Try a little water, maybe 1/2 oz w/ nothing in it at first. If that doesn't work try Karo syrup in the water. If that doesn't work they make infant suppositories. Or you can do it the old fashined way...thermometer up the butt always works!
Hello, My daughter is 7 weeks old and is having trouble moving her bowels. We have been to doctors a few times, she was put on lactulose, changed formula and increased lactulose and nothing seems to be working. She pushes and pushes with no results. Poor baby even has broken blood vessel in her eye from pushing. She has started crying when she is pushing and has been pretty fussy lately. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what they did. Thanks.

my son had a lot of problems. I used the thermometer with vaseline some times.. but at age 4 weeks I started to give him a small amt. of first stage prunes.. it worked like a gem. I know that sounds young to give him prunes.. but it really helped. he is now 12 and still has problems like every 3 or 4 months.. so he now drinks prune juice if he can't go. nothing else really worked. good luck. I would give him a small amt. after each bottle. also the dr. told me not to use powder formula used premixed.. and don't use iron formula. the premixed soy did the trick too.
If the prune juice suggestion doesn't work (it didn't for us) - my doctor said to use the tip of a rectal thermometer, cover it w/ vaseline and "massage" the anus with it in circular motions for 2-3 minutes. Dont stick it in too far ... do about the same as when you would measure the temperature, but put some pressure on the top, bottom, and side walls. Worked like a charm.
Are you breastfeeding? Constipation rarely happens to exclusively breastfed babies so if I were you, I would stop giving any formula and just breastfeed. Formula is a poor substitute for breast milk and so often babies on formula end up with digestive problems like this. They are also sick more often and generally less healthy than breastfed babies. Since your baby is still very young it's not too late. You should contact a lactation consultant (your pediatrician can give you a recommendation) and often this is reimbursed by insurance so you may not even have to pay (or only pay a small amount).
My first son began to go about every 3-4 days when he was about that age and that is normal for breastfed babies. I did give him water once a day - only 4 oz usually flavored with a little apple juice. The doctor was not conerned in our situation, but it concerned me because he would ____@____.com my 2nd son has renal reflux so if his poo would stay there longer that 24 hrs he would be more likely to get a urinary tract infection. HE fortunately has been a very regualr guy, but I have given a glycerin enema a few times. I found these premade ampules for kids that are already lubricated and gave him about half. In the NICU our standard dose for glycerin enema is 0.2ml for the preterm and term neonates. If you wanted to try you could ask your doctor how much, but I would probably give my 7 week old around 0.5ml. Or a chip of a suppository. Sometimes with the babies @ work, they need glycerin to help then for several times in a row (usually no stool in 2 days, but then they regulate themselves.
I do know of many kids, that always have this issue no matter what they do.
I had the same problem with my son and even went and saw a GI doc. Try prune juice. Give your baby 2 ounces (mixed with formula) one time per day. That should help. We skipped rice cereal all together because it is binding. A lot of my son's constipation went away once he started with fruits. He's now one and has no problem.........
My daughter had some gas issues when she was a newborn (6mo now)...We used colic calm to help settle her tummy and one of the effects was that it helped make her poops a little more watery and she seemed to push/struggle less when going.....The poops were black which the company said would happen. The colic calm is all natural and really worked to help her with any tummy/gas/straining to go issues. Look it up on line. Good luck.
My son had the same thing. The ped. told us to put a little prune juice in with his bottles. Trust me when I say only put a little in it. It did the trick though. Hope this helps.
Take her to a pediatric GI to be on the safe side.
Hi T.,
I had this problem with my twins at the same age. The doctor recommended boiling some water with light corn syrup and putting that in their bottles. Essentially it was sugar water. I don't know why, but it worked. I dont remember the exact amounts and how many times a day, but you could google it. Good Luck.

ask your doc if you can give her a little prune juice. That might help loosen her bowels.
I also did prune juice too at that age. My pedi was not happy, but my son and I were because it worked! But we have no history of food allergies in our family so I felt ok taking the chance. My sister also tried brown sugar in 2 oz of water and that worked for her dtr. I tried that too, but didn't want my son to always think that water would be sweet and not like water so I went to the prune juice instead, plus it worked better.
Hi T.,
My daughter had acid reflux and we were told to put cereal in her bottle to help her keep the food down. Because of the cereal she got constipated. We gave her a little prune juice every day or every other day and that helped her go. You can also do white grape juice. I know some people thought she was too young (she started doing this at about 5 weeks old) but the doctor said it was ok. I hope this helps.
breast feeding her is usually best ur milk helps move her bowels honestly u should consider even pumping if its too much or u work breast milk will loosen, it works
Hi,
My baby brother suffered with constipation for years, pretty much like what you describe. Turns out he had a twisted colon. Never needed surgery, though. You should have them do some sort of X-ray, that's how we found out. I know it's awful to watch them strain like that.
Sorry for late response, my son had some problems with this and my Ped said to try Kyro syrup (yup same thing you cook with) in the bottle. At the time he was drinking 4oz and I would put in 1/2 teaspoon. This helped him go w/ no problems, I still use this when i notice him having problems at 8 months.
good luck!

Hi T.
My daughter had the same problem. She was on Lactose free formula. I would mix her formula ( full can) with 2 oz of prune juice. This way she was getting a little prune juice with every bottle and it really helped her. After a while I would lessen it until I was able to wean her off the prune juice and she was able to move her bowels on her own. Hope it helps.

My son had the same issue from 9 weeks - 12 weeks. He was only going every 4 days. We put prune juice into his formula or breastmilk. We put about 1 tbs per 2 oz formula. You should check with the doctor first but it worked for us. It took about 24 hours after we gave him prune juice. good luck!
My pedi had told me prune juice. Just a capful in her bottle of 8oz. It worked.
There are laxatives for babies. You can ask your doctor if it is okay to use.
Try diluted prune juice. I know she is young but if she is in that much pain then I would do it. Also diluted karo syrup can help. Do you do plain water as well in between feedings? I know the prune juice worked for my kids like a charm. I would give it a try first thing in the morning this way maybe my night time it will work. I wouldn't do it before bed you may have an awful night of gas or her trying to go all night. Good luck!!
