I've been looking at the Moby Wrap and the Baby K'tan, but the k'tan isn't for babies under 8lbs and I can't seem to find one way or the other if the Moby is..... I'm wanting this to use when my son is newborn, and since my first baby wasn't even 6lbs, I doubt my son will be 8lbs at birth!
Does anybody know if the Moby can be used for smaller babies, or if there are other carriers like the Moby or K'tan that can be used for babies under 8lbs?
My son left the hospital at 5lbs. I tried to Moby but both he an I preferred the Baby K'tan. To this day, 10 months later, I still LOVE my K'Tan.
You can use the k'tan for smaller babies. There are a couple of positions you can't do, but I'm assumng that is the case with the Moby. I absolutely LOVE my k'tan!!!
I used a Slingling pouch carrier for my son from birth until he was a year old. It isn't a wrap, but has plenty of different positions that you can use to carry your baby. It was SO comfortable and easy on my back. It is for full term babies over 6 pounds. They are custom made from your measurements. I highly recommend the Slingling!
I don't know specifically, but I think the moby starts at 5lbs. As long as they aren't a preemie they should be fine. I started wearing my guy at birth, but he was born 8lbs. But I think it would be fine for smaller babies, it's very adjustable.
The Moby is a great carrier for brand-new babies (if you are crafty you should try to make one - it's really easy): however, I found it a little awkward to use on older babies (but, I've seen it done). I was surprised to learn that a mai tai could be used on very young babies, you just froggy up their legs - the mai tai is one of my favorite carriers, but all the ones I am mentioning here are a close second. Many carriers have "alternate carries" for infants - like the Ergo has an infant insert (which I wouldn't recommend based on the reviews), but it rocks for 6+ months. You can froggy up their legs, like the mai tai prior to that. The Beco, which is of a similar design to the Ergo with a few more bells and whistles - is a really beautiful carrier that comes in some funky styles - their Butterfly model has an adjustment for infants, but I've never used this carrier (if you go this route - get the one with the infant hood. The infant hood on the Ergo and Beco are super-nice features for younger babies). My baby was 8Ibs at birth and I used the Baby Bjorn (b/c it was the first one that I had) - it worked fine, but I remember thinking that the dangling legs seemed a little unnatural.
Oh, and the best feature is that all of these, with the exception of the Baby Bjorn, allow for breastfeeding...I was never successful trying to nurse while wearing my baby, but it is a great option - especially if the baby is young and nursing frequently.
I just Googled it and the Moby should be fine for babies of any size, even a preemie.
Yes, there is one way to wrap and carry for a baby that is small. I used it with my daughter and she loved it. It sort of cradles them in front of you. As they get older there are other carries... I actually have to break out my instructions, my daughter has pretty much outgrown all the ones I memorized!
You'll be good with the Moby at any size.
I reccomend a woven wrap. Perfect for babies of all sizes and ages. My newborn and my two year old both love it.
