CA Girl in OK?

My husband just got his dream job offer in Oklahoma. For what we owe on our house here in California, we could have a mansion there and I wouldn't have to work (my dream). The only problem, I'm a CA girl. Our family is all here. My friends are here. The sun is here. Any advice on how to keep an open mind about this offer? Anyone else have experience (good or bad) with relocating far from everything you've ever known?

What can I do next?

Hi A.-

I have been married for 11 yrs and have moved 6 times to 5 states in those years w/ husbands job. If it's the job your husband wants and you can live MUCH cheaper and be with your child I'd go for it. Home is where you make it and with your family. Try going to OK for a visit and looking for homes and things to do in the area for your family. You can still see friends and family in CA and they can visit you in OK. If you think you'd be miserable then I wouldn't go but you should give it a chance.

I would say, spend the money and go visit the area that you would live. That way, you can know first hand what it would be like there (and what it looks like.) Many families are moving out of California because it is so expensive. If you are seriously considering it, I think the best time to do it is before your daughter starts school and before she makes really good friends. 10 years ago, I moved away from my family. We all take turns visiting every 3 months, and visiting each others' houses. We're only 10 hours away, but with email, the phone and visiting every 3 months, we stay in touch. You never know, your family might just follow you out there when they see how good you have it.

I would not move. My family is too important and helpful. I was also on bedrest with my last daughter and would not of been able to do it with out family. It would be a tough call if the move meant you were able to stay home with your daughter. Maybe a temp move and advance career and you could move back? Good luck with your decsion.

Lucky you!!! Both my DH and I are CA natives, but moved to Oregon for four years and moved back recently. You don't know how bad it is here until you find it better somewhere else. I thought I couldn't live without the sun, but found and to this day love, love, love the seasons. Snow, changing of the leaves, chic winter clothes and much more. I say seize the day and embrace the new adventure that lies ahead of you. You can always come back or try a new place. Best of luck!

Hi A.,

All I can tell you is that my husband & I are native Californians & we would LOVE to leave the state if we could. We would miss our friends & family, but we could always stay in touch & make new friends. The cost of living out here is ridiculous & the crime rate just keeps going up & the overcrowding, etc, etc. I think you have a great opportunity here. Good Luck!
