Please help! We're about to move into a new apt.and I need help with school districts. There are A LOT of schools that do not meet the state's standards for academics. My daughter will be in second grade. She's coming from a charter school out of state. The largest class she's ever been in had 17 kids with classroom mom and teacher. I NEED a GOOD school down here. No one wants to say which schools are the best/worst. What issues are going on there. Any info/opinions on local public or Chartered schools would be greatly appreicated!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we're down to two.... The Parks at Treepoint in Woods district and The Pavilion in Key. Now I think it's down to which will be all around better.

I live in Arlington and I teach in a charter school in Euless called Treetops School International. They have small classes with a friendly, knowledgeable, caring staff. I would highly recommend that you take a look at the school.

I am a parent of children that currently attend Ashworth Elementary on Silo Rd. The closest intersection is Matlock Rd. ad Sublett Rd. It was one of the two elementary schools names exemplary in the AISD this year. It is an exception among public schools. It has a great group of teachers that do whatever is necessary for their students to succeed. They teach respect, which is very important in this day and age where so many children are disrespectful to their elders. They believe that if you expect more from a child, the child will rise to the expectation. They have high expectations. If you would like to know more you can send me a message.

If your daughter is showing any behavior problems, then Arlington school district is not the one for you. As far as academics, they are a VERY large district, and some of the elementary schools are better than others as is true in all School Districts. Lewisville ISD is also not very supportive in the behavior problems dept, but has a good reputation as a school district. Grapevine-Colleyville has a great reputation, and Midlothian has a very good reputation. Red Oak ISD also has a good reputation.
Coppell used to have a great reputaion, but they have had a significant turnover in teachers and staff, so it is probably best to wait and see what happens in that district. Stay out of Dallas ISD and Ft Worth ISD. I have heard a lot of complaints about Richardson ISD. Have heard good things aobut Plano, Keller, Carol, Northwest, Birdville, Allen, HEB and Weatherford ISD. Once you choose the school district you want to be in, you can go to the Texas Dept of Education website, and review which elementary schools in a particular school district are labeled as recognized or exemplary.

My son attends Mansfield school district. The only school in Mansfield district that I've heard bad reviews on, is Timberview High school in Arlington (Mansfield school district). I've had no problems so far. My son is going to the 5th grade.

welcome to the metroplex S.. i have taught third grade in the Birdville ISD for the past three years and grew up going to Birdville schools. As with all large school districts some schools are "better" than others and that can change easily from year to year. i'm not an expert or anything but from what i hear arlinton isd is not looked upon as a very high acheiving school district and does have it's fair share of problems. Keller, Birdville, Northwest, and HEB are all very reputable districts however i'm guessing you are moving to arlington so that is where you'll be.

i will tell you this as a third grade teacher in the great state of texas third grade is a HUGE year academically (TAKS testing) and you do want your daughter to be ready for this. best wishes in your search and welcome again, it's a great metroplex for families, lot's of activities, etc.

take care,
C. White

My kids go to a charter school in far South Euless, North Arlington Area. It's called Treetops International. My kids are in classes of 15-18 kids (1st and Kindy) and they're doing so, so well. It's a different atmosphere than most public schools. More personal, lots more outside time, montessori for the lower grades. The challenge is you have to do coop hours each month - 8 hours per month. Going on field trips, helping at events, light clean up, stuff like that.

By the way, I disagree about HEB. IT may be listed somewhere as great, but the schools that my children and my nieces and nephews have attended in Euless and Bedford have been dreadful. Too many kids to too few teachers.

Hi, I subscribed to this site because of my grandkids. We live in Arlington, but in Kennedale school district. Before we moved here we lived about 3 miles away, and my children went to JB Little Elementary off of Little Rd. My oldest daughter was in 4th grade when we moved. She went there almost 5 years & loved it. Mary Moore off of Park Springs is also suppose to be good. If you go to the AISD site, I bet they have a list of the School ratings from the State required TAKS test. It should say which schools had the highest ratings & which scored unacceptable, The old test was called the TAAS & the highest rating for that was Exemplary, next was Recognized, then Acceptable, I would want my kids to go to a Recognized school at the least. The TAKS test is pretty new & much more challenging so it may be hard to find any Exemplary Schools. Good luck,
D.

Hi,
I don't know where your new apartment is, but I can tell you that as far as Arlington schools go, Little Elementary is great, as well as Ditto, Pope, Dunn, Moore, and several others in the southwest part of Arlington. Pantego and St. Alban's Episcopal are good private schools. I teach in Mansfield if you need to know anything about those just let me know.

I personally took my kids out of public school. This year they are going to a new school called the Flint Academy. It is a wonderful program and the director is wonderful as well. The web site is www.flintacademy.com. I had my 7 year old in ps for K and part of first but he was so miserable that I took him out. When we went to meet the director of Flint Academy he drilled her and she was up to the challenge, lol. And he liked the answers she gave him. Check it out.

Hi S.,

My name is M. Kidwell & I like you was very skeptical about putting my son back in public schools. We had gone to Little Elementary, which is on Little Rd., for his Pre-K year & absolutely loved it. We went to Dunn Elementary, off of Woodside Dr., for K & 1st & were not that pleased with some of the things that went on there. His K teacher was wonderful & I loved him being there but once he moved to 1st things started going wrong. We then purchased a house & he moved to Miller Elementary, off of Poly Webb & Pleasant Ridge, for 3rd & before the 1st Six Weeks was over I was pulling him out & putting him in a Chartered school in Euless & loved it. Would have loved to have kept him there but gas was just so much to drive back & forth everyday so we had to move him back to Miller after the middle of 4th grade. There is however a Charter school off of Arkansas Ln. called the Arlington Classics Academy. Their website is www.arlingtonclassics.org. So I guess what I am trying to say is after all the long mess of this is that I would suggest Little Elementary for public & Arlington Classics Academy for Charter. You can also go to the AISD website & look at each individual schools websites from there. Hope you find what you are looking for. Good Luck!

Hi, S.! I read in D Magazine that Ashworth is the best public school in Arlington a few years ago. I have two friends with children there, and one loves it. The other put her child there after attending a private school for a few years, so she wasn't as pleased. Ashworth is located in SE Arlington on Silo St., I believe. My kids have been going to Children's University, a private school, for about 5 years, and I love them. I also wanted to let you know we are from Fayetteville, AR, originally. Which town are you from? Hope this helps you out! :0)
