Has anyone ever found anything that worked to soothe a newborn with colic? A friend of mine is going out of her mind because her baby is crying so much. He's not ill, he's just crying.
We'd be grateful for any tips from veteran moms. Thank you!

If she is breastfeeding, in addition to the gas-producing foods already mentioned, she should try eliminating other food groups to see if something isn't being tolerated. For me, it was dairy. Not only did my son feel better, but I felt better and haven't gone back to dairy since. When I weaned him onto couw's milk, he started getting ear infections, so he doesn't do dairy either. (He is 11 now.)
A friend of mine insists that I should try all-organic milk to see if it's the additives, not the dairy, that bothers us; I havent' tried that yet. Good luck.

GRIPE WATER!!!!!!!!!! It's made by Baby's Bliss! I didn't look to see where you are from but here in Pensacola you can buy it at Storkland. That's the only place I've ever been able to find it. It's all natural stuff and you can give it to newborns.I used it with my daughter which is now 2 1/2 and I'm having another baby in 5 weeks and plan on stopping by there to get some more just in case! We would give it to my daughter and within 10 minutes she was the happiest little girl in the world! Good luck! Hope this helps!

OK here's the deal and it sounds crazy but it works. When my son was a baby 8weeks he went through the same thing this is what my mother did for me when I was a baby.....Get the herb, Fennel and put it in some hot water and make "a tea" Strain it out and put some DARK KARO syrup to sweeten it a little. then feed it to the baby. About 2-4oz He/She will burp, toot, and possibly poop then he will sleep for a long time cause his body is warn out from crying so much. Don't worry it will not harm the baby. My mother had this suggested to her when I was a baby, by an old Native AMerican lady. She did it and I reacted as stated above. My mom laughs now about it cause she thought she put me in a coma because I slept so much. But I was fine. If she does not want to try this she can just try putting the Dark KAro syrup in his bottle this helps too, just not as quickly, Good LUCK

Bicycle kicks help sometimes and the football hold can give relief sometimes too. A vibrating bouncy seat might be worth a shot.

My twin boys were colicky the 1st 3 months (screamed from 3-7pm EVERY DAY). Finally, we discovered Gripe Water (now you can get it at Publix & Walgreens too). Fennel & Chamomile help soothe gassiness & belly cramps (often an underlying cause of colic). We also got Swaddle-me wrap blankets. Many times, being swaddled calmed them down. The biggest thing to remember is what my mother always says to me: "this too shall pass". If she gets stressed, put the baby down (in his crib or swing) and walk away for a few minutes.

My son had colic and acid reflux. He LOVED running water. We would put him in the bouncy seat and put him in the bathroom while we took showers and I put him in the kitchen in his swing while the dishwasher was running. He also liked being held so I put him in a sling/carrier and that helped a lot(I also have a 1 1/2 year old so I needed my hands free). The swing also worked sometimes. Between the water sounds and the motion, he would settle down for a little while.

gripe water is wonderful and an old and trusted remedy from England, 3 generations of our family used it, if you don't have a British shop close by you can buy it online, Nurse Harveys brand is one of the best.

Unfortunately, I know exactly what she is going through. My eldest was colic for the first 3 mths and cried most afternoons and evenings nonstop. For her walking with her to a christian CD helped. My youngest had bad gas, colic, thursh and acid reflux. She was 100 times worse then my eldest. She cried 24.7. My husband would go over to friends after work because he couldn't handle the crying. The only thing that worked for her was walking with her in a front carrier. It was the only way to get her to sleep and calm down. The pressure of her against my belly helped with the gas and comforted her. If your friend is breastfeeding you need to let her know that she needs to eat plain food. No green leafing foods, no spicy foods, no tomatoes, no gassy foods nothing that can hurt their stomack. This significantly helps the colic. If she formula feeds I heard about a formula that helps with colic or acid reflux. The pediatrician recommended it for my youngest but I refused since I was breastfeeding. NOw I am expecting my third and I am scared too death to go through that again. Tell her to remember it normally only last 3 mths. 3 mths is such a short time in the spane of your child's life. Good luck and I feel for her.

Hi Norinne,

First of all, is Mom breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If breastfeeding, then Mom needs to change her diet. If bottle feeding, she may need to change formulas. Adding a probiotic and/or prebiotic will help. Colic usually develops because the baby's stomach has not developed enough to produce the ACID it needs to digest his food. Breast milk, if the diet is appropriate, does not need the same amount of stomach acid and should not upset the baby's tummy unless Mom is eating "normally." Pesticides, preservatives and hormones in our food supply is the main reason there is so much stomach problems and colic with our little ones these days. All of these things pass through the breast milk and are definitely in processed formulas.

Do NOT, Do NOT, Do NOT give the baby Karo Syrup. It has the same dangers as honey and can cause botulism. It should not be used until the baby is at least one year old, preferably two.

Hope I helped N.. Send my best to the new Mom!!!

Without having to "give" the baby any kind of tonic or medicine, I have heard of turning on the vacuum cleaner or running water or they have a cd with white noise on it and when played, soothes colicky babies. Good luck!
