I haven't seen Pretty Little Liars, but we are watching The Vampire Diaries on Netflix right now. It's very much like Twilight. Oh, yeah, Grimm. We all like Grimm. And The Walking Dead.
So, we're looking for another show. We're caught up on Grey's Anatomy. We watched Buffy and I let her watch the Twighlight series Movies. 3 years ago when Pretty Little Liars started, I thought it was a bit mature for her (she's 12yo).... but now, I don't know. She's watching Teen Wolf.... but I just can't get into it.
Mostly I think the new show needs to have something for ALL of us. We've had a ton of good conversations while watching Grey's and Buffy. About choices and consequences and life. So, I'm looking for something that will have the same effect.
Anyone have any input?

We like watching Doctor Who as a family. Some of the later series have gotten darker than I let my 6 year old watch but most of the time I don't know why since the scariest episodes, the ones that keep me awake at night afraid to close my eyes, are her favorites and she wants to watch them over and over and over.
It's an old show, but it rebooted in 2005, so starting there is a good place. It's on netflix as Doctor Who, but there's Classic Doctor Who, which are the old ones.
It's sci-fi/fantasy with a time-traveling alien who generally takes a human companion or 2 or 3 with him. It's not one you have to worry about a lot (or any, though Captain Jack does a good amount of innuendo) of sex in, which I like. I'm not sure what all you guys like, but I also enjoyed Buffy and watch Grey's, and Doctor Who is one that everyone in my family enjoys. Even the campy older ones where you can tell the alien is a person wrapped in green bubble wrap.
I would also second Once Upon a Time. My husband and I are really enjoying it!
Hi. My daughter turned 13 in late Sept. and watched PLL with me after school (we DVRed it), This was last year while she was still 12, going on 13. She liked it, and though it does have adult situations, it goes into the why's, how's circumstances and results of the decisions they make. She lost interest in it, but I am a die-hard fan. It's a bit hard to keep up with, so if you have missed any seasons or many episodes, I'd look them up on Netflex or something of the like so you can catch up and not be lost.

Almost everything my children watch (8 and 10) is on Netflix. There is so little on TV that I think is worth it. They love Psych, Monk, Columbo (old style detective shows in general), Dick Van Dyke Show, Twilight Zone, and Alfred Hitchcock. The only thing my 10 year old has seen on current TV is a little bit of Downton Abbey, which she loved seeing after we visited the Biltmore.
Every once in a while, there are good kid movies on ABC Family, but the commercials for Pretty Little Liars come on and I want to turn the TV off - even the commercials are over the top for their ages.
We don't watch much tv at all, though -- before bed we usually all read together or play games. After school, it's activities and homework. GMA in the mornings and a rented movie on the weekends. I don't know how we'd fit more in. But that's the nice thing about these old shows -- they're good and just as engaging as they were to us as kids and I can control when they're on.
I love PLL. Die hard fan. I think it would be okay to watch because there's things you could talk about.. Consequences, etc. They also have books. I think you would get into it as well. It's very easy to get hooked. If you do decide to watch make sure you start from season 1.
what about once upon a time. Its fairy tales but in a whole different way. Might be good to try.
I gave up after season 3 ... it just became old.
Add never seen Teen Wolf, but there is a lot of sex education windows on PLL and almost any "Teen" show these days at least ONE charachter is having sex.
Emily Owens M.D. is a good suggestion, but it is being cancelled sadly.
Once Upon A Time is a GREAT family series if you are not watching it yet. My tv comes from Hulu & Netflix, not too much help sorry.
Well, the dovetail to Buffy is the Angel series. But she's 12. Maybe Angel is too mature for her. Then again, the season where Buffy and Spike are lovers is too mature for her, in my view...
Maybe you could cherry-pick the Angel episodes and withhold some that are too violent?

I think the title itself should reveal whether your 12 year old daughter watches it. I don't think our culture realizes what these kind of shows are doing to our society. It is breaking it down to "anything goes". Not cool in my book.
