Baby Grunting While Asleep

My 4 week old daughter has a terrible time at night sleeping. She is restless and grunts and her arms and legs move all night long. These issues do not persist during the daytime sleeping hours - only at night. She looks very uncomfortable. I believe it may be gas but why only at night ? Any ideas or suggestions - I stay up watching her to make sure she is ok and not spitting up but the nights are getting to be endless

What can I do next?

I would try swaddling but first do a little baby yoga or the bicycle legs to get the gas out. I think you might find it isn't gas but just that she doesnt know what to do with her arms and legs. Swaddle swaddle...

This is definitely normal and nothing to worry about! I was actually laughing when I read your question because when my son was a newborn, he did the same thing and my husband kicked him out of our room at only 6 weeks! I had planned on keeping him in the bassinet until about 2 1/2 to 3 months but it was just keeping us up and my husband couldn't take it. It bothers us more than it bothers them. You could try swaddling like some mamas suggested but I know when I tried that with my son, he wouldn't have it. Dont worry and this will pass and you will laugh about it.

Grunting and moving around are normal. So is spitting up. If she's asleep you should go to bed and sleep too. If she wakes herself up you could try bundling her tightly so that she's not able to move around so much.

If it were gas, she would be in pain and crying. Perhaps I don't understand your question.

If she's asleep, there's nothing to worry about. She may just be going through a light sleep stage and getting herself back to sleep, or she may be dreaming. Who knows what they dream about, but they do go through REM sleep. Marda is right, if she's not crying, she's ok. Many people attribute unexplained movement and crying to gas, when in fact it's just natural, because their nervous systems are still developing, or sometimes they make noise when they want to go to sleep. You should sleep too!

Little ones flail around. They suddenly have too much room! LOL. So, I would echo sentiments already provided and would recommend swaddling.

In addition, I use to do "bicycle pedals" with my little boys feet during the day. This helps move the digestive system along and helps with gas.

Also, at the end of the day, prior to his last day/first night feeding, I would give him a shot of mylacon. Both my children lived on this for about 3 to 4 months. For some reason, they always seemed to get gassier and fussier during the nights. This helped us tremendously.

If things do not improve for you, I'd see your pediatrician.

I would also be sure that whenever Baby is sleeping/resting - day or night - that I lay down too! With my first, my mother practically had to force me to lay down. With my second, I was begging to be allowed to nap! It really is the best advice.

Good luck!

oh no its so annoying, right??? they just do that. it drove me CRAZY bc my son sleeps next to our bed. seriously for the 1st 5 weeks i couldnt sleep unless my son was being watched by someone else. he was soooo loud and i though he was gassy too but its not that. it has something to do with an underdeveloped nervous system. they grow out of it. it takes about 12 weeks, im sorry to say.
i eneded up getting through it by getting ONE earplug. I sleep on my side so the ear that is sticking up gets the plug and the other one is in my pillow.
it blocks the sound enough so you can get some sleep and lets in enough sound so you can wake up if something is wrong.
i also started swaddling him. the other posters are totally right.
get a miracle blanket for now while she's small. when she turns 5 or 6 months, transition her to a woombie. its easier to wean them off of woombies than the miracle blanket.

This is normal. My DD did the same thing. She only started getting better the past few days and she is 7 weeks old. This early on the startle reflex is very strong and they have a hard time dealing with gas. I thought she was going to wake herself up several times, or gas propel herself across the bed :o) but it seemed to bother her a lot less than it bothered me.

It's normal. Try swaddling - there are cute easy swaddlers at target, etc. It helps the babies feel like they're back in the close comfort of the womb, and keeps them from hitting themselves due to the startle reflex. Both of you should sleep better :)

I think grunting is okay and normal, but ask the doc anyway.

She might have a touch of colic........which is normal..........you might watch or keep a journal of what she eats during the day to see if some nights are worse than others, but if she was in real pain, she would be awake and crying......been there.....not fun.

You can also try burping her more before you put her down for the night, that might help with the spit ups......

You need to get some sleep so I hope you are sleeping during her naps......

Take care and hang in there......she'll be fine.
