Hi L.
I've used White vinegar and water. It works really well. I have white carpet and it didn't make any stains. I also used it on my mattress before I discovered the bed protector. Vinegar is amazing. I use it to clean my house. No my house does not smell like vinegar.

the enzyme-based cleaners that are designed to clean/deodorize after pet or toddler accidents are great - pet stores carry one called "Nature's Miracle" and I've also had good luck with one called "Kids'n'Pets" which is less expensive and often sold at Target.
And (warning TMI ahead) if you need to clean #2 off of underwear, put on gloves and soak/swish the underwear around in the toilet a bit to get as much of it off as you can, then move the underwear to a small plastic container with bleachy water. If I needed to soak the soiled underwear, I'd actually let it sit in the toilet with the lid closed and the empty plastic container sitting on the lid of the seat so that the rest of our household would know not to use that toilet until the 'decontaminating' process was finished :-p

if the weather's nice, you might want to try the 'bare bum/big t-shirt in the backyard' method - when one of my twins was in the learning stages, she found it much easier to know when she had to go if she had a bare bum, plus she could just sit right down on her potty and go without having to worry about getting the clothes out of the way. And of course, accident clean up is a bit easier outdoors

Urine and feces accidents can be easily cleaned up with a solution of white vinegar and water. The vinegar effectively takes out the stain and odor, and is safe in regard to the color of the carpet and to the environment for the child. You will have a little vinegar smell linger for a while, but if that bothers you, just use a safe room or carpet deodorizer to cover that up.

I would be armed with a lot of Resolve carpet cleaner and Febreze.

Your best defense is a good offense - watch him like a hawk and take him to the potty constantly, whether he needs it or not! =) But, if he does have a potty accident, if you have carpet, just rent a carpet cleaning machine (some stores have a 2-day rate, just plan on needing it the whole weekend!). If you have any other kind of solid surface floors, I'm a fan of bleach and Pine Sol, personally. Gets rid of the smell and disinfects. Good luck!

I would definitely avoid the harsh toxic cleaners that are a hazardous to your children. Nature has given us many good alternatives, which is why I decided to go the Melaleuca way. This company has been green for almost 24 years now. Exceptional products that are safe for our family. That is why I've used them for over 4 years now.

Vinegar has good solvency properties, but it's not a good disinfectant.

Whichever way - please check your labels.

Corn starch on the carpet. Leave it for a while and then just vaccuum up.

Oxy Clean also works well on carpet, upholstery, etc.

I am completely sold on Costco wipes. Seriously, it's not like they pee a ton when they do have accidents - I just grab one or two of the wipes & wipe away. I have a single-color carpet which attracts stains terribly & I so wish I had figured this one out a lot sooner than I did! They really do a decent job cleaning up light messes!
