my 4 month old baby girl seems to get the chills. Like you or i might get. This morning there was even a little sound effect to go with it, it was actually pretty darn cute! Anyone else have babies that have done this? Will check with Pedi at 4 month appointment in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if this is a typical thing. She doesn't seem bothered by it a bit!

What can I do next?

My daughter has always given a little shiver (just briefly) after dirtying her diaper (either way). Could this be it?

My now 21 month old daughter has always done this not so much anymore but all the time when she was younger. I read up on it and also asked her pedi and we both came to the conclusion that it happens when she pees. The warm sensation gives her the chills. Her Pedi said that it is fairly common in little girls. Hope this helps. ~H.

Hello,
My son gets the chills as well! He is 5 months old and doesn't seem bothered by it at all........ and he has a sound effect with it. The dr. says that it's probably just an immature nervous system and as long as he doens't seem to get "lost" in the moment and his eyes seem still in focus etc, it should end soon. Let me know though what your dr. says..maybe some different info!

I've both read & heard from my pedi that babies don't regulate their own body temperature very well until six mos. of age. If your baby is shivering, check her extremities to see if they're cold, and most importantly, check her trunk area. If she doesn't seem as warm as you, put on a few extra layers or even better, snuggle up with her skin to skin under some covers to warm her up. Socks and a hat would be good too. Most of their body heat is lost through their head, so a little cap might stop her shivers too. Also, my What to Expect: The First Year book says they should be kept in temps around 62-68 degrees with one layer more than you have on to remain at a comfortable temperature. Hope this helps!

you may want to make sure she is warm enough. babies lack the ability to regulate their temperature fully. Wool and wool / silk items for babies, like those from www.greenmountainorganics.com are the perfect clothing for babies. Wool keeps babies warm and dry. Their little bodies need to put all of their energy into growing, not keeping warm.
be well

My daughter used to get them all the time...daily. I asked the pediatrician and he said she is "getting the chills." It was cute and it just stopped happening around 8 months old.

M.,

Congrats on your baby!

A lot of babies will get what appears as chills or a shiver when they are peeing. Next time this happens check her diaper and see if she just peed.

It's actually pretty cool because if you want to practice Elimination Communication (EC) and your daughter gives such a clear cue when she's peeing it will be easier for you to pick up on when she has to go and get her on a potty!
