What do you think of the name "Olive" for a baby girl? Is it cute or crazy?

My husband and I like unique names so I wouldn't do "Olivia" and call her Olive for short. My husand and I really like the name and my mom and best friend love it too. But I'm afraid people will think we're crazy!

What do you think? Please be kind...I'm hormonal!

What can I do next?

People now may not think it is crazy but kids in her classes may tease her for it.

I will give you cudos for being unique.
I named my girl Avielle. Pretty unique. Not in any baby books!

I love the old fashion uniqueness of it.

My dad had an Aunt Olive. And I have always wished that was my Grandmothers name, so I could use it for a daughter.....instead of Betty!

Greetings L.,

Congratulations!

I'm like you. I like unique names, so if you, your husband, your mom and friend love the name Olive, GO FOR IT! Be BOLD. Don't worry about what people think or you will go crazy. However, if you want to take the safe route, you could name her a more conventional name and nick name her Olive.

Much happiness to you and your family whatever decision you make.

Love,
S.

Always think of the nick-names the kids will come up with...I think Olivia is a beautiful name, I would stick to that instead of the nick-name though.

I say go for it. You might find this story funny. My grandmother's name was Olive, but I named my daughter Olivia. I never knew her, as she passed before I was born. I thought naming my daughter Olivia would be a nice way to honor her vs memorializing her. I had always liked the name Olivia anyway(I grew up in Olivia Newton John's time). I had no idea that Olivia would end up on the top ten list when I named her and never even bothered to check those list(she is 2 now). About 6 months ago I met someone through work who has a daughter about the same age and her name is Olive. What's the chance of that? Olive will definitely be a more unique name though. They are dirivitive's of each other so mean the same thing. "Peace".

It is a cute name. It's "unique" w/o being "weird". And don't care what others think...

Olive is a classic name that peaked in popularity in the late 1800s. I say go for it. Don't worry about what the world thinks about the name, everyone has different tastes. Before our baby was born we soon found out that everyone had opinions about names we loved... some were not such nice opinions. We finally decided to stop telling our names and asking for opinions. When our beautiful daughter was born we named her a name no one knew we were considering.... that way her name wasn't sent through the ringer with some people turning up their noses at it. I have since learned that a couple years ago, my daughter's name was the most popular dog name... I don't care. She has the name that we love and her name has become part of her. So if you love Olive, I say go for it. Some people will love it, others will hate it... who cares? Some people are smart and some people are not, you can't be concerned with such things.

Kids will find a way to tease no matter what you do. She will certainly be called Olive Oil but maybe that's not so bad. My maiden name was Chapman and the kids called me Chapstick but it never really bothered me. I have a boys' name as a middle name though and it upset me when the boys on the playground chanted it when I arrived. I still hate that name and only use it on legal documents. It didn't leave any huge emotional scars though. Today there are so many unusual names that I don't know how much difference it makes really.

My grandma's middle name is Olive. It is a very old name. You name your baby what you want, and Olive is not that crazy. People may think so since it is an outdated name, but it is beautiful. Good luck.

I want to respond to all of those saying kids can be cruel. They are cruel no matter what. My grandma was called a stuffed olive all the time. She was not heavy they just said it. And I do not think she will be called olive oil because what kid today even knows that. No matter what you name your child something will come out of it. If is not the first name, it is the last name, if not that, then it is their shape or eye/hair color. Do not over think it. Olive is great and you should stick to what you like, not what strangers say.

Olive is a lovely name. People will not think you're crazy. It is actually a woman's name. It's sweetly old-fashioned, in keeping with a growing trend in unique names drawn from the past.

Congratulations and good luck!

Congrats on your new little one. I personally like the name Olive. However, I have a 6 year old, in first grade and I forgot how cruel kids could be.I would be a little leary of names that are to different for that reason. He has girls named Lexus and Harleigh in his class and kids tease them. At that age, thats a tough thing to handle. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Hi L.,

Congratulations!!! In the end it's your choice. But remember, the choice you make is something your child has to live with. Will they think it's cute as they get older? Or when they are 18, will they want to legally change it. I wouldn't worry about kids teasing. Kids will find a way to tease if they want to period.

I had a friend who was picking out girls names and she really like Amya (A-MY-A), problem was her last name was Trout. Get it? Thank goodness she had a boy!!

I always say. If the name looks good on the outside of an executives door, than go for it :)

Good Luck!

Congrats on your little girl!!

I just wanted to say DO IT!! Don't listen to what everyone else says , if you like the name, you should name her Olive. I really love the older names, we named our daughter Madelyn last year. If you worry about kids picking on her, just teach her to be a strong and confident girl, and she will be able to tell those little kids what she thinks about them messing with her or maybe it won't phase her at all!!

Good luck, I know you will be busy but try and let us know what you decide in the "what happend" box :-)
