Mystery Rash Appeared on My Daughter Tonight

Tonight my daughter developed a rash and I was wondering if it sounds familiar to anyone. Her cheeks looked a bit flush, but she didn't feel warm, and she had a bit of the pink rash near one of her elbows, and on her legs and abdomen. It was tiny red, raised bumps. Since she didn't feel warm and seemed to feel fine, I put her to bed like normal, but I hope that was the right choice. If she still has it in the morning, I'll call the doctor, I just wonder what it could be. I have been doing some painting in the house- could it be from latex paint exposure? Our house is also really dry, so I guess it could be dry skin, but it sure isn't what my skin looks like when it's dry. I just really hope it's nothing serious...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The rash went away. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or if this is what helped, but we started using a humidifier in her room and I put a lot of lotion on her. Even now her skin seems dry, so I'm continuing to use lotion and I know I should make her bath water cooler. Thank you so much to everyone who responded, y'all are great!

Don't have an answer to the rash....hope everything is better. I too look for others to hang out with, very new to the area and don't know anyone or have any family around. I am married with 2 children, a boy age 3 and baby girl 10 months. Where do you live? I live in O'Fallon near the TR Hughes ball park.

It could possibly be Fifth Disease. This is a rash that will start on the cheeks generally, and then spread to the torso and then the arms and legs. It doesn't itch or cause any problems for the child, but it can look like a really bad case of the chicken pox (without the little blisters on the bumps). My son had this back in November, and unfortunately, it is contagious BEFORE they break out into the rash. My doctor said that about 90% of adults have already had this in some form, and some just get it worse than others. I would take her to the doctor for an official diagnosis, but other than that - there is nothing they can do about it.
Best of luck,
J.

That sounds a lot like my daughter's food allergy... I took her to the dr. and they tried everythinig from bacterial infection to scabies - none of it worked. Finally a nurse said, maybe it's something she's been eating. She prescribed something, but I can't remember what the name of it is (and I'm on the rd. and very sillily forgot it at home), but it cleared it right up. It was like a prescription strength hydrocortizone...

Also, I started watching what I was feeding her. Sure enough, she was allergic to the raspberry jam I'd been putting on her toast (I'd already nixed the PB, thinking it was that. She's not allergic at all to peanuts. It was the jelly).

I'd start watching what she eats... And, it could be exposure to the paint. You can smell the paint, so that means there are particles of it that are airborn. She's breathing those. She may be having an allergic reaction.

If you can afford it, try an allergy test. I wasn't able to afford it, but I sure wish I could!

Sounds like eczema. Cool baths and lots of cream like Aquaphor or Eucerin along with loose beathable fabrics should help. If it won't go away, you may need a corticosteroid cream to treat it, and then full up with the rest as a preventative measure. If it's there for more than a few days you sould get it checked though, just to make sure that's what you are dealing with.

Have you changed soaps/shampoo/lotions or anything of the sort? It sort of sounds like eczema to me. Try using 1% hydrocortizone cream on it. Should clear it up pretty quickly.
My son has eczema and will periodically develop a "rash" when we use different soap or shampoo. She may be sensitive to something or it could very well just be dry skin. My son also gets red spots that seriously look horrible and that don't go away so quickly...but using lots of lotion 24/7 keeps it tamed.
I hope you find something that works.

It sounds kinda like hives to me. Did you feed her anything new? Or did you change detergents or something here recently? My daughter has broken out in hives before. We never did find the cause of it. She just broke out in them one night. We figured it was the Chinese food we had for lunch. Anyhow, we gave her Benedryl and it was cleared up by the next morning.

Hello. My name is A. and I have a 6yr. old and a 3yr. old. Both boys!!!!! My nephew had something similar. He never ran a fever or anything, but he had a red rash. The doctor said it was Roseola and it would go away on its own. I don't know if that is what she has, but it sounds similar. Anyways, I don't know if you live around Tebbetts, but I just moved here and know NO ONE. I would love to meet other moms to hang out with.

Has she had any cold-like symptoms prior to this rash (runny nose, mild or low fever, cough...)? I ask b/c two kids in my daughter's school have been diagnosed with Fifth Disease. It's actually not that bad, just a viral infection, though it can be dangerous for unborn babies (fetuses in the first and second trimester at at the most risk, and it can cause severe anemia and be fatal. A pregnant woman should immediately contact her doctor if she has been exposed to fifth disease). You should take her to the Dr. and tell him/her about any symptoms just in case that's what this is. Note: By the time the rash appears, the illness is no longer contaigeous. The incubation period for Fifth Disease is anywhere from a week to a MONTH!! The rash in an immune response to the illness, and can last a few weeks. It can be aggravated by heat, stress, and perspiration. Good luck; I hope it's nothing!

My daughter had a similar rash a few weeks ago, red raised bumps all over her body (almost looked like chicken pox or bug bites). She had no other symptoms though, no itching or fever. I did take her to the pediatrician b/c it went away and came back several times throughout a 3-4 day period and I was getting concerned about it. The doc said it might be the onset of a virus which she was yet to develop (thank goodness!) or a mild allergic reaction to something. It went away for good after a few days and hasn't come back since.

If it's not bothering your daughter and she's got no other symptoms I'd just wait on it a day or two to see what happens. If it doesn't get better then take her to the doctor to see what's up. Good luck!

My daughter gets really bad dry skin. They kinda feel like sand paper, but not so rough. Sometimes if I don't put lotion on it, it gets real itchy and irritated. I use lotions like Aveeno and Lubriderm. Every once in awhile when she gets extremely itchy I use some cortisone cream.

Also, just today my daughter starting getting hives. Does your daughters rash look like tiny little mosquito bits or more bumpy? If it looks like the mosquito bites, then she could have hives.I am not sure what the hives are from, but she gets them everyone and awhile.

I hope this helps.

My son had similar symptoms awhile back. His school said it was called Fifth's disease. You can look it up on the internet to find out more about it. He said it wasn't itchy, and his cheeks looked like someone had slapped him. They said that "slap cheek disease" was another name for it. I was also told that they run a really low grade fever before the rash breaks out and during that time they are contagious, but after the rash breaks out it is no longer contagious. They said that the fever is so low grade that most of the time it isn't caught so that is why it goes around so fast. It was very lacy like and it was on his cheeks, stomach, back, and his thighs. They gave me a sheet on it, so I didn't google it. You might be able to find some pictures of it, but I bet that is what it is. They say some children will get it really bad while others, you won't be able to tell they even have it because it won't get that red, it will just be bumpy. Hope this helps you!! Keep us posted.

Both my girls (7 months & 3 years) developed something, around the same time, similar to what you describe. The doctor said it was a slight bacterial infection and told us to use lotrimin. It was better within the day and gone by the end of the week.

My 3 year old spent a week in the hospital when she was just over a year old. They said that was Roseola. She never had a rash. She did have a fever and was severely dehydrated.

It sounds sort of like ezcema (sp?) you might try some NON water based lotion. We use some stuff I think it is called ezcema baby from traget. It is in the baby section in a blue green bottle with winnie the pooh on it. I works great. It is really greesy though. We put it on right before bed when she have her sleeper on. It doesn'y get on everything that way.

Hi A.,
We discovered that our 2 year old daughter had eczema when she was about 6 months. When she was six months, she had red, raised bumps on her legs and elbows. Her ped gave her a topical ointment called triamcinolone acetonide cream USP. 0.1%. I don't let her soak in the tub as long which seems to help.

The same thing happened to my son two weeks ago. He was on antibiotics at the time, so I thought he was having an allergic reaction.. but the doc said that he didn't think so, since it took four days before anything appeared. The rash just went away on its own after two days. It didn't seem to bother my little guy at all, but it covered his whole back, stomach and shoulders. I put some benadryl on him, but I think it just made me feel better. My doc said that babies have funny skin, and sometimes they get these bizzaro rashes.

It might be a viral infection. My son had something like that before so I took him to the doctor and they said it was just a viral infection.

If your house is really dry, check to see how warm it is. The two mixed together can irritate eczema. My daughter has eczema and it gets inflamed (never in the same spot...well sometimes) by being dry and warm. Try some over the counter hydrocortisone cream 1%. And vaseline is awesome. Cool baths and vaseline her right after. If that doesnt work, or if you are uncomfortable with not contacting the doctor first then definitely let the doctor look at it. But if the doctor says it is eczema, vaseline and the cool baths is wonderful.

I wouldn't worry about it. My son had a rash like that once and I took him to emergency only so they could tell me it could be due to a current or on-coming cold or teething. I would just watch it. If it lasts more than 3 days, take her to the doc to be sure. Hope that helps!
