old's back tooth. We have a very patient dentist. The first try as soon as my son saw the needle (the dentist kept it hidden until the last moment, but my son caught sight of it) he started screaming and moving and was unable to calm down enough. So we tried another appt. with a tranquilizer pill from the dentist that I gave him beforehand. Again same result. He was groggy but started grunting and squiggling and closed him mouth tight. 3rd appt. we tried the nitrous gas, which doesn't put them under but makes em groggy....same grunting and sqiurming and no open mouth. 4th appt. the dentist put him under, did the work superquick, and we took him home. He's now 17, and still chooses to see this dentist, and has dental shots just fine. My advice is if you have to have something big done, put him under so he doesn't develop a fear of any dentist because that fear could cause problems throughout his life if he chooses to avoid the dentist.

My oldest who is now 11 had to have some work done as well when he was 4. They gave us another option which I HIGHLY recommend. We were also told that it would take up to 4 maybe 5 visits, depending on how well he cooperated (tell that to a 4 year old). The other option was to take him to Children's Hospital where they put him under and do all the work at once. He had to have to caps put on some of his back teeth. Those teeth just fell out this year. He has had perfect teeth since.

It was his regular dentist that did the work, they just had to do it at Childrens. You may even want to ask your peditrician.

Hope this helps....R.

I would do some serious investigating on this one. Even get a second and maybe a third opinion. If he is four, depending which teeth they are, he may start losing them as soon as within the next year. If all of the problems are in teeth that will fall out before he is ten, then you need to weigh your options. If they are not causing him any pain, then why put him through all of that just so the teeth can fall out in the next few years. Not to mention, I'm sure you will have to pay out of pocket for some of this.

If you want a second opinion my daughter's dentst is GREAT! She is in Rocky River and her # is ###-###-####. Her name is Dr. Jarmoszuk and she has kids of her own. A friends child needed a lot of dental work and they put him to sleep. It went great and they did everything in 1 visit! Good Luck.

Hey, I'll tell you what, I've never had a 4 year old with this problem, but let me tell you something...I've had one child that seems to be very accident-prone. Her main objective was to fall on the ground and ruin teeth so we'd need canals done. The Lord has been so faithful to us in this matter in that we always had good experiences with it. Remember, the thoughts you put on in the universe come back -just like seed planting and it's crucial that you look at this with a positive outlook. Your child is God's creation and precious! Be patient about the wait that you have, and you need to get this boy on a supplement. If you need advise, I know of some really powerful antioxidant!

Have a blessed day!

I've had this same situiation with a couple of our kids, my best advice is to have him knocked out, and get it all done in one shot. We have a very independent 10 yr old who at the time of his dentist visit was 3 and would not let me help brush his teeth for any reason, result tooth decay in molars. We had to take him to a different dentist because the 1st one traumatized him, it worked out alot better with him knocked out. Our very daring 5 yr old girl was doing flips on her bunk beds, hit a tooth, it turned yucky and had to be pulled, while the dentist was great with her, she is still really freaked about the dentist, which sucks because 1 month after the 1st tooth she climbed on the kitchen counter, slipped hitting her remaining front tooth which is now of coarse turning gray, KNOCK HIM OUT its the best way. Good luck, M.

When my son was 4 yrs old the dentist did a root canal on him and it was horrible!!! He was in so much pain that they said they were going to just pull the tooth because it was a baby tooth anyway. And this was right after they did the root canal. I switched our dentist and explained to the new dentist what happened and he was upset. He said that some dentist do that for the money and there is no reason to do a root canal and then pull the tooth. And yes I was charged for the root canal and the pulling of the tooth. I would suggest getting a second opinion before going through with this. You don't want to make the 4 yr. old feel like he can't trust you to protect him. If you just got custody of him and do something that may not need to be done that is painful he might have trust issues with you.
