Awareness of Dangerous Game

Back in January this year my 13 year old Son died, He was found hanging in the bathroom by his younger brother, I think he was possible playing what is called the choking game ,pass out , space monkey to name but a few. I had never heard of any of this until after my son had passed. He never had any of the tell tale signs to alert me. (Had I already known about this) I believe this was his very first attempt which was also to be his last.
There are several SIGNS that you should look out for if you have growing children.
Your child may have blood shot eyes, they may have marks around their necks and wear scarfs or high necked clothing to hide the marks, complain of headaches and have severe mood swings.
You can Google the choking game and find out other information surrounding this practice which I think is mostly from playground communication dares and peer pressure.
I am angry with teachers that know this is going on in our schools but they dont think to let US PARENTS have that knowledge.
Given that information we can sit our children down and talk to them about this practice and make them aware of the deadly consequences of taking part.
I Just wish I had been made AWARE of this before it took my Beautiful Sons life.
Please make a point of reading the information given on the GASP web site and dont let this happen to another family.
We now have the long agonising struggle to rebuild not replace the life we had.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

hopefully this will increase mums awareness into the dangers that we cannot always stop our children facing. But knowledge is a gift and can be the gift of a saved childs life. worth everything. I wish I had had that knowledge.
Please continue to publish my question so that more mums read it.

I am so very sorry for your loss, and appreciate your strength in sharing this information. I have never heard of this before. I am shocked and outraged that though it seems quite prevelent among our children, that school officials haven't touched this topic (in our school at least). I plan on bringing this to our school counselor's attention ASAP. Thank you for shedding light on this terrible trend and opening our eyes.

Wow. I just said a little prayer for you A..
They talk about the choking game a lot on the news, so awareness is out there. Very good of you to point out some of the things that have not been talked about on TV tho, the marks on the neck is a very good clue. I bet you will have lots of moms doing a double check from here on out.
Very brave and compassionate of you to post this.....

What a tragedy. I'm so sorry this happened to your family. I heard about this "dangerous game" recently on a news program, and was really shocked and saddened to hear that children do this for "fun". I hope that schools across the country will get involved to make parents and kids aware that this can be deadly. You have my sincere sympathy on your loss :(

I am very sorry to hear about your son. Our middle school sent a letter out to parents about this last year. I found a video on it (i think on the gasp site) and had my older kids sit and watch it. We have a very open relationship, thank god. I agree with you on the importance of being informed about this. Thank you for helping other parents to be aware.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My heart breaks for you and your family.
I was just talking to my soon to be 13 year old son about this game the other day. It hit me in the middle of the night, the idea of this game, and how he needed to hear about it again. Its so scary to think what kids can do in our home, while we are home, let alone while were not with them. I agree with you about teachers telling them about it. And Thank you for putting this out to all the mamapedia moms who might not have heard about this.

I am so sorry to hear about your son't death. I can imagine what you are going through but don't want to imagine the reality of it..Thank you so much for sharing this story. I have heard of this but you forget about things after a while. My children are still small, but I'm sure there will be the same sort of things going on in the future. It's good to be kept aware.

A.,

Thank you for sharing. I will certainly join you in your crusade to educate. I am sorry (no words can truly express) for your loss!

We women are sisters - your loss is mine. I have a 15 year old and a 10 year old. I will certainly be having conversations with them.

I know I live a few hours away - but whatever I can do I will.
