Best Place to Get Ears Pierced

DD is turning 5 in a week and daddy has promised to get her ears pierced. I know she hates shots and is usually very sensitive. My mother has suggested taking her somewhere that will do both ears at the same time. She will know how much it hurts once the first one is done. I would also like to go somewhere that is used to little one. I talked to the ladies at WalMart today, and they were not real friendly. I've read some reviews to avoid Clairs, but that is where I went years ago. Anywhere else I could try? Do they ever do both ears at once.
DD has been begging us to do it, not the other way around. I hardly ever wear mine anymore, so she certainly is not getting the pressure from me! I think she sees it on other and thinks it is pretty.

So What Happened?

We went to Piercing Pagoda (?). They say they are well trained. It ended up being a kios and not an actual store. Not real pleased w/the suggested ear rings. They are princess crowns and snag on stuff. Woke up cring in the middle of the night because she was stuck to her blanket. May be put band aids on them at night, super careful in the day....

Good luck!

I'm with Bee's Mom... a good tattoo shop is the ABSOLUTE best place for piercings. They're trained, licensed, monitored by the health dept., CLEAN, and they ***know what they're doing***. A piercer is a piercer... this is what they do all day, every day. They specialize in it, and they're good at it. The holes will be matched, even (as in not tilting one way or another), quickly & professionally done. Their needles are also much sharper than the ones that are used in guns, so they hurt a great deal less. They will also be extremely knowledgeable in after care, and they are paid well for their time and skill. All of this as opposed to the random minimum wage gun piercer that you find in shops/malls/stores who knows how to use a marker and pull a trigger. Find the best tattoo shop in your area, and you will also find the best piercer.

I hope I do not offend you when I say this, but if you daughter is too scared of the pain then maybe she is not ready to have her ears pierced. You could try to tell her that if she wants her ears pierced then she has to be ready for it to hurt a little and be a big girl about it. If she won't, don't force her. But if she wants this badly enough, she'll find the courage to do it. She'll have the rest of her life to have her ears pierced, so if she's not ready, why not just wait a year or two?

I think most pediatricians pierce ears now. I would check there.

We went to our pediatrician's office and they did both ears at the same time of course and they are very used to doing this to kids/babies. They tell you actually not to take them anywhere else. That's who I would recommend, and none of those places that do adults and don't care if you're hurting or not. They are not "professionals".

i would suggest a pediatricians office as well, if not there, then a professional piercing shop. never ever ever let someone use piercing 'guns' - theyre so awful! cant be fully sanitized, and they dont really pierce.. it rips the skin. it also takes longer for the piercings to heal, since the jewelry gets put on so tightly. theres get two weeks "training" involved with learning to use one and none of that has to do with nerve endings and proper piercing.

I would ask your pediatrician. I just took my son in for his 3 yr check up and noticed a sign about ear piercing saying to ask them about getting it done.

Check with your pediatrician-I personally think it is probably safer there-that is where we will go when and if she wants them done L.:)

I took both my girls to Clairs and they did a great job. They wore gloves had everything sterilized. They also had me look at the marks on my girls ears before they pierced them to make sure it was right where I wanted it. They also can do it at the same time so that made it really easy for my 3 year old. They gave her a teddy bear to hold and a sucker once it was done. I was very pleased and both my girls haven't had any problems with their ears (we did it about a year ago). If you don't want to go there then the only other place I would say is a tattoo shop. They do all kinds of piercings there. They are very experienced and are very good with sterilization. The only problem is the atmosphere could be a little scary for a kid. And it will cost a lot more to get it done there.

Piercing Pagoda! Please go there. I was a manager there for several years. Their training is twice as long as Claires. You can call ahead and almost every Saturday there will be two people available and can do both ears at the same time. That really is helpful for child and parent. Please do not get pierced at Wal-mart. There earings are good prices but their training consists of a pamplet. You are guaranteed at PP that they will not pierce your child unless they have had over 20 supervised piercings. No other retailer does that. As for your pediatrician...good luck getting even and straight holes. Do yourself a favor, only do it once, get it straight the first time. Most of the repierces I did on kids were from their doctors. They give shots, not earrings. Good luck!

I think Clair's is the only place that does it anymore. And I think if you maybe call ahead they could do them both at the same time.
I know when I got my ears pierced, a kazillion years ago, my mom took me to the best jeweler in town. When my daughter got hers done 4-5 years ago, I called around and no one did it but Clair's and Walmart.

I will also suggest LaLobe! My mom and I both got ours done there. But to be honest, I just took my daughter there on Thursday for her 5th bday.. she has been asking FOREVER to get it done. Once she was in the seat and he tried to put the clip in her hair GAME OVER.... she no longer wants it done anymore. He said that at 5 they either REALLY want it done or don't... there is no in between. I told her exactly how they did it to prepare her and she was fine. She told me that she will tell me when she is really ready to have it done. 5 is a hit or miss with piercings. They have learned that needles cause pain and would rather not have it done because they think it will hurt to bad. Which is exactly what my daughter told me. Good luck... hope it all turns out the way you want it to!

When I was in middle school, my parents took me to a Jewelry store.
It was fine. Later, I just did my own ear piercing! Alcohol and antibiotic cream. Sterilized my sharpened earring posts. That's it. I got no infections.
And yes, good licensed Tattoo shops are also a good option.

Make sure, your daughter is really wanting it.... she already hates shots?

As she is getting the piercing... bring a harmonica with you or a Kazoo.... have her or you count to 3 or whatever number... then on the agreed number... have your girl start BLOWING away on the instrument... and right at THAT moment... have the person pierce/do her ears RIGHT AT THAT MOMENT.
That is what I suggest.
It helps with shots too, at the Doctor.

Good luck,
Susan

We pierced my 12yr old daughters at 2 and did Claires, they did not do both at the same time. We are looking to do our younger daughters who's turning 2 at the end of summer. I think we are going to use Sweet and Sassy for her. They people that work there seem to be use to the younger girls. Good Luck!

At Claire's, you might get a teenager who's only been trained for a week. Yes, the dots they put on the ears might look even, but what if the gun is aimed in at a different angle. One earring would point further out and the other further in. That's what happened to my daughter when she pierced her ears. It bugs me to this day to look at her slightly uneven earrings. If you read "The Hurried Child" by Dr. David Elkind, you might decide to wait until she's older and let her decide when to get the piercings. In today's world, we rush our kids through so many milestones. Moms are rushing their boys through their Eagle Scout projects at age 12, and doing most of the work for them. It would mean so much more if the boy waited until his junior or senior year of high school and did ALL the work himself - organizing the fundraising, and volunteer labor, etc. The boy could then look back with pride because he had ownership of the project - - EARNERship.

I let my daughter pierce her ears when SHE decided to do it. She was 18 years old. The earrings were a high school graduation gift from a friend. Oprah Winfrey pierced hers for her 50th b-day.

I say either Claire's or the Piercing Pagoda (if you have one near you). I have had mine done both places and both places were excellent. I would definitely call to find out if they will do both at the same though, because most places only have one person on staff. I would also suggest calling the doctor's office as some offices will do it for you. I got mine done for the first time at 5 too, and it was such a big deal! Congratulations!

My sister and I, many years ago, had our ears pierced at a Jeweler. There really were no other places back then. I had my daughter's done at Claire's with surgical steel, they marked her ears to make sure I was happy with the placement and did both at once. They were really sweet to her.
I personally would go with surgical steel because I am sensitive to gold and the different things they may add to it such as nickel.
Just search around in advance for the most accomodating place so that it's a happy experience for her. My parents made me wait until my 10th birthday and I just couldn't get over how fabulous I felt after waiting all those years. If you get the right gals, it's all done and over before they even know it, which I found was best for my daughter.

Best wishes!
