Well it wasn't a birthday cake but for Christmas Brunch I made a gingerbread raspberry trifle: layers of gingerbread cake, fresh whipped cream, vanilla pudding with rum and eggnog, fresh raspberries and shaved chocolate on top.

Hi gals, I made a home made Angel Food Cake with real hand whipped (OK, the electric mixer did it) Whipped Cream Vanilla Icing and served it with fresh berries for my daughters birthday party this weekend. I made two for fun, one round, one square. 8 girls ate it all. They had 2nds and 3rds. One girl's mom is quite a baker and the daughter raved to her mom how great the cake was and how many slices she ate. The mom asked for my recipe, which of course I shared, as west coast people do, as compared to east coast recipe snobs...he, he (joke).
What is the best birthday cake you have eaten yourself, or served to others with such rave reviews?
The other home made birthday cake I have enjoyed over the years is a Harvey Wallbanger Cake. I can't stand Red Velvet Cakes, even though they are being forced upon us the last couple of years.
I just followed this recipe: http://www.food.com/recipe/angel-food-cake-homemade-12591
Step 15 is the most important....you must COOL COMPLETELY. Do not hurry this part, or the cake splits
And I followed this for the icing: http://www.finecooking.com/recipes/vanilla-whipped-cream-...
InMy30's...your cake is exactly what I used to do for years, but I started getting reflux from it and figured out it was from all the unhealthy preservatives and additives in the cool whip and boxed cake. So I switched to regular whipped cream. I also ate 2 pieces of this cake and it did not upset my stomach.
Julie, did you really lose the recipe, or is that your cover for not wanting to share it?

Is there such a thing as *bad* cake? lol
Have you tried a 123 cake? It's not in the running for best cake for sure, but it's easy and super quick. Just mix a boxed angel food cake mix with any flavor cake mix that you like. I keep it in a gallon freezer bag. Then when you want cake you mix 1 tblsp mix with 2 tblsp water in a mug and microwave for 3 minutes. Quick easy desert! I've used juice instead of water a few times (orange juice with chocolate cake) and it's good, too.
Can you share the recipe with an east coast girl? :)
I make pound cakes. My lemon sour cream one gets compliments all the time.
I made my sister a cake a few years back and since then I get SO many requests for it, it's not even funny and it has just spread word of mouth to all her friends, I must make this cake 6x a year at least...and it's a VERY simple cake!
I bake a plain white cake, I usually get the Blue Box cake mix and then I make the 'frosting' by adding 1 container of strawberry yogurt to 1 container of cool whip. I add a layer of frosting in between the 2 layers of cake and then add a layer of sliced fresh strawberries on top of the frosting. Add second layer of cake on top and then frost the whole thing with the remaining frosting. That's it. Super simple.
It is amazingly light and fresh tasting and is a crowd pleaser, for sure!
~I love angel food cake, yours sounds delish!
I always requested my mom make an Angel Food Cake for my birthday. I remember one year I really wanted purple frosting and she delivered! Unfortunately, these days, none of my friends care for Angel Food Cake, even though it has about 1/2 the calories of regular cake.
I make a killer chocolate cake with buttermilk in the batter and in the frosting that everyone always requests. I like to make it because it is super-easy. Also, the frosting is basically fudge. Yum!
I also have a soft spot for box cake, though too many artificial ingredients for my liking.
I made a similar cake for my daughter's birthday a few years ago. She wanted Care Bears and I convinced her it looked like a cloud and we put the figurines on top. It was really good! I don't make a lot of cakes and we seem to be going more toward birthday pie rather than cake. I make an awesome pie.
Thanks for sharing - I love cake and your recipes look delicious - I will definitely try them both. My favorite cake recipe is on All Recipes - Perfumed coconut cake - it is fabulous - I usually serve it with Easter dinner and decorate it with festive colors. I also love Watergate cake - I found a great recipe for that also on All Recipes (my go to site b/c I love reading the reviews first) - it used a white cake mix, pistachio pudding, and 7-up with a pistachio pudding and whip cream icing. Everyone loved it!! I share your dislike for anything red velvet - it does seem to be trendy the past few years. I wish I could quit my job and learn how to create beautiful cakes for living - especially wedding cakes!!
yea i agree share the recipe=)
my favorite is a bostom cream cake with that custard filling or strawberry shortcake but emmy is allergic to strawberries so i havent had that in forever
Last summer I made my mom a mint chocolate chip cake, with three layers of cake, cookies and ice cream. I put expensive mints from Fannie Mae on top. I make a lot of cakes. Everyone really loved this one.
It's too bad I lost the recipe!
Something you can't stand, Red Velvet with White Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Icing. I get requests for it.
omg, just reading the descrips in these responses is making me desperate for cake!
my future DIL made cupcakes a couple of months ago, dark chocolate with a fluffly peanut butter frosting. i was making inarticulate bliss noises.
