I've seen it done at Claire's but not actually participated, I got mine at Walmart b/c at the time, that was the only place I knew of except at a local jewelry store or at the doctor's office. I don't think Claire's is any different than Walmart or Piercing Pagoda IMO, they just probably don't do them as often as Walmart but I guess it depends on the area demand at Claire's -vs- Walmart.
I got mine done at Walmart twice & they were fine. W/a gun, quick & simple, they give you after care instructions, the earrings are in a sterile package, not touched by human hands, believe me, I've used them to pierce with so I do know, my fingers never touched the earrings & they'll use new, sterile gloves so their fingers won't touch them either. The earrings are special earrings just for piercing, VERY sharp & pointy so they go right through quick as butter.
Not too keen on the needle idea, for one thing, where would you get it done w/a needle? A piercing shop is the only place I know of that uses them. Not sure if I'd want to take a young child in one & I don't think anyone under 14 is allowed if I heard right. Plus, they probably will use the 'hollow' needles, not sure which type they may use, but the hollow needles remove the skin, making a permanent hole, like a belly button piercing for example, which means if she changed her mind later, it'd never close up...plus I'm not sure what size needle they'd use...what if the hole is bigger than normal earrings? Plus it takes more time I'd think having to probably wait in line, them getting a newly packaged needle or two out plus the earrings, cork, forceps, & probably iodine to sanitize, etc they'd use to pierce with. Then they clamp on the forceps, double, triple, quadruple checking to make sure they're "in the right spot" then they poke the needle through half-way then they attach the special earrings to the needle butt & pull it/work it through, then detach the clamps...to me that's a lot of time & trouble for a young child, especially when the gun does the same job but a lot faster IMO.
Depending on the gun, whether it's pre-loaded or not, they put on the gloves, swab the ears, mark the place w/the pen, place the earrings in the gun if needed, aim then squeeze, boom your done. The Claire's in my area at the time, used the one-time only, single-use "pre-loaded" gun w/the earrings already in the gun, like they sell at Sally's, but the action is the same, gloves, swab, mark, aim & squeeze, boom, done & the gun is then discarded so each time, a new gun is used which I think is even better.
You can always look on YouTube & see the ear piercing videos done w/the needle & see what's involved -vs- the gun then make your decision. To me, I'd go w/the tried & true quick method w/the gun that's been done for many decades, in a safe, quick way, & relaxed environment...aka Claire's, Piercing Pagoda or Walmart. I really don't see anything wrong w/them. People use them all the time. Both store's probably cost considerably less than a professional piercer or doctor might charge. The employees are required to wear clean, sterile, new rubber gloves, use alcohol pads to swab the area & sanitize it before piercing. I have yet to hear any complaints about either store as far as piercing goes. I know I didn't have any trouble w/mine. But again, this is just my opinion.
There's also an alternative if you just can't decide...if there's a Sally's beauty supply in your area, why don't you just go by there & purchase the do-it-yourself piercers? They cost about the same as it would getting them pierced in a store & you can have that special moment between you & your daughter & you can make sure they get in the right spot. I've used them to re-pierce my mom's ears after she let them 'grow closed' & she didn't have any problems w/them at all. Just be sure to get some sterile gloves or else wash your hands thoroughly w/antibacterial soap & use alcohol to cleanse the area then use q-tip to dip into alcohol & swab around the earrings, front & back, for extra measure, that's what I did.
My cousin, on the other hand, the most recent time, used Piercing Pagoda at the mall when we went shopping together one day & it was fine. Just remember, no matter where you go, there will be redness, swelling & some pain associated w/the piercing. After all, you are causing 'injury' to the body so that's the normal reaction. I was also told this beforehand so I'd know what to expect & yes, mine got red, swelled up a bit & ears were sore for a day or so but was fine after that. I'm not sure where the poster who posted opposing the gun got the idea that piercing guns use brunt force to force a "blunt object" through the ear & is not sterile, that's simply not true, the earrings are special earrings that, again, are sharp & pointy & the earrings are in a sterile casing as well as the employees using sterile gloves. The amount of 'force' used is, I think, is about the same or a tad less than the amount of 'force' you'd use to squeeze a stapler to staple papers. I know when I used the piercing guns, I didn't hafta squeeze very hard. Hope this helps, good luck.
