Childhood Rash

Several days ago, my 4 year old had a 102 fever for one night. We brought it down quickly and he had no other symptoms. Yesterday, he developed a rash on his face, neck, chest, upper back and on his bottom, and today it has gotten worse. The bumps are very tiny, you can only tell when inspecting him closely in the light.

The rash is flesh colored mostly, a little pink in some spots or brownish on some of the bumps, but not itchy, pussy or puffy. I looked up childhood rashes and the only ones that really describe it is for Rubella and Roseola, though not all of the symptoms add up.

Our health insurance hasn't kicked in yet, and he is vaccinated, so I don't think it could be those I mentioned above. We also have not changed anything like laundry detergent or soap and he doesn't have allergies. Does anyone have experience with rashes like this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone! I feel much better knowing that it is viral and will go away soon.

Its a viral rash.
AFTER a fever.... a baby/child can get a 'rash' like you described... both my kids have had that too. More than once. After a fever.
It is actually, the virus leaving the body.
This is per our Pediatrician... who examined my kids with it.
If you read about it online, it will not seem so nerve wracking.

It is not painful nor itchy... for the child. It is temporary.
No need to do anything to it.
It will go away.

all the best,
Susan

OMG i was just about to pose the same question! my LO had a low fever a few days ago and today has the same rash you have just discribed. I called our pedi and they said it could be a viral (sp) rash. which if it is viral there is nothing for them to do but just ride it out. I have to wait for my hubby to get home to take her to the docs. I am curious as to what the other moms say. gl

As long as it doesn't get any worse and the fever doesn't come back I think you are in the clear. I would say a viral rash also. Just watch it, worst case senerio call his dr office and speak to a nurse. I know you said that you don't have insurance right now but you don't need that to call during business hours and ask a question or two. Good Luck and I hope the rash goes away soon.

My son had just the same thing that you described...low fever one day then a rash. Went to the dr and it was a viral rash. Nothing you can do--just wait for it to go away. It took my son about 4 days for it to fully go away. He had a couple of really bad spots on his cheeks....looked terrible. I was about to take him back to the dr after the 3rd day, then on the 4th morning it was gone. As long as he doesn't feel bad or get worse....I wouldn't take him in. Good luck and I hope fe feels better soon!! :)

It could also be Fifth Disease, which is viral and has to run it's course. It's harmless but annoying to the one that has it. Often the face looks someone slapped you because of the red cheeks. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/f... this explains it a bit and check online under Fifth Disease/Images and see examples of what it looks like.

Sounds like a viral rash to me, also. I've had this happen to me. A fever one day, fever goes down, and a rash the next. I went to the doctor who said, "yep, it's a virus. Go home, drink plenty of liquids and rest until the rash is gone." I think it lasted a couple of days but I'm not sure.

I'd just be sure to keep him hydrated and quiet. No need to go to the doctor unless he has more symptoms and feels worse.
