Congested Baby = No Formula/formula Substitution?

When your 1 yr old is sick with cough, congestion, runny nose how do you stay away from dairy or dairy-based formula if that is a good portion of their diet? Any home remedies?

She does eat solids but has been wanting bottles ALOT more since becoming sick. We do rice water but she's not a fan.

What can I do next?

There is no reason to change the baby's diet and give her something like rice water that probably has little to no nutritional value to a growing/developing 1 year old.

She probably wants bottles because it's comforting and she needs the nutrition to get well. And liquids help thin secretions. You can also offer cool water with a splash of juice in sippy cups to her in between her bottles and solids.

M... I would never change the baby's diet just for the simple fact that they are sick. I would give a little bit of water down gingerale here and there to help prevent the upset stomach for all the mucus. I would do saline drops everytime I changed their diaper. Put a cool-mist humidifier in their room, prop up their mattress and put vick's vapor rub on their feet. They should sleep like a rock :) Hope you get a good nites sleep soon..

P.S. I did all the kids w/ vick's vapor rub on their feet, I actually got the idea about 5 years ago from another mom on this site. Just coat the bottom of their feet, but on socks or sleeper and that's it.. It works awesome.. good luck :)

heres what i do. give them whatever they will eat. i never adjusted my daughters diet when sick i just gave her what she wanted which is lots of fluids and i still offered solids. i suctioned my daughters nose 3-4 times a day. also lemon will help clear mucus. you can mix a little in with her water. also get her a cool mist humidafier for at night.

Yeah...that's a myth. Keep giving the formula. It will be fine.
Better to prop up the top of the crib on blocks for easier breathing & run a cool mist humidifier at night in her room.

Did your pediatrician tell you no dairy? From what I understand, dairy is only a no-no with high fever and sometimes some say to still give it to them. Have you tried soy products? Soy tends to be much more gentle anyway if she has an upset stomach as well. Similac Sensitive for fussiness and gas is all soy, I think. I dont know about infamil. If your child on solids, yet? Maybe try an applesauce or something with vitamin C. I started my kiddo on 1 baby foods when he was around six to eight months old. By the time he was a year old with teeth, he was already on Gerber Little Meals. Good luck! Also, for cough and congestion, home remedy... Rub a generous amount of Vicks on the bottom of baby's feet as well as chest and back. Put some socks on with pants and try not to let her pull the socks off. Bottom of the feet is the best place and it helps tremendously with the coughing. There is also a vapor bath made by Johnson and Johnson which helps sooth them before bedtime.

There is nothing worse than feeling helpless when your little person feels ill. Lots of TLC, Momma! Good luck!

M.! When my son got sick like that we would take away the formula and give him rice water. He loved it. Would drink it for a couple of days and when he started to feel better we would give him formula again. This was my husband's idea. Guess it's something they do in Mexico.
Cook rice until very very very cooked. Seperate the water and rice. Add a bit of sugar and a bit of cinnamon with the water. Give to baby when cooled down.

Orange juice, (though I doubt a 1 year old is drinking this or a lot of it), causes congestion.

I personally, did not limit intake of dairy, when my kids were sick. It did not make a difference for them.

Did your ped say to stop Formula or dairy based things?
If not then don't worry about it.

BE careful, that she does not get dehydrated. Formula, is a "meal" and a drink, being that it has nutrients in it.

Did you take her to the Doctor????
Is her Congestion in her nose or from her chest?
Or both?

you can also try saline nose drops, for kids. For the nasal congestion.
The brand "Little Noses" (from drugstores), is made for kids.

How long has she been sick?
Take her to the Doctor....
and watch for fever or worsening symptoms.

A 'cold' usually lasts 5-10 days.

I just read a study that showed that dairy really DOESN'T make you more congested when you're sick! Keep giving her the formula unless the pediatrician says not to.

When I had child care we had heard the lactic acid in milk could make the mucus thicker and harder to get up but with the new medications and other things now they don't restrict milk and other dairy products like they used to.

Here's an article that tells that the fats in milk do increase the mucus and can cause more issues. But if the child is too young I still think the milk is a necessary part of their diet. Please talk to your doctor about the choice of stopping the dairy. If she needs the milk then you need to give it to her. Just give her some other meds too. Like an expectorant but they have to be given by the doc. The over the counter meds are not made for little guys and can really hurt them.

She wants the bottles because she's hungry and thirsty. Unless the doctor has specifically said no formula, I would give it to her.

As adults, we sometimes avoid dairy because it sometimes increases mucas production. It doesn't harm us in any way.
