Bringing Baby to Ob/gyn

I have my pap scheduled for tomorrow. I have an-almost-4-month-old baby. I could leave him with my husband, but he is exclusively breastfed and will NOT take a bottle. Depending on how busy the drs office is tomorrow, I could be in and out or there for awhile. Its not fair to the baby or my husband to leave them for an extended amount of time.

I really dont want to bring my husband with me b/c then I'll have to bring the two older kids.

Baby doesnt like his stroller at all, besides the exam rooms are far from spacious. Getting a stroller in and out would be a pain. We mostly use our sling when we are out and about. We dont use an infant carrier, so thats not an option.

How do other moms handle bringing their babies to the ob/gyn? Does somebody hold your baby while you are being examined? Or can I just lay him down with me?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Everything went well. I brought him. I held him during the question and answer time. And then the doc offered a nurse to hold him, or he could stay with me. I opted to have a nurse hold him.

To clarify the car seat situation, weI only used the infant carrier/carseat for the first 4-6 weeks of life for all my kids. We use Britax convertible car seats. Rear facing until the appropriate age/weight and then forward facing. II like getting them up and awake while I am out and about instead of just sleeping all the time in their carseat. I have found it helps them sleep better at naptime and bedtime.

Thanks for all your responses!

When my daughter was an infant and we didn't have a nanny, I brought her with me to my GYN for follow up visits. What do you do for other appointments? I assume you don't bring her to the dentist or hairdresser b/c those are longer (and for hair, lots of sprays and stuff). But GYN is usually quick once you are in the exam room...

What kind of carseat is he in? You say you don't use an infant carrier, but I can't recall seeing an infant carseat that isn't a carrier. I would take him in that and keep him in it. Babies usually feel pretty snug and comfortable in them. Every baby I've ever seen in the OB/GYNs office -including mine -was in their carseat carrier.

I held my baby while I had a pap and breast exam, just switched sides depending on what boob they were checking out. My doctor said they do it all the time.

My guess would be that the nurses would be more than happy to hold the baby during the exam. The ladies at my OBGYN love the babies! You could call tomorrow morning and double check.

I took babies with me. Nurses and office staff almost fought amongst themselves to see who could hold baby!

I used to bring baby with me to midwife follow ups and annuals. I will likely still bring my now 2.5 year old with me this summer. They LOVE seeing the kids they have helped deliver all grown up and the exam itself is so quick I don't anticipate it being an issue.
Good luck.

Wow Crystal, your options are pretty slim. I would definitely bring the family to the OB. Dad can sit in the waiting room with the three of them. Probably won't be more than an hour or so out there. I believe you need time with your doctor to talk about any concerns you may have and your doctor should have your full attention, even if it's only for a couple of minutes. I would never personally ask the staff to hold the baby, it's definitely not their job and who knows if any of them will even be available.
That's just my opinion, good luck!

when i had to go to the obgyn i put my daughter in a stroller and turned it around by the door at the time of the examination so she could not see anything. i tried holding her one time during an examination but that didnt go very well and the doctor was not happy. if you can get the baby in a stroller everything would be fine. good luck.

For my 6 week post partum check up I put the baby on my chest and just held her. The doctor was fine with it and at that age (or 4 months) they can't go far and it only takes a few moments so it isn't like your getting checked for a long time.

When my kids were small I would bring a stroller. Never fun...sometimes stressful. One time my new born cried the majority of my visit and my son who was being potty trained but was completely trained during the day but not at night decided to poop in his big boy underwear while the dr was examining me. Although I barely gave him anything to eat all morning to discourage any crazy things from happening. Plus I took him to the bathroom before we left and right when we arrived. Ugh.
Good luck.

I would choose one of these options:

1. Feed the baby just before leaving for your appointment, and leave baby with your husband, you'll be back by the time she needs to eat again.

2. Bring the baby in a sling and hold her while you're being examined, or ask a physician's assistant to come in the room with you to help.

Good luck!

I think your obgyn is probably used to having moms have to bring their babies. I think the nurse that has to be in there anyway as an extra could hold your baby, or could your baby just sit in his car seat right beside you? Those exams are so quick once the doctor finally comes in, so I don't think it should be a problem. Not necessarily fun... but not a problem either. =)

I bet you could lay him with you, but just incase could you bring along the baby seat and lay him in their while you are being examined? I have never brought my daughter in with me alone, I used to just bring dad along too, (she's 18 months now and I can leave her home with someone) but I only have the one child. I'm pretty sure the OB would love to see the baby, so I would just bring him with you!

I used to bring my baby with me for those appts. The Dr's office LOVED holding them and it was only for a few minutes.

I also believe it's completely natural and tons of Mom's do it. I took my daughter when she was 2 months old and she screamed during some of it and the Male OBGYN in place of my regular Dr. didn't even flinch :)

I would think that most OB/GYN offices are pretty kid/baby friendly. My physician's nurse held my son when I went in for my pap when he was only a few months old because he was a little fussy. I would just call the office first thing in the morning and ask them if there would be someone to hold your 4-month old during the exam.

As a single mom without much family around, I've taken my daughter a lot of places in the past three years that might be considered inappropriate. I also very rarely used a stroller.

I used a midwife...so might be considered a little more child friendly...but she just laid on my chest during my pelvic exam. It doesn't take much time. It does make the breast exam difficult if you can't lay her down anywhere.

I'd bring a nice, fluffy blanket or mat where you can lay her for a few minutes.

I didn't read all the responses so I may be repeating but...

My OB/GYN has been very understanding and he has teeny tiny offices. I do use a carrier but both of my sons were squirmy and crabby, so I would just take them out of the carrier and put them on my chest for some tummy time when I was on the table. No one batted an eye or thought it was weird.

The best part? The doctor and the nurses who got to see me through nine months of pregnancy then got a chance to see the baby (or got to see the baby as he grew bigger) and they seemed to enjoy catching up with the "end result".

Don't worry about it - just bring the baby in with you and if you can't hold him just say something like "Could I get a hand with holding the baby during the exam?" and unless they're not human, they'll say yes (and you know there's ALWAYS at least one person in every working environment who absolutely LOVES babies and will jump at the chance to cuddle/snuggle one up!).

HELLO!

OB/GYN!
It's all about having babies around there! I'm sure they can accommodate.

I personally used a baby carrier for things like that. I mean, you can't use a sling while you drive the car and my babies would fall asleep in the car anyway so the pop out carriers worked so great. Just my opinion, but it was way easier than getting them out of the car seat and then putting them in a sling and then taking them out of the sling and putting them back in the car seat.
I wouldn't rule infant carriers out as an option. I used them until my kids got too heavy for me to carry in one and even still, if my husband was along, he carried them.

Call the doctor office ahead of time and ask them what they recommend and I'm sure you won't have anything to worry about.

Best wishes!
