I am looking for ideas for my daughters' birthday party this year. We are having a joint party for my 1 year old and 5 year old, but do not want any gifts. We would like to suggest a donation of some sort in lieu of gifts, so my daughters can learn to give to those in need. Any suggestions?

Hi there A..
Not too long ago i asked for advice for birthday ideas too. One response i got was from a women that told me about a State Park that offers free shelter rentals if you (and your party) donate time caring for the animals at the petting zoo it offered, like feeding and so. if you are interested let me know and i'll forward on the info.
best of luck.

You could ask for donations to go to your kids collage fund, or a scholarship or education charity and use the theme of ABC’s, school busses, graduation stuff, etc.
You could ask for donations to the breast cancer fund and do everything in pink
You could us one of the dogs or cat themed parties and ask for donations to a humane society or animal shelter

If you feel it is ok for your kids to still get something to open (many people like to give gifts because they enjoy watching the excitement of the kids opening the gifts, you could request only books and donations as gifts – keep the books or find a local or school library to donate to, but the kids then have something to open.
Animal shelters often request and need items that could be given as gifts, opened, and they taken to the location by you and your kids: http://animalshelter.co.franklin.oh.us/geninfo/helpinghan...

How does your family feel about animals? The Franklin county shelter on Alum Creek Dr, is always in need of funds. You could even plan a day that your party goers volunteer to walk to dogs etc. Hope this helps, F.

I would recommend having people bring small items like movies, teddy bears, ect... so you can actually take your children to Childrens and they can give themselves. I think that when we try to show our children the importance of giving, it must be something they experience first hand by giving whatever donation they can themselves. I know how my son felt when he supplied hats and gloves for his school!!! He won 50$ from a fundraiser in kindergarden and walmart matched his money. He bought about 30 hats and gloves each. It was a wonderful experience. Hope this helps.

Hi A.,
I'm in Gahanna, too. There is a really sweet place called Libby loos at Easton. You pick packages for the kids and then depending on the package they get made up to be rock stars or princesses, etc. I think the packages start at 20 per person and go up from there. Included is the makeover and 4 or 5 items from the floor. Not exactly sure about it all. It's all by word of mouth. I've been in the store to see what it's like. It's ind of cramped, good for about 3 or 4 girls to get made up.
Also in Dublin there is a place called sports ohio that you can rent out for about $200 or $300 they get to do the stuff they have there. A girl friend of mine just had a party there for her 5 year old daughter, she also has 2 sons, 2 and 9, they all loved it!

In the invitations you could write a small note about the donation in stead of gifts. (have your daughter deside where she would like the money to go before you write it.) When turning in the donation make sure her name is the one that is recognised!:-)

that is a wonderful idea!!!!! hope this helps
A.

One year a friend of mine asked everyone to bring a children's book and she donated them to her church library.
