My child has recently been diagnosed with molluscum.I have taken him to the dermatologist but they won't treat them and told me to wait it out. It is getting worse and I need some advice from other mommy's that have children with this annoying virus.

What can I do next?

I dealt with this last year with my daughter, the doctor said it could be treated at dermatologist, but that doesn't guarantee that there are some that haven't appeared yet, and it is pretty painful. It was really ugly. Doctor told me to put alcohol on the sores when they get a head or open up and it dried them up real well, they also gave me a cortisone cream to put on after bath and they said it needed to be done right after she got out. She cleared up in about 8-10 months, she still starts to get some itchiness and blotches, but thats the eczema, which by the way they said can trigger the whole thing. It will end.
Good luck.

My 8 year old son has mulluscum. So far we have been dealing with it for about 9 months. It is my understanding that the virus can stay in your system for about 2 years.

Our pediatrician explained that the virus can be spread to others by contact with the bumps that have burst open and/or an object that the puss/mucous may have been accidentally rubbed on. I am trying my best to ensure that no one in the house gets the virus.

I had my son pick a color of towel and washcloth that he would like to use. The family knows that he uses only the gray towels and that they are not to use this color. I make sure that the towels are only used once and then washed after each use. I also make sure that the kids do not bathe together anymore, just in case something was to get into the water from friction of washing his body.

There are a couple of different methods to help this along. Our dermatologist explained that they can dig the core out. I felt that would be too painful. There was another option, that I don't recall. But I do recall I was not comfortable with that. I am using the last option that they told me. It is a cream called ALDARA. Basically it is a drying solution for the bumps. Your pediatrician or dermatoligist will have to write a prescription for it. It definitely helps my son when they start itching... We apply it and the bumps start to dry up and the itching is subsided.

Hope this information helps a little.

Believe it or not...there are two things that treat this...zantac (I swear, it's because of the fact tha it actually affects T cells) and duct tape...duct tape kept on each wart for a week at a time "suffocates" it's growth. My daughter has a tendency to get this virus. The zantac is precribed by the immunologist for her and the duct tape I tried, after reading about it, for one large wart on her foot. With the zantac they will develop a head and sort of burst as they get better.

If you go to www.wikipedia.org and look up molluscum it has some suggestions for at home treatments. I went there because I had no idea what it was.

So i ahve a different soloution. Both my sons had this my 4 year old has sensitive skin so aldera hurt him instead our dematoligist gave him Beatle Juice. Yes really its called beatle juice and after 3 treatments it was gone. My 2 year old didnot respond to beattle juice but the aldera worked. p.s. they say 1 year the body will get rid of it we waited 2 and nothing. These methods did work for my children. PLUS changing towels everyday, not bathing together Oh and my dermatoligt said NO neosproen use bacitracin instead. it will not spread that way. good luck.BTW the dermatolgist I used is on Bloomingdale and east of Kings and i highly reccomend this. He does not believe in the wait and see that peditricians do.

Whatever you do, do not look mollescum on the web. It will only freak you out and make you think it's worse than it actually is. The CDC website brought me to tears and made me think that my son would have this for 4 years and would never be allowed in a playgroup again.

My son is 13 months and had it a few months ago. It is basically a virus that present itself when the immune system is compromised (in my son's case, it was an ear infection). Despite most of my friends never hearing of it despite being in healthcare, it is extremely common among children. You do not have to quaranteen your child and bumps will go away in a few weeks.

The big thing is to not have them scratch or pick at them. The virus is contained in the bump and will spread when opened. They usually appear on the arms and legs and do not spread to the face. There are some ointments available, but I would not recommend them unless for older children. If the Dermatologist is not concerned, then there is no need for you to be. It is unsightly and may get worse before it gets better, but do wait it out and it will eventually resolve itself. Good Luck.

Hi M.,

I too, have been dealing with this. It's funny you bring this up today, I was just searching on-line about it all day yesterday. NOTHING is the answer I got. It's so gross looking but that's the only bad thing about it. My two older boys had it last year and it went away in SEVERAL months and now the 2 year old has it. It will last a long time and will get worse before it gets better (told that by my pedi) Now, my son's are all developing heads and I'm wondering if this is the "worse before the better". So, feel comfort in knowing that 100% of children will get it in their lives and other than it sometimes being a little itchy, it's totally painless and harmless.

HI. I feel your pain!! My sister's kids have it too. They have had it for over a year. Her youngest is the worst. There are "herbal" treatments but so far none have worked. My sister is just "waiting" it out. You can google some of the remedies. Most have a money back guarantee but she found that none of them worked. I am terrified that my kids will get it but so far so good. Good luck!!

wait it out. There are treatments but they usually do not work. Just watch out if they get infected from scratching. My daughters had molluscum, my older daughter first since about 12 months. She is just on one last spot and she is 4 1/2 yrs. Be patient.

I, My son has just gotten over it, He had about 20-30 bumps in total all over his under arm, fore arm, and down his torso on that same side......One or two would get pimplish, turn red, then rupture, I found that before they got to the rupture stage i put a bandaid on with neosporin, and waited until it did its thing........It took about a year and a half for them to all go away....He hasnt had one rupture in a while now......
Our dermatologist wouldnt treat either, they would have left little scars all over his little body, they are like warts, they will go away eventually, but is conttagoius, dont use the same towel to dry off with......or else your other children will get it.......
I also did some internet searching back when they were really bad, It said to use sacillyc acid.......the neutrogeana face soap has it in it....I used that everyday to wash the area with........I have read about duct tape, but who wants to put duct tape on your childs body, ouch, just think of the pain in the butt that would be to get off......

Any ways good luck, if you need anything else, just message me!

I feel your pain, my son had it when he was three. I took him to so many doctors to try and get rid of it. Of course they all told me to leave it alone. It drove me nuts and I hated how my sons skin looked, but, in the end it lasted about 7 months then went away, you can't even tell he had it.
I did try to poke a hole and drain them (this was a bad idea) it was painfull to him and it never helped. One doctor told me if they try to freeze them off it could make more. Sorry you are going through this, just love him like crazy and before you know it, everything will go away.
