My son had this happe with two of his teeth. I believe it is called a hematoma. My doctor said it is just one of those things some babies get. He was not concerned at all.

My 14 month old has gotten his bottom first molars. The place where he should get his top left molar is swollen and a bluish purple color. Is that normal? Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

Unfortunately, yes it is normal. They are the beginnings of blood blisters. His teeth are comming in fast and it is causes this. It is more painful than when they come in slow. My children liked it when I took a wash cloth, wet it and put it in the freezer for a while.
Hint: fold it or lay it in the shape that he will like to chew on it. I didn't leave mine till tey were hard but they were a little stiff. It really helps a lot!!!!
I am not sure about the bluish purple color, but if he is hurting real bad they have the teething tablets and you can give 2 to 4 tablets. It is MUCH better than the oragel.
My son's looked exactly the same when his molars were about to break through. His doctor said it was just trapped blood making it look like that and that when the molar came all the way through it would be fine.
My sons gums have been a blueish-purple color and a little swollen right before most of his teeth cut through. My mother-in-law says it is just a little bruising from the tooth cutting through the gums. If there is a lot of swelling you might want to get it checked out, but it is probably normal.

That is how my son's looked just before the tooth broke through the skin.
Keep an eye on it though!
Good Luck,

I cannot give any advice on this matter because i've been wondering the same thing. i have a son who's almost 14 mos and he has cut his first molar within the last week or so on the top left but the top right gum has this bluish purple soft lump. it doesn't bother him when i rub over it other than him being aggravated at my fingers in his mouth, so i haven't worried about too much. i have been keeping an eye on it. i'm anxious to see if anyone knows what this is. thanks for posting the question - i never thought about asking it on mamasource.
ok first what is SAHM? 2nd, you need to get that check out, my daughter has her back teeth coming in and although yes there is some swelling, they are still their natural color pink. He may have gotten an infection or something back in his teeth causing an irritation. Definatly get that checked out.
