Baby Bruising

Recently I put my 3 onth old in a Bjorn and noticed the next day that she had some bruising on her inner thigh, where the carrier must have pinched some of her little leg rolls. I made sure next time I used it that I was careful to move her little chubbs aside. My concern is that the other day I put her in her Exersaucer for the first time and she was in there for about 10 minutes. The next day both of her upper thighs were severely bruised I'm assuming from the daiper-like seat that they sit in, which is cloth, and I felt terrible. After talking with some people, I feel like this is not normal and made an appointment to see her doc. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

What can I do next?

Dear C.,

I know this might sound crazy, but is there any chance some dye from her diaper, Bjorn or Exersaucer could be rubbing off on her legs making it look like bruises? This happened to me the other day. It took me a day or two to realize that because it was so hot some of the color from the diaper had rubbed off on her legs making it look like gigantic bruises on her inner thighs.

Just a thought and hope it is something as simple as this.

Hi C.,

I have 2 kids of my own and have looked after many babies and toddlers. I have never come across this, and agree with you that it is not normal. I think you did the best thing, making A. appointment with the doctor!

I hope you get good news and that there is a simple way of avoiding it.

Hi C.
The only thing I can think of is maybe the bruising is from lack of iron or some kind of supplement?
I know that some babies and adults for that matter can just bruise easily. Certaing enzymes like bromelin from pineapple juice can help.
Also maybe pad the bottom of the seat to help take stress off the legs...? It's worth a try. Also be sure that what you see are really bruises and not something that rubbed off on her.
Definately check with the doc.

no its not normal but you are going to the doctor so no need to worry, just be stern about your concerns.

aside from that, i would look into other carriers as you may notice your babys legs are in a dangling position. there are many other carrier options that have them more in a siyying position which is more natural. also stick with the baby facing you and not out. as with the excersaucer, i think she is a little young. if you really want to use it, makre sure you have something under her feet, her legs should not be dangling, they should be resting on something so she can push up. its not good to just dangle.
good luck!!!

This is not normal, and it's a good thing you're taking her to the doc.

One possibility - I have a disorder - don't know the name of it - where my body does not store Vitamin K properly. When my body is low on vitamin K, I bruise very easily. I don't think that's the case with your child, since you would probably notice bruising on other parts of her body as well, but just something to consider. Good luck !!!

C.,

Personally I think she is too young. If it is hurting a baby that is a bit older, he/she would probably be able to reposition himself/herself. Neither product is good for a newborn's spine regardless because they cause them to hang by the crotch. They should be in things that cradle them more yet and/or hold them by the bottom. For a carrier, I highly suggest the Ergo Baby Carrier. You would need an infant insert until she is 4 months old. I would hold off on the exersaucer until she is about 5 months old. For now, I would stick with the swing or glider seat or bouncey seat if you have one. I'd almost bet money that you wouldn't see bruising after any of the three and she would have more support for her still very new spine.

L.

It sounds a bit different, but my son was bruising easily and when we checked his blood, he was iron deficient...

He would get a lot of bruises on his shins (14 mths old)

I don't think it is hemophilia - but maybe another (very treatable, etc) condition that I don't remember the name of. My neighbors daughter was older and had bruises on all the parts of her body where she wore pads while rollerblading (wrists, knees, etc) - that was a few years ago and after some blood monitoring and being careful to avoid any head injuries, she has outgrown it. Don't panic and just wait to see what the ped. says... good luck.

definately see the doc to see what they say. as far as the carrier, try the ergo baby carrier.

it's amazingly comfy for mom /dad and baby!!! they sit in a pouch like seat so they aren't hanging from their crotch at all. plus, it's all fabric and they are right against your body at all times. let us know what happens at the doctors... hope all goes well!!!

I noticed the same thing yesterday on my 4 month old son. But he has a long scratch on his thigh which I belive is caused by his stationary walker. I will monitor closely.
You should definitely check with your pediatrician.

I have a bjorn and though her legs do get red, they've never bruised. Check with your ped.

THIS IS JUST MY GUESS. a little boy my mom took care of when i was little had it, and he bruised like crazy. as far as i know he is leading a normal life as a healthy young man. dont worry if it is this, it isnt a horrible horrible thing.

i hope this helps and that all is well,

I am not a medical professional, but i use to work in the bleeding disorder community. Many times especial girls are not diagnosed with bleeding disorders until very late in life. Many people think only boys can have them, but girls can and often in boys and girls bruising is the first signs on the skin. If you haven't figured this out yet, talk to your doctor about it. It can even be a mild disorder with minimal symptoms like bruising and nose bleeds.

Hi C., I understand your concern. I don't know for sure even though I have been a mom for over 40 years but as an adult, bruising could be from a vitamin deficiency. I would check with the pediatrician just to be sure. Grandma Mary
