Baby Not Sleeping Since Taking Amoxicillin

Has anyone else ever had the problem where their baby wakes up in the middle of the night for 3-4 hours and is wide awake when taking amoxicillin? I had her down to a routine of sleeping throughout the night and then she got an ear infection and I have been giving her this. Any advice would be helpful.

What can I do next?

It's probably not the Amoxicillin as much as the discomfort of the ear infection. My daughter doesn't sleep normally when she is sick either. Wait until a few days after she finishes the medicine and see if she goes back to her normal sleep pattern. You may have to work on getting back to a regular schedule for a day or two, but it should all level out quickly.

I have heard of a similar situation! A 1 1/2 year old girl that my son (same age) plays with was recently on amoxicillin for ear infection. She would wake up at night screaming. She was diagnosed with night terrors due to the amoxicillin. She was taken off of it and given another medication; problem solved.

Incidentally, my son also had problems with amoxicillin. The first time he took it, in April, he started vomiting. On the advice of a nurse friend, we made sure he only took it on a full stomach. He finished out his supply with no more problems. Then in May it was prescribed for his second ear infection. We went on vacation. His fifth day on the amoxicillin he broke out in hives. We saw a dr. who stated it was the amox. and said we should take him off of it, which we did immediately. We were told the hives would go away in 3-4 days. However the hives did not go away; instead they got worse. Three days later we saw another dr. who confirmed it was the amox. and started our son on steroid treatment and antihistamine. Slowly the hives went away. Needless to say our son will not be taking amox. or any other form of penicillin ever again.

I would say trust your intuition on this and other issues you encounter as a parent. I am sure that is what led you to ask this question and I suspect you are right on target!

It is probably the pain of the ear infection when she lays down not the amoxicillin - if she doesn't get better after your done with the antibiotic you should take her back in to the doctor and make sure the ear infection has cleared up - sometimes you need a stronger antibiotic to get rid of an ear infection.

Hi there,
My 10 month old baby boy is getting tubes in his ears on June 15, he is on ear infection #11. With every ear infection he wakes up during the middle of night, thats how I actually know something is wrong with him. He sleeps from 9:00 till 7:00-7:30 every night with out wakeing up except for when he has ear infections. His doctor says it because when he is laying down his ear hurts more. He has been on so many different antibotics and he still does this.

Try giving her some Tylenol or Motrin. It could be pain, even if she isn't crying she may still be uncomfortable. I would ask the Pharmacist about the Amoxicillin. It may have a side effect of restlessness or sleeplessness. I always ask the Pharmacist about medicines, they know everything about them.

It's probably not the amoxicillin, but instead the ear pain keeping her up. When kids have an ear infection, it hurts worse when they lie down. So some wake up and want to stay up. Hope this helps.

It may be the ear infection, not the antibiotic. Two of my three kids had ear troubles as babies and neither of them slept well during one. After an incredibly good sleeper for the first child, the second two didn't sleep well until after they got tubes. I've read that even older children with fluid in their ears cannot sleep through the night. With my third child, I knew immediately that she had an infection as soon as she would quit sleeping through the night. I hope you get your ZZZZZZZZZZZZ's soon (and her too)!

I seriously doubt that it's the antibiotics keeping her awake, i've never heard of that particular side-effect and both of my kids took it nicely, more than likely it's the pain in her ear that's waking her up and throwing her off scheduel. Check with your pediatrician about what to give her for pain like children's tylenol. once the infection is gone it's more than likely that you will be able to get her back of schedule

We seem to be having the same problem. We are pretty sure that it is not the ear ache. (Never had one) She started taking the amox for a secondary infection causing her to have a runny nose and a fever. What do they add to the Amox to make it taste so sweet? Could that be what is causing my 6 month old to stay up and wake up all night long?

could be the pain of the ear infection not the amoxi...i assume they gave you ear drops also, but they wear off. Or, maybe the amoxi is upsetting her stomache? I know it does mine if i dont eat enough with it.
