Baby Won't Eat/swallow Liquid Vitamin Supplement

My baby is the best eater ever and has always taken his iron supplement just fine. I would usually just give it to him right out of the dropper before dinner. Now all of a sudden he just spits it back out, it leaks out of his mouth and down all over his bib and clothes, and that stuff stinks and stains! I'm afraid to put it in his food because then his food will taste funny, it's pretty potent stuff. I don't want him to equate mealtime with yuckiness! Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry, baby is 8 months old. Yes, the doc recommended them. It's the Tri-Vi-Sol brand, which he also recommended.

I always gave that stuff to my kids in the tub. It was less messy that way and not associated with meal time at all. With my daughter we went through every variety of vitamin the doctor could think of. She would not take it. She spit it out. Then started to vomit when I gave it to her. (I can't blamer her, have you ever smelled that stuff???) I finally gave up and her pedi agreed it was not worth the fight, especially since she ate a well balanced diet.

I used Shaklee's multivitamin & multimineral powder for my kids. U can mix it with water, juice and food. Has a great flavor. It contains all vitamines they need, plus prebiotcs which improves digestion and immune health. Its safe. Does not contain any added artificial colors, sweeteners, flavors, or preservatives. Ans it's gluten free! Now that they are over 2 I give them the chewable multivitamin from Shaklee. Its a treat for them.
U can get it through any Shaklee distributor, or order it yourself at www.malkyj.myshaklee.com

We used the same brand. Try putting it at the back of his mouth, so he has a less chance of spitting it out (and tastes it less hopefully). We also mixed it in with herbal tea (camomile or fennel) and gave in a small bottle with nipple, which he liked (I know, weird :-)
A side note: My son got stains on his teeth from the iron supplement. You may want to make sure you wipe his teeth with a damp washcloth after giving him the supplement.

You might want to consider purchasing some iron-fortified powdered formula (like Enfamil) and mixing it into his dry baby cereal before you add breastmilk.

Are we talking about a baby or like a two year old. I practiced pill swallowing with my son. We used those little red hot candies.

Am assuming your doc thinks baby needs iron? There are powdered vitamins that might taste better could be put in juice or milk. The multi-mineral/vitamin powder I am thinking of has 5 mg of iron.

Those liquid vitamins are NASTYYY!! You can TRY putting them in water or juice or milk... but that didn't work with my kids... neither did mixing it with applesauce or rice cereal. Does your baby have teeth yet? (My son had a full mouth of teeth at 5 months, that's why I ask)... anyway, as soon as he got a grip on chewing, I gave him chewable children's vitamins (started with 1/2 of one, then moved him up to a full one)... don't worry if baby doesn't get any vitamins between stopping the liquid and starting a chewable, it will be okay :)

I always mixed it with my daughters baby food. I would put it on one side so that I new she was getting it all. I never had a problem mixing it. I tried it once on its own and it is nasty. But mixed with the baby food it wasn't that bad. And she would take it all. Once she got older and we did it straight from the dropper she would spit it out. We tried the chewables when she was about 1 1/2 and she wouldn't take that either. So since then we have been using the Flintstones gummys. She takes it everyday. She is 3 1/2 now and she tells me that she needs her vitamin.
But try mixing it and see what happens. Good Luck!

If his main source of food is breastmilk or formula... vitamins are not even really necessary unless he has a genetic issue with vitamin deficiency.

I'd stop the vitamins.

I would definetely tell you to put the powder in his food or liquid in is bottles. I found it being really helpful many times!

Additionally, why don't you try other brands of vitamins? Maybe other ones taste better?

Unless he has health issues, and even sometimes then, you really don't need the vitamins. Sometimes applesauce can help. The ones without iron are less offensive. You might check with your doctor, but he may be able to do a half of the Flintstones First Vitamins. We did that for a while for our youngest -- but only because he was severely anemic. Even then, the doctors were split on whether or not vitamins were really needed. If your son doesn't want to eat them, I'd say skip it.

They taste like poo, your child has just figured out how to not put himself through it anymore. I think he is hoping you get the idea.

Really once they know how to keep it out sneaking it into food is the only way. Some stuff taste so god awful you can't hide it in anything. This would be one of them.
